A pair of late 18th century Colonial/Trade Pipes. 1800 to 1865
2 early Colonial/Indian trade pipes would have had reed stems. the 1st pipe appears pristine as in not used the"leaf" bowl appears unused no glaze no carbonization in bowl does have mineralization in joint of bowl and stem. The 2nd pipe is an unusual twist pattern glazed and appears to have been used as there is carbon discoloration in the bowl. Neither were found with the stem the leaf was found from a factory that burned in Philly in the 1850's the Glazed pipe was a field find in Ohio Unknown manufacturer. As I haven't found another twist pipe that looked like it. I used to do Historical Recreations of the US Fur-trade Era Colonial-1840. Both pipes were from reputable dealers. Again the straight striped"leaf" pipe was new never used factory destroyed by fire in the 1850's I believe the used glazed pipe is ... moreolder as I can find no pipes with the twist pattern it has. It has mold lines so I assume it was a Commercial Piece but no USA records I can find on it. May be European. Ioffer a 14 day no question return policy on all my sales. Unidentified New Mexico Artifact, Spanish Conquistador Iron Ornate Shoe Tack?
Unidentifed iron artifact Found during a high mountain excursion in New Mexico Found with a metal detector on a clearing in an area with Spanish Conquistador History Its obviously not a tack used on horses. Nor for common carpentry My presumption is based on the fact that centuries ago men wore shoes that were kept together with tacks. Which may make sense due to the ornate workmanship of this particular shoe tack. I'll continue to do research. Watch this listing and check back frequently to see new information. Antique MJB Pewter? Metal Cup
Not sure what I have so I'm starting the bid low. Hopefully. Someone smarter than me can figure it out. I have tried and all I can say is it must be rare and/or very unique. I believe it is pewter or some other type of similar metal material. It stands on 2 3/4" tall. It is 3 1/4" wide. These measurements my not be exact.but close. It has a raised"MJB" logo on the front. On the back are some trademark markings with"USA" stamped in. On the inside is something spelled out but because of the angle. I couldn't see it or make it out. There are also markings on the inside, MJBLXX11" with USA under it. I took very close pictures so you can see the slight imperfections and small scratches. This is an old clay/terra cotta vessel(pot) from the private collection of a retired merchant marine who traveled extensively in South America. The vessel measures approximately 4 and 1/4" long. 3" wide and 1" deep. This may be an artifact of pre-Columbian, Peruvian, Mayan, Aztec, Mexican or Ecuadorian origin. The vignette shows a steam engine locomotive with a coal and/or grain depot in the background. These lights have been painted with automobile paint(about 20 years ago) AND are in great condition for their age. No broken parts. No chips, no broken glass on either one. We bought them at an estate sale over 20 years ago, painted them and then never used them. They are missing the wicks; the brass wick-turners turn freely. Inside has been repainted black with gray reflector paint. The kerosene storage pots can be turned right or left side for adjustment. Some Specifics: One lantern in 9 1/4" tall with'Brown' embossed on the top. The other is 9" tall with Ford(the logo in script) Model marked on the top along with Cin'i. O. USA underneath it- there is another ... moremarking above Ford that looks like'MAR 00" but we are not certain of this marking or what it means. Another top marking is not fully clear(may be Corcoran. 3 Pre-Incan Pre-Columbian Artifacts, Chimu Backstrap Loom with Textile, Shawl +
The story of these astonishing 3 artifacts began off of the coast of Peru near the town of Chimbote sometime between 1000 A.D. and 1500 A.D. They are believed to have belonged to a woman from the Chimu Civilization. As they have strong similarities to other Chimu textiles. The Chimu Civilization was the largest civilization to thrive in Peru. Just before the Inca came to power around 1500 A.D. Just as today. Life near Chimbote, called the great City of Chan Chan in the Chimu period, revolved around the sea and trade goods. Fine textiles were prized as status symbols of wealth and power. And traded for goods found only in the interior regions of Peru. Women who excelled at the art of weaving lived in better housing within the City of Chan Chan. And were provided with the best food and care. They made tunics. Loin cloths, and carry bags for ... morethe politicians and elite, and for trade to bring in the best goods for the elite. Other women weavers lived outside of the City. And made clothing and bags for the general population. The woman's tomb containing these artifacts was uncovered deep in the sand near Chimbote in the early 1960's. This ancient woman was discovered with her backstrap loom. And still on the loom was the unfinished textile she was buried with, to finish in the after-life. Her burial shawl was wrapped around her head. Face and upper body. The part of the shawl here is the top piece that covered her face and hair. The smallest textile artifact is believed to be the remnants of a shoulder strap to a purse that carried her necessities to the afterlife. The tight weave of these textiles is astounding. And the strap has a pattern of long woven rows with deliberate small gaps woven between them. It's fascinating. A technician aboard the famous hospital ship HOPE was skilled at carpentry. And made the lucite and wood cases for these artifacts, and mounted the loom within its case. Being a people of the sea. The Chimu designs often depict fish, pelicans, and sea otters.
