Large Mayan feline(jaguar) head. It appears to have some green jade in parts. As seen in the photos when displayed under artificial light. It is a beautiful object. An quarter dollar coin has been placed on photo#2 to provide scale. Bought it from an antique shop at London´s Portobello Road antique market. Three flawless Precolumbian figures that have been in a private family collection since the early 1900s. They were gifted by a St.Paul(Minn. dentist in appreciation for being smuggled out of town after having been discovered in the wrong bedroom. These are carved from solid stone(Not pottery. and have been described as for a child. The round platform seat bears three animal heads said to represent protection for the child. The woman with hands on her breasts could be a fertility figure. Wet-nurse or mother. The seated figure, holding a tube in his right fingersa, perhaps as a musician or witch-doctor ready to blow evil spirits from a body. Years ago inspection by a museum curator had these artifacts described as Protu-Olmec figurines of the 1300-800 BC period. One stain on red/black side(pictured) Board is in very good condition wi normal wear and tear as would be expected on a roughly 100 year old item. The reprint of this famous Nicolaus Cederstrom painting is a print(can see the dotting) The original painting was done by Cederstrom in 1878. Nice looking wood and maybe some plaster frame. The framed art piece is 11-3/16" across. By 17.5" tall. Frame is made to look like columns on the side holding up a roof over the print. He had inherited this jug that was used by his great grandfather who was a Moonshiner ne ar Knoxville. TN. His great grandfather en ded up serving 3 years in prison for moonshining. The jug is as shown. Has a worn image of an eagle, with loss and peeling. The most interesting part to me are the cool blue handles. One has been dama ged. Repaired and some material missing. 1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 1,000 to 2,000 years old. 2) Dimensions. 5" high. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I collected precolumbian sculpture from 1965 through 1967 in Mexico when I was a teenager and- from 1966 through'67- as an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. I did not find this one myself. I bought it in a Mexican archaeological zone(when it was legal to do so) I don't have a specific recollection of where this is from. 72. Red, bliss, baby face, typical of Vera Cruz, Gulf Coast. Some people wonder if these blissful faces are people on drugs. I don't know. But I think the genre is appealing. PRE COLUMBIAN THE AMERICAS CENTRAL,SOUTH, FIGURINES/STATUES
The figurines are red clay and believed to be from Central or South America. I showed them to a historian and he believed them to be authentic. They are both in good shape except the larger one has a piece missing off of one of his hands. The larger one stands 2 ½” high and the smaller one stands 1 ¾” high.
