Ancient Net Anchor or Club Head, Shaped Black Rock
This shaped rock falls within the weight range for net anchors. But it seems unnecessarily worked for an anchor. The shaping is such that it could be a club or hammer head. So we had to attach a handle to see how it might function as a club. It's metamorphic rock that shows at least three layers of pressurized sediment. Or black rock(basalt? partially shaped in a river somewhere before somebody reshaped it for a special purpose. Just the rock weighs 2.5 lbs. Size is 4x5x2 inches. With handle, the club is 28 inches long We've seen net anchors on the internet claimed to be 2.500-3,500 years old. We wondered how they could be dated like that, but then realized that if they were found in an archeological site, they could be dated by where they were found in the material. We started with a buckthorn sapling with a fork that was just right. ... moreThen we wrapped it with tanned elk hide soaked in water. Using only two knots. Thin, pale green jade plaques Ca.1200-1000 B.C having incised carvings, each showing a crested bird's head with open work mouth. each perforated at the back of the head for suspension, one with a perforation above the bird eye. Celebrate days gone by with This Primitive Cast Iron Kettle. With Gate Mark! This is a Genuine Circa pre 1875 work of Antique Americana Folk Art! These Large vessels were crafted for use on an open fire as well as coal& wood burning stoves. The generation of cast iron. Beginning around the mid 1700's to around 1875 will have a"gate" mark, which looks like a long thin line on the bottom of the piece. This is where the iron entered the mold. Pieces made after 1875 were engineered so the iron entered the mold from one side or the other. These pieces have a smooth bottom, with no gate mark. Most of the major manufacturers of cast iron cookware began production in the late 1870s or early 1900s. Pots with gate marks were made from the mid-1700s until about 1875. These were often used not only to make hot beverages and the like. ... moreBut were often filled with water& left to steam over the fire at all times to help provide hot water for washing, laundering& general use as well as to provide humidity during the dry winter months. The bottom of this pot has a prominent gate mark& is tapered to fit on a wood fire stove or tripod ring. The handle is designed to hang suspended above an open fire. 7 is embossed upon the bird style spout. It is in Excellent Primitive condition! The original heavy duty bail style handle is not only still fully intact. It’s very solid and structurally sound. I would expect it to easily continue to hold this heavy pot for another 150 years! It is missing the original lid& shows its age with overall wear. The pot has no cracks or other damage. There is a beautiful heavy surface patina inside and out, which undoubtedly adds to it’s rustic charm, as it gracefully attests to this genuine antique’s age and history of use. A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. Museum Quality Pre Colombian tripod polychrome rattle dish
A very large Pre-Columbian Costa Rican painted tripod bowl with animorphic feet from the ancient Costa Rica/ Nicaragua region of Central America. Circa 1000 A.D. 1350 A.D. Measuring approximately 11" wide and about 9 1/2" tall, this vessel features three dramatic animorphic legs that contain rattles, as well as abstract painted designs. The bowl is finished in a cream slip with elaborate painted features in red, orange, and black. This type is specifically attributed to the Fonseca Variety of the Papagayo Polychrome type, from the Greater Nicoya region of Costa Rica/Nicaragua, Central America. Each leg is modeled in three dimensions with painted accents to depict facial features. Clay rattle balls are visible through the open mouths. The interior design. Though suffering from significant paint wear, depicts a very abstract stylized ... morefigural representation. Condition: Check out pictures they tell everything. Untitled 7 Artifacts from the Mexican Huasteca Culture about 1000 AD La Huasteca is a geographical and cultural region located in Mexico along the Gulf of Mexico which includes parts of the states of Tamaulipas. Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Guanajuato. It is roughly defined as the area in which the Huastec people had influence when their civilization was at its height in the Mesoamerican period. Today, the Huastecs occupy only a fraction of this region with the Nahua people now the most numerous indigenous group. However, those who live in the region share a number of cultural traits such as a style of music and dance along with religious festivals such as Xantolo. Small terra cotta figurines from this culture and region. They probably served a religious purpose as burial offerings or fertility symbols ... morerather than being toys for children. I date them very conservatively as they may be much older. They are from my private collection. This is a nice pre-columbian two hole. Two tone Animal Whistle. I believe it represents a dog. It has a hole on its side and a hole in the backend. The tail is the blow part. Put your finger on the side hole and makes a different whistle. The tailtip has been broken off but still very functional. Its 3 1/2" long and 3" tall. This piece was bought at the Wells Fargo Musuem Auction in Nov. 1986 in Tombstone, Az. Nice old piece for any collection.

The first pot is made from a black impasto without any apparent burnishing or slip decoration- it does however have a bat face and small protuberances molded into the pot. It also has two small loops to hang it. Finally. It has incised geometric decorations. This little pot is approximately 4.5 inches on its longest axis(tip of face to back of pot) The opening is just under two inches. The second pot is a more finely executed pot with both molded and painted decoration. The pot is decorated with a face the eyes. Nose and ears molded in. Classic Period, Circa 390-450 CE, South America(Peru) The lot comprising: 1 copper head ornament in the form of a feline mask with large ears, the almond-shaped eyes and teeth inlaid with shell; together with 1 similar copper head ornament depicting the visage of a noble with impressive headdress and almond-shaped eyes inlaid with shell(and possibly lapis) with one ear disc remaining. Both ornaments fitted with wire mounts within a custom rectangular wall display case with Plexiglas cover and orange felt lining. Pre columbian olmec fish found in Tabasco in exported to the US in the early 60's. With Certificate of authencity by Tom Shenk. It measures: Height 1" Depth 1/4" Lenght 3 1/2" It depicts a fish pendant with movement. Very classy, and fancy, there's a chip on the part of the tail where it bends, heavy minneralization. Biconical perforated on eye and fin for maximum support. Highly wearable, musseum quality item, in the Bach there are indentations where probably stones were inlaid but had since decay.
