The stationary outer rim and the movable inner rim which opens and closes, see pictures showing the open and closed positions. The outer rim has the following lettering cast into the surface" Made of Ferro Steel, Design Patented" and the inner rim is cast with ornate vines and leaf pattern. The inner ring has a finger latch to rotate the inner ring to the open or closed position. It is free of any damage, has some light rust and paint missing, ready for easy restoration. Ornate, vintage cast iron louvered floor heat grate, vent or register, manufacturer unknown, although it is probably Tuttle& Bailey because it has similar markings to my other pieces. This architectural salvage grate features a Victorian art nouveau design in graceful, flowing curves, lines and curlicues. There are no signs of cracks or breaks. The switch wheel to open and close the louvers is missing and the adjustable louvers move easily. But without a way to set them in a specific position. Each louver is marked with a one. Two or three dot pattern on the right side to signify what order they should be in place. The outside frame measures 12 x 14 inches and would fit within an opening of ... more10 x 12 inches. The grate is about 12” across by 13 7/8” There is approx a 1" lip around edge. 2" total depth. 2 3/4" depth of louvered pan. Unit has some surface rust but functions correctly. You are viewing a VINTAGE. GORGEOUS MONARCH CAST IRON COATED WITH WHITE ENAMEL HEATING GRATE WITH TOWEL WARMING BARS( As can be seen in the pictures, this item has a few chips and some rust. But that patina of age give this item more character than Humphrey Bogart and make this one of a kind item very cool and a must have for your home. It measures 21½ by 15½ inches. The bars would stick out 5 inches from the wall. Much bigger than a normal heating grate. Whether or not it is a towel warmer is pure speculation on my part. I have not been able to find anything like it anywhere after scouring the internet for hours. However, since Monarch did sell cast iron tubs, this would be a great accessory to go along with a tub. For your consideration are these really high style return air grates. They measure 32 x 24 x 1 1/2" They feature a cast iron frame with fancy cast brass inserts. These were likely wall mount rather than floor but certainly could be used either way. It would seem to me that they came out of a commercial or public building of some sort. They are heavy. At about 90 lbs. each, they are of a size, style and scale that I have not seen. There are 2 grates available. Antique Vintage Round Cast Iron Heat Register Air Grate Grill Floor or Ceiling Listed is a antique cast iron round register grate. The outside diameter is 8 3/8" and 2" deep. The grate will fit into a 7" opening. On the back of the outer rim. It is stamped 7. In the center there is a lever. This opens and closes the cast iron louvers. The louvers open and close very freely. There is some surface rust attached. Needs to be cleaned. I removed the grate from a Victorian house in Central New York. No cracks.
