For warfare was an important ritual activity, which not only achieved practical goals of conquest and defending land. This warrior is poised ready for action, or perhaps only to serve as a sentry guarding palace entrances or staircases. This piece is beautifully modelled with painted armour, helmet, club and neck protector. He is wearing a white, sleeveless tunic, which is decorated with a dark red swirling pattern that also adorns his cone-shaped helmet, and a short loincloth with dark red dots, decorated belt and wrist-guards. Pre Columbian Maya Ulua Cylinder
A Maya footed short/wide cylinder from the Ulua Valley of Honduras. Ca. 600-900 A.D. This cylinder measures 6" wide by 4 3/4" tall. It features two different shaman figures in elaborate ceremonial dress. Each wearing a large backrack and extending a ceremonial staff. One figure is shown wearing a stylized Jaguar headdress, while the other wears one showing a bird form. The figures are facing, and are separated by two large flower symbols, that likely represent the Maya K'in flower/glyph- which symbolizes the sun/day and is related to the Maya calendar. The highly animated figural representations on this example are about as desirable as they get for Maya Ulua Valley pieces. Ex. Riverbend Gallery.

Mayan Harvest Idol Terracota Figurines Ancient Artifact Pre-Columbian Maize Gods
I have for sale 3 small Mayan artifacts in a nice decorative case. The label on the display case reads"Three pre-Columbian Mayan idol harvest idols- These were placed in their field to appease their gods and ensure a good harvest" The artifacts are in good condition. Considering their age-easily over 500 years old. However, due to the inherent fragile nature of the neck area on the figurines, both full-bodied figurines have a complete crack that separates the head from the body. The smaller figurine also appears to have a fracture but has stayed intact. They could easily be restored by a little bit of adhesive but I have chosen not to so as to allow the next owner the freedom to choose. Despite the cracks, these items have retained much of their original design with very little erosion. As seen in the photographs, the design contours ... morein the terracotta are in good condition and the handcrafted nature of these items are evidenced by their varying black and brown coloration. This is most likely a result of the curing process, similar to how other old world pottery was made. These artifacts are quite rare and interesting. Given their important role in the Mayan crop planting and harvest ceremonies. The Mayans used an agricultural technique called"slash-and-burn" where woodlands were cut down and burned in order to create fields to grow crops. This style of agriculture was not particularly sustainable for large populations because the soil quality would eventually degrade. The Mayans mainly grew maize and would sow crops in May and harvest them in November. To encourage a bountiful harvest. The Mayans would perform ritualistic ceremonies, including a ceremonial planting of these idols to curry favor with their gods. Historical records of the Mayan religion explains that in their mythology. Deities were involved in all aspects of life, including creating cornfields, planting and harvested corn, conducting business, and forming alliances. Hello. Here is an investment quality axe with its original handle still intact and attached too. This axe came to me many years ago from a Geologists estate(there is currently a another axe from the same estate running in a diff.auction) and from what I recall being told was that this men traveled all of the Americas in the 1940 and acquired these axes at that time. This magnificent axe looks actually like its from a much older time frame.stone age! Anyway the original handle is still very tightly attached to the superb stone axe head and the handle is cowered with raw hide and"sewn" with some sort of sinew with some natural fibrous material braided in with it. The axe(and a second one running currently in a diff auction) came to me some 20 years ago from a Geology engineers estate. With Slipware Glaze Decoration. c.300BC-200AD Now offering a pre-Columbian"Colima Dog" effigy vessel in glazed slipware pottery. Which dates from between 300BC- 200AD. Evidence of the slipware glaze decoration is all over the piece. Especially on one side, where color concentric circles can be seen. The lip of the opening in the top has some wear and a little loss, but no repairs are evident. This is a particularly attractive piece of ancient. Pre-Columbian Mexico pottery; from the estate of a Connecticut collector who passed away, purchased at auction around 2007. The Colima dogs were a breed used for sacrifice and were also part of the diet. Vessels like this were used in burials, as that is where most of them were discovered. The Colima dog is usually fat ... morein the belly area, which showed that it was well-fed and ready for a ceremony or the dinner table.
