Note that the back leg of the andirons is offset allowing these to work with a lot of different fireplaces depending on how they are set up. Condition is very good. They are painted black with expected wear to the paint for their age. They are a bit dirty and there is some surface rust. They are in untouched as-found condition. Brass Andirons, The Harvin Co., Virginia Metalcrafters, Claw Foot
Solid Brass Andirons. Nice set of 18th century American design andirons with claw foot made by Virginia Metalcrafters. The Harvin Co. made all the brass andirons and candlesticks and such for Colonial Williamsburg and other historic sites until merging with Virginia Metalcrafters who continued to make the andirons in the exact way they were previously produced. Measures 17" tall with a short shank of 6" deep. Very heavy.about 13lbs each! These were recently acquired at a Vermont estate sale. They are fairly clean. Andirons Cast Brass Iron Fire Dogs signed N Johnson Boston 1800s Antique Rare
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 HTF Antique Andirons N. Johnson Boston circa 1820. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Beautiful Unique Cast Brass and Iron Andirons stamped N. Johnson Boston. The 1823 Boston Directory lists Nathaniel Johnson as a coppersmith at 11 Marshal Street which was near the Hay Market. Not far from Nathaniel Hall. The andirons have no screws or bolts. Crafted completely by a black smith with a style indicative of the Charlestown, Massachusetts forges circa 1820's. We do not have any individual provenience on these Andirons. But there is a listing of similar andirons at the Old Sturbridge Village Museum in Massachusetts where they attribute the andirons to"Nathaniel Johnson, Boston, Massachusetts. Nathaniel Johnson is listed as a coppersmith in Boston Directories from 1816-1823. This is 1 of 2 pairs of ... morelabeled Johnson andirons known at time of acquisition. Nathaniel is listed as a jeweler in the 1825 directory which indicates he moved in a different direction in his career and why there are not very many andirons with his name on it. The other pair is listed in the inventory of the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. If you look closely at the last picture you can see the fine cast line in the brass. The andirons were braised together by a talented craftsman. The Andirons weigh approximately 6 ½# a piece. It wasn’t until after the 1830’s that forges had the technology to cast hollow brass. Condition: Brass is in good shape with numerous fleabite nicks as would be expected in an antique that has been used for over a hundred of years. The brass is polished but there are some spots that could use additional polishing. Please look at the photos closely. Note that one of the dog legs or log holders has been repaired by a blacksmith some time in the past. The dog legs have light rust and pitting but are still strong and usable. Local estate find! Antique brass? bronze? figural fireplace andirons. These were purchased at a Grand Rapids Estate sale from a family that traveled extensively. They feature lion heads with claw feet and acanthus leaves. The twisted spiral accents add extra detail. They are 24"tall. 11" wide and 19" from front to back. They will ship unassembled. The patina is dark especially on the back side from smoke. I have not attempted to clean them, preferring to leave the patina in the original state. They weigh over 18lbs. Thanks for looking. This is a pair of antique Bradley& Hubbard Arts and Crafts hammered cast iron andirons. The are each marked and numbered 7012.1/2. They are 15 1/2" high and 9 1/8" wide with the back part being about 21" long. They are painted a darkened gold or bronze/gold. Never having seen these before I don't know if the paint is original and not but there is some paint on the sides and back. It looks very old and great. Condition is very good with some wear to the paint and minor surface rust on the grate holders. Some of the pictures are darkened from the camera and the first ones are a little lighter to show the surface. Hard to get the exact color. These large andirons feature an ornate French design with highly dimensional detailing. The bases feature exaggerated. Tall, splayed tripod legs with lion claws& knuckles, ornate scrolling in the knees, and sculpted leaves on top. The ornate tall center shafts are encircled with ornate, dimensional"ribbon and flowers(w/roses) garlands spiraling from top to bottom. This Sale is for a Matching pair of Antique Cast Iron Andirons. Very rare- Made by the- STOVER Mfg. Co. Located in Freeport IL. From researching the company. These andirons would date 1880-1895. Both are completed with original back log bars, which are made to fit only these andiron fronts due to the interlocking notch& bolt setup. Bolt/nut holding on back bar are not original bolt/nut, and are rusted and should be replaced to hold together firmly(nuts rusted in spot were it leaves back bar lose and can slid off by wiggling) Andirons measure 17 3/4" tall, 8" apart at feet, 17" deep. These unusual antique wrought iron Andrions are one-of-a-kind and are massive. They measure an impressive 27" tall. With the tea kettle included. They will fit an hearth that is 40" wide. The fireplace opening must be at least 16"deep. As with most early century andirons. There are no markings. They are hand forged and believed to be from the early 1800's. They have not been restored and are in beautiful as-found condition from a New York Estate. The kettle is cast iron with its original E.S. They are a genuine antique pair very old and not perfect. They both have some surface rust. One has a small chip on the ear and a small hole just above the right foot, the other has a small hole on the right ear and the stand has been replaced and welded to the owl body this repair is solid and strong. ANTIQUE BULLDOG ANDIRONS
These are cast iron Bulldog Andirons manufactured by Carbo Foundry in Alexandria. Louisiana. These bulldog andirons are hard to find and I think were made exclusively by this particular foundry in Alexandria. I am saying this because my father worked at this foundry as a teenager in the 1940's and briefly after his military service during the Korean War and he remembers helping to make these bulldog style andirons. I have also searched for these on the internet and have not had any luck finding more available. They have a great look and would be perfect for someone who was in the marines or had a bulldog as a college mascot. I offering these as local pickup only unless we can arrange some sort of shipping agreement as they are very heavy. The height is13" high and length is 20" long.
