J Bennage 1830's ovoid jar. Stamp is upside down. I can't make out the last# in year. What I can make out is 183. So stamp reads J Bennage 183? Jar is 9.5 in. tall, 7.5 wide, mouth opening 4.5 inches. No lid. Blue applied to handles front facing& stamping. Not cleaned. Small chips on mouth, 1/2 in. chip side of mouth, a few hairline cracks to back and side, a few pings from that look from making. Please see pics I've tried to show and describe everything. Pre-Columbian RARE bowls with applied figures—Bosque Period: 100 BC-500 AD Costa Rica Both of these rare bowls are natural earthenware with an applied and burnished red slip on the lower half and around the rim. On the larger of the 2. There are 2 sets of 3 applied figures. The smaller figure seems like a tadpole whereas the figures with the large heads have somewhat human facial characteristics. The numerous applied dots are usually associated with an alligator motif. Clearly there's a lot to interpret here. The smaller of the 2 bowls is in many ways similar to the larger one. However. The large headed creatures have more convincingly human facial features and the"tadpole" seems less like a tadpole. 1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic, complete figure; most likely 1,000 to 2,000 years old, or more. Complete figures are rare. 2) Dimensions. 3" high; 2.25" wide; 75 inch deep for body. 3) Medium. red clay. Hard fired under great heat with black patina such as is achieved with the Oaxaca method of firing with animal dung- to fuse a lot of black carbon to the surface layer of the red clay. 4) Provenance. I collected precolumbian sculpture from 1965 through 1967 in Mexico when I was a teenager and- from 1966 through'67- as an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. I bought this sculpture in a Mexican archaeological zone. When it was legal to do so, and brought it back to the U.S. when it was legal to do so. Authentic West Shore Railroad Company cancelled bond certificate for $1.000 issued in the early 1960's. The certificate is original, not a copy or a reproduction. Certificate has a beautiful vignette a river scene with a steam boat, sail boat, freighters and a locomotive passenger train going down the side of the river. It is a magnificent engraving and is one of the nicest I have seen. The West Shore Railroad was the final name of a railroad from Weehawken. NJ, across the Hudson River from New York City, north along the west shore of the river to Albany, NY and then west to Buffalo. It was organized as a competitor to theNew York Central and Hudson River Railroad, but was soon taken over by that company. The railroad is now part of CSX. The bond is unusual in that it has a due date of 2,361! This was truly the first junk bond. The certificate is 9.5" x 14" The certificate is in good condition with only a light fold mark in the center of certificate and has the normal punch cancellation and staple holes. Stock certificate collecting is becoming increasingly popular due to the historical significance of many of the companies and their increasing rarity. I am selling a household full of life-long collectables. I acquired this little statue years ago when I was down there. His ear has been recently chipped(not sure when. Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro, miniature ceremonial bowl
This is a polychrome. Slip painted terracotta, Chupícuaro, miniature tripod ceremonial bowl. One other example of this artifact can be seen online at the University of Maine’s Hudson Museum/Palmer-collections under the item number HM410. The bowl is red and tan with an intricate image and design embellishing the interior. It is amazing that the artisans of that time could have created this delicate vessel with such fine decoration and detail and for it to have arrived here, in this condition, from nearly 2000 years ago. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE, during the same time Teotihuacán flourished. Fortunately ... moreexcavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel.Condition– One of the tripod legs was evidently reattached but the repair is nearly invisible. There are some mineral deposits as would be expected. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt, a career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. During this period he amassed a fine collection of many pre-Columbian artifacts which he kept and displayed in his home in Austin. Guaranteed authentic.

Las Muñecas Antiguas~ Chancay Peruvian Mummy Dolls ~ Funerary Burial Dolls This is a exceptionally nice PreColumbian CHANCAY funerary textile cloth doll. It was made in Peru in the 1920's-40's out of ancient textiles from pre-Columbian burial cloth. The doll has a brown dress with a gold lace apron. She has long braids and a blue and cream band on her forehead. Her facial features are red and black yarn. This doll has been protected by being encased in a lucite box frame that is ready to either display on a shelf or. If desired, it can be hung on the wall or if preferred it is very easy to remove from the case with two screws. This is a very well made and heavy case. The doll is 9" x 3" The lucite case is 12" x 5" x 3" deep. They are both in excellent condition. The Chancay doll represents a blurring ... moreof the line between the past and the present. Indigenous Peruvian artisans recreate Chancay dolls(named after the Chancay culture that inhabited the central coast of Peru ca. AD 1000- 1476) in the old style using ancient fabrics. It is not unusual for these dolls to combine fabrics that originated at various locations along the coastal Peru- from the North Coast to the South Coast. And that are separated in time by thousands of years. It is not known whether Chancay dolls were made specifically to be placed in tombs as funerary offerings. Or if they represent possessions from life that were buried with their owners. Among pre-Columbian Peruvians. The custom of including articles that were important to the deceased was a common burial tradition. Discovered with many interments are tool kits used by spinners and weavers, fishing kits, weapons, and other objects. The relationship of the deceased and these practical funerary goods is obvious. These accoutrements of daily life, as well as superb weavings, jewelry, and other personal treasures, were believed to have utility in a hereafter. Fabulous example of Nayarit Chinesco pottery figure. Beautifully crafted seated female figure/vessel in terracotta. Anatomically correct with breasts. Buttocks, navel and labia. This vessel is expertly made with great detail, Chinesco style facial features, elephantine like hands and feet, applied discs at shoulders, and accented with white paint. It measures approximately 10 1/4" tall x 4 1/2" back to belly) x 6 1/2" shoulder to shoulder) the top lip of the vessel is approximately 5 1/2" in diameter and the opening itself is 2 1/2" in diameter. PRE COLUMBIAN PANAMA MACARACAS BOWL -- TRANSITIONAL
Another superb Panamian bowl A very rare piece depicting motifs from two different cultures. Four double panels of the alligator god[upside down] the most basic Macaracas theme. Combined with four panels of Y and C scrolls the most basic Conte theme. Conte dating from 600-800 AD followed by Macaracas 800-1000 AD. These are also geographically seperated by 150 miles or so. The bowl itself is a common Macaracas type from the Parita area. Most often found as plain red bowls[note: bottom of this bowl] from quite small to very large. Less often found polychromed like this one red and purple outlined in black on a cream background. For whatever reason the artist decieded to pay homage to the earlier culture. This is most rare and to be found in Intact condition is a bonus. The top and inner area of the rim shows great wear from use, little chips ... moreand dings to the paint, the rim is unbroken. This vessel has zero repaint, 100% original. If found today it would have been touched up to eliminate the weak area. It was excavated in the early 1950's by Eva and Neville Harte who are famous in Panama and the US. They donated many pieces of gold and ceramics to the American Museum Heye Foundation and most of the Panamian gold in the Dumbarton Oaks collection came from them.
