Antique Chinese or Japanese Hand Painted Porcelain Ceramic Tile Painting
Tile is approx. 4 5/8(four and 5 eights) x 4 5/8 x 3/8 inch thick. And weighs 11 oz. As you can see in the pictures. The edges are slightly slanted In the picture showing the back of the tile you see brown spots. At first glance one may think that these are adhesive residue and that the tile was glued onto something at one time. At close examination. These spots appear to have been made at the time the tile was made. These spots appear to be fine sand particles which are now permanently fused to the tile. The tile glazing appears to stop at the outline of each of these spots. In the pictures you see that the upper corners are broken off. There is a very shallow chip along the upper edge. In the shape of a 1/8 inch radius semicircle located about 1 1/2 inch from the left corner. On the bottom edge there is a tiny chip 3/4 inch from the right ... morecorner, I felt when running my nail along the tile edge. It is about 1/16 of an inch, and so shallow that I felt it because the glazing is missing on that spot. Along the left edge, in a few tiny areas the glazing is dull. At the bottom left corner there is a spot of about 1/16 radius where the glazing is dull. The metal stand seen in the pictures is not included to avoid possible damage to the tile in transit. The focal point is a nude nymph surrounded by grape clusters, leaves and vines. The grape vines provide for a semi sheathed dress. This gorgeous tile came from an old hotel in Salisbury, Missouri, which is north of St. Louis. The hotel was constructed in the 1880s and was one of the first businesses in the town. The ceiling tin is in very good condtion. It has been mounted on wood as a wall plaque. It has been protected from the elements and has very little rust. The old paint and antique varnish are still very nice and mostly intact. The color is a dark oatmeal or brownish tan. The relief on the tin is very deep and there is a lot of texture. Antique Wooden Hand Painted Chinese Wall Tile 2236 NO TWO are EVER exactly alike! Designers will take these to display alone in any manner of decors.or frame. or shadow box or mix and max for a desired effect. Several years ago one of our dealers found an old restaurant in China that was closing down and selling everything in the old building. Included in the sale were well over 100 of these old hand painted wall tiles. He bought them ALL. We've been selling them off and on for the past few years. Every time we go on a buying run to this particular dealer I sort through them and pick out the nicest ones still available. On our last buying run I picked out the last ones in the best condition that he had left. I take them and carefully clean the borders of each as they're very dusty when we get them. The borders are yellowed with age ... morein areas. They still have the old nail holes in them from where they were hung. I don't touch the hand painted areas. If you wanted you could carefully clean them with a soft q-tip but most people prefer the aged patina. One can only IMAGINE the time it took to paint each one of these. The tile you see below is the EXACT tile you will receive. It measures 18" x 18" Very ornate with a bird dragon flying through the air fighting with another dragon. Montereau Creil French Tile"Pomme pourrie Gaste la compagnie" Apparently the apples are rotten? It is handpainted with an overglaze. Size is 8"x8"x 3/8" thick. There is a chip on the upper left corner. Pictured, and what appears to be a hairline or scratch that is just on the surface, some very minor crazing. Not sure of the age. However it does appear to be very old looking at the edges and the back& the painting may have some discoloration. We are in the process of downsizing our collections of various collectables. Chelsea Keramic tiles can now be found in museums as examples of New England Pottery History and the work of founder Hugh Robinson. Chelsea Keramic Tiles were made at the Chelsea Keramic Art Works factory. The factory was incorporated in 1872. Hugh Robinson the company founder is the first recognized potter to have worked with nonrepresentational ceramic decoration glazes. I have no idea of the age of this tile but it sure looks like an antique tile to me. It came from an estate of items collected in England including an antique tile trivet which I also acquired. This is the curious thing: the tile was broken as is evident from the reverse side but was so skillfully restored that it is not at all evident on the front and the repair doesn't show under blacklight! The only thing that shows up under blacklight is a snippet of the yellow of Sancho Panza's belt The only clue to the origin is an impressed set of letters on the reverse which is hard to read but could ... morebe SPAIN. Antique Faience raised line polychrome tile is magnificent art pottery
Magnificent 4 1/4" square tile. This was owned by the Dominican Sisters of Hope Monastary. Within grounds of Mount St Marys College, and I purchased it a few years ago at the Auction because they were leaving the grounds after being there since before the college. I got a few things, that went fast. I kept this fabulous tile with pland to frame and hang it(thought too wonderful for trivot) I am now selling without reserve. I still have the incredible standing chimes I bought, or would keep this piece to remember that great day. One small flaw shown in photo# 2, that I believe is in manufacture rather than handling; it is not visible from the top, and barely from angle. May be much older than I have estimated. Looks even better in person than photographs show.

I just Love it. I Think Its interesting how the years aged this tin. This is a great piece for painting and Setting on your Mantel Piece or Hanging on Your Walls.
