Archeological evidence dates human occupation of the area as far back as 1500 BCE. With sites here contemporary with San Lorenzo on the Gulf Coast and Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico. One period of the area’s development is called the Los Ortices era which began around 500 BCE. During this time the elements which characterize the pre-Hispanic peoples of Colima appear such as shaft tombs and a distinctive ceramic style called“rojo bruñido” or burnished red. The next phase called Comala, covers the time period from around 100 to 600 CE, centered on a site of the same name. Comala people would perfect burnished red pottery and develop representations of people and animals with skill and fluid lines. The best known of these figures are known as the“fattened dogs” The Comala site shows influence from Teotihuacan. Around 500 CE, another site in Armería developed along the river of the same name. These 16 artifacts were collected by a dentist and his wife working in Guatemala in 1970.I am not an expert on these items but will try and answer any questions I can. The carved frog is 3.5 inches long and the large axe head is 3 inches long.The bear pendant is 1.7 inches tall and looks to be carved from quartz. I believe the axe heads are jadeite. The large head is 1.8 inches tall and 1.6 inches wide. The what appears to be a musical instrument is 3 inches long. The carved jaguar axe head is 1.7 inches tall and looks to be carved from black onyx or jade. Pre-Inca Pottery Lamballeque/ Chimu Period 1100-1500 AD I am selling a portion of my family collection that has been in our family for well over 45 years. Due to downsizing and not having the storage room any longer I would rather others enjoy these unique pieces of old pottery. They have been stored in glass display cases for most of their time while in my care. They all come from a non smoking environment and great care will be taken in their packing. Double boxed for extra cushioning and excess bubble wrap. These were all aquired by my family while travelling and living in Peru and Bolivia. All the items were aquired from various sources and were verified by a local museum curator at the time. None have documents and providing carbon dating documentation even the most elaborate museums cannot afford. Knowing where the items were found ... moreis key and all in my collection were aquired in archeological ventures. An art piece from the Lamballeque possibly early Chimu era. The condition has been repaired rear leg(see photos) and is ~ 22cm long. 9.5cm wide and 25cm high. The Lambayeque period dates to approximately 1000 AD. Extending to the rise of the Chimú Empire in 1350 AD. The Chimú were the residents of Chimor, with its capital at the city of Chan Chan, a large adobe city in the Moche Valley of present-day Trujillo city. The culture arose about 900 AD. The Inca ruler Tupac Inca Yupanqui led a campaign which conquered the Chimú around 1470 AD, This was just fifty years before the arrival of the Spanish in the region. Consequently, Spanish chroniclers were able to record accounts of Chimú culture from individuals who had lived before the Inca conquest. Similarly, Archaeological evidence suggest Chimor grew out of the remnants of Moche culture; early Chimú pottery had some resemblance to that of the Moche. This is a really nicely created Pre a Columbian double Jar and spout stirrup vessel typical of Muisca Culture of Columbia. It was recreated in painstaking detail with patina and manganese deposits. I believe a series of Pre Columbian art pieces have been made in Britain and this is one of several I have purchased. Nicely done. Sits on two pottery rings. Great for the lower budget collector of pre Columbian artifacts and from a culture not typically seen online. Great eye catching decor. Muisca culture is from Columbia circa 5000C to 1500BC. This is an impressive lot of 37 Pre Columbian spindle whorl bead stones with great carvings. There a lots of different patterns and shapes collected over Peru and probably Mexico but the exact location isn't known. These are terracotta or pottery beads used on small sticks to aid weavers in spinning yarn. This is still done by the indigenous peoples of South. Meso America and Mexico. The beads are large many over an inch. See photos. These beads are very old and likely 500-1200 AD. They are typical of many you will see on line or auctions of Pre Columbian bead stones. Pre-Columbian MAYAN POLYCHROME POTTERY pieces
Part of a small collection brought back by an agricultural adviser team that did a lot of travel by foot and mule on farms in Latin America in the mid-1960s. Some of these sherds have multi-colored designs. Some could be made into interesting pieces of"ethnic style" jewelry or pendants, or could be shadow-box framed or mounted on a small pedestal.there are chips and very thin cracks- THE decorations and colors are fascinating- these were found carefully wrapped in a box marked"South Honduras Choluteca- destroyed by road construction. Such pieces were"crumbling out of the road cuts and being compacted into the road bed. The most interesting things in this group may be the human face depictions on three pieces that appear to have been pot legs- the features are done in a very different manner- apparently both by adding small ... morepieces of clay and by incising the clay before heating. This site, destroyed by construction, must have included tool making, as there are many pieces of obsidian and other stone- some of which were probably tools and some perhaps by-products of tool manufacture. Two pieces may be fragments of animal bone. Most potshards are either tan or multicolored, and a few are black. It is a very interesting and attractive group of items from the Central American area. I will pack carefully and ship USPS within the US.
