A wonderful ancient Late Phase 3- Early Phase 4 Nazca Earthenware bowl. Dating to approximately 250 B.C- 125 A.D. A beautiful round bottomed bowl with wide mouth and subtly everted sides. The shoulder of the vessel decorated with a thick band of half-beans in a variety of colour combinations. Set against a red slip background. An unusual variation of the full-bean design. The ancient Nazca culture. Located on the Southern coast of Peru, existed from 370 B.C. through to 540 A.D. The period saw much development of the arts, perhaps most notably in the area of slip painting, as is evidenced in this piece. Ancient Peruvians left no written records, thus their material remains are the only existing link to this long gone and intriguing ancient people. Height: approximately 4 inches. And is on the San Marcos River. The best and truest Martindale points are a little cock-eyed-I always thought this was a poor example of knapping, but over the years here in Central Texas, I have come to realize that more regular Martindale points did not fit the cultural template-why I don't know-I just missed talking with the man who could have explained this to me by a few thousand years. What is even more puzzling is that the base is ground which usually marked very carefully symmetric points in other cultures, such as the Eastern Palmer. This is a Historically significant piece for several reasons! In the early ninth century A.D Aguateca was the capital of a powerful Maya dynasty in what is now Guatemala Stela#2 commemorates a victory over Seibal in the year 735 AD, It was erected by the third ruler of Dos Pilas(who it portrays) Attempted theft of the stela in 1975 left it cracked and broken, therefore a rubbing like this can never be made again. This rubbing was done in 1972. Two years later in 1974 this Stela was cut up in an attempted theft. It was later returned to the site. But now has cracks. Joan W. Patten(1924-2005) was an American Sculptor. And former Olympic Diver from California. Her rubbings of Classic and Pre-classic Mayan Sculptures adorn many Museums and Universities throughout the world. Superb Pre-Columbian Chorrera stamp seal/sello
This listing is for the best Pre-Columbian stamp seal I have ever owned. I obtained this one in a collection of a local collector who had a penchant for stamp seals. He had 10 in his Pre-Columbian collection and this was the best. This piece has a lot going for it. Most importantly the iconography. The stamp seal contains 3 panels,each showing a stylized pregnant female in the birthing position.very rare to find depictions like that. I could see this stamp being used for a Pre-Columbian version of our baby shower or birth celebration. Also quite unusual, the handle is a rattle too(not very loud today though) From the Chorrera culture of Ecuador, it is intact save a chip on top front. Also has correct patination, manganese deposits and remnants of ancient pigment, all great indicators of it's authenticity. This National Washboard Co#864 wooden and glass washboard is 18" long(including the leg) and 8 1/2" wide. The ridged and rippled glass is 7" x 8 1/4" Between the ridges imprinted in the glass is the word"National. These were made in Chicago and Memphis. Because of its size it may have been used for lingerie or more delicate fabrics. We believe this belonged to my husband's grandmother who emigrated to this country in the early 1900's.
