Ancient Enigmatic Carved Stone? Disk Shape Gaming Piece? Tool Symbolic Artifact
This item was purchased in a mixed lot several years ago and I have not seen anything else like it before or since. I believe it is stone and has enigmatic symbols carved on one side and a single drilled depression on the reverse. It measures approximately 2 1/4" in diameter& 1/4" thick. I do not know the origin of this item for sure but the lot was a Pre Columbian collection of figures and fragments made of stone and pottery from the Americas. Your guess is as good as mine as to it's use or purpose. I have made a rubbing of the disk but the first picture shows the mysterious symbols well. With typical shamanistic head cap in relief, dating to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican sculptural tradition, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250, displays an open mouth, a hooked nose, a raised, but rounded point on each cheek, and round, pierced-through eyes. There is a drill hole on each side of the mask at near eye level. The reverse side is concave. The size is smaller than most Colima masks, so may have been created for a child or small dwarf. A very odd looking small size pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) Moche culture ceramic stylized whistle(I cannot tell what it was supposed to be. Animal, vegetable or mineral? from coastal Peru, dating from about 100 to 800 AD, more or less. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, with a chipped area on the front end(see pictures) possibly the reason I cannot identify what it represents, about 34 mm(1-3/8 inches) in length, about 20 mm tall when viewed from the side and 15 mm at the widest part. The Moche culture was very creative in various art forms, especial figural and sculpture works. Symbolism was a very important part of their culture. Note: I tested whistle with canned air and a sound came through. So it probably works. Please check the dimensions. AUTHENTIC Lot PRE COLUMBIAN JALISCO Pottery Vase Bowl Platter Mexico NO RESERVE
I purchased a large lot of pottery in a high-end auction. And these three pieces of Pre-Columbian pottery were included in it. A very old auction label on the bottom of one of the pieces identifies these as Jalisco. The vase in this lot has red painted details and is 4.5 inches tall. With an opening at the top of 3.5 inches in diameter. It is a beautiful piece but does have a chip on the top rim, which is shown in photos. There are also two very old labels on the bottom, which can be removed by the buyer if desired. The small bowl here is 4.25 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. It has beautiful firing marks. Although it too has chips, shown in photos. The large platter/bowl is 9.5 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. Again. Nice firing marks and overall a great looking piece. A Large Pre-Columbian Colima Standing Dog Vessel. Protoclassic ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250. This sculpture of a bulbous vessel in the form of a Colima dog. Dating to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican sculptural tradition, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250, displays an open mouth and an up-turned tail. Distinctive features include: the fine-line incising of the natural formation of the eyes, the open mouth, and the detailed nose& nostrils. The ears are naturalistically formed, perked upward, the top of the back forms a spout with a flaring rim. The burnished red-to-reddish brown slip exhibits a beautiful patina enhanced by ancient encrustations combined with deeply ingrained areas of manganese oxide. This is a slipped blackware stuccoed bowl with a pseudo-cloisonne exterior from the Middle-Late Classic periods. Teuchitlán I-II phases, A.D. 400-900. It has a similar color scheme as one that can be seen online at the University of Notre Dame’s Snite Museum of Art described as“ Bowl with Life/Death Face and Diving Birds” from Jalisco, Mexico. Condition: This bowl was broken into six parts with one piece being reattached There is no evidence of additional repair. It does seem that a piece is missing but an adept restorer might overcome this deficiency with a stucco patch. Some of the decoration has been lost. In the right hands this could be restored to a very attractive piece. Dimensions: Diameter is 7 ¼” Height is 2 ½” wall thickness is ¼” Provenance- This artifact was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis ... morePratt. Antique book from 1916 titled The Economic History Of Wisconsin Vol.1 By Fredrick Merk. The book is 414 pages long and comes with a fold out map of wisconsin. It deals with Wisconsin matters dating from the 1800's. The pages and cover are in good condition. The binding is partly loss but not real bad and could be glued with little effort. LOT 3 AUTHENTIC PRE COLUMBIAN PERUVIAN POTTERY ARTIFACTS 3 STATUES
Sometimes I see very rare and special antiquities collected by old Charleston families going through our local high end estate sales and such is the case with these three marvelous ancient pre Columbian Peruvian pottery figures. These terrific antique clay figures measure 4.75 inches tall by 4.5 inches long; 4.5 inches tall by 4 inches long; and 3 inches tall by inches long. Respectively. I've included numerous pictures in an attempt to accurately represent their design, quality, condition and overall beauty. Though I am not an expert in pre Columbian artifacts. It's very clear this wonderful group of ancient pottery figures are quite special and not something easy to come by. When they came to the auction where they sold, all that was known is that they had been in the grandfather's collections going back to the early 1900's ... morebut no other specific information as to whom or how they were originally obtained was provided, though it was clearly long ago and many years prior to any regulations limiting export so such historically relevant pieces by collectors and tourists. The only information with the figures was a hand written note stating they were of the pre Columbian Chimu culture, Peru 900-1470. To ship these incredible ancient collectibles. I would require they shipped via signature service UPS or USPS, fully insured for selling price. I am willing to sell and ship these artifacts internationally however I would require they be shipped via Priority Express International(USPS)with signature service at delivery and as well as buyer assuming all in country taxes and fees upon arrival. Up for your consideration is what appears to be a shaft of a fishing rod. I is made of what I believe to bamboo. And cork. I guess a collector of old fishing equipment might be interested in it.
