Work is ongoing at this site. Which is around 1.5 kilometers east of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum, Lintong County, Shaanxi Province. It is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to China. Upon ascending the throne at the age of 13(in 246 BC) Qin Shi Huang, later the first Emperor of all China, had begun to work for his mausoleum. It took 11 years to finish. It is speculated that many buried treasures and sacrificial objects had accompanied the emperor in his after life. A group of peasants uncovered some pottery while digging for a well nearby the royal tomb in 1974. It caught the ... moreattention of archeologists immediately. They came to Xian in droves to study and to extend the digs. They had established beyond doubt that these artifacts were associated with the Qin Dynasty(211-206 BC) The State Council authorized to build a museum on site in 1975. When completed. People from far and near came to visit. Xian and the Museum of Qin Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses have become landmarks on all travelers' itinerary. Life size terracotta figures of warriors and horses arranged in battle formations are the star features at the museum. They are replicas of what the imperial guard should look like in those days of pomp and vigor. The museum covers an area of 16.300 square meters, divided into three sections: No. 1 Pit, No. 2 Pit, and No. 3 Pit respectively. They were tagged in the order of their discoveries. No. 1 Pit is the largest, first opened to the public on China's National Day, 1979. There are columns of soldiers at the front, followed by war chariots at the back. Antiquities dealer and expert, Alex G. Malloy. The Hassunan Culture was a Neolithic archae ol ogical culture(circa 5.800 B.C.E. that flourished in northern Mesopotamia. It was named after Tell Hassuna. Near Mosul, in Iraq. The best studied remain is the settlement of Yarim-Tepe I, excavated by a Soviet expedition between 1969 and 1975. The settlements of the tribes of the Hassunan culture measured 1 to 2 hectares in area. The closely spaced rectangular mud-brick dwellings. With many rooms(three to ten and even more) were sometimes grouped around a court. Various outbuildings were found, including buildings for drying and storing grain. This is an antique or vintage terracotta African tribal face sculpture. It is very heavy for it's size and measures 7" in length from the top of the head to the chin x approx. 5 3/4" wide x approx. 4 3/4" high sitting flat on the ground. It has a green glazed finish. The condition is very good with some chips around the bottom edge of the backside. All sales are final and as is. We buy our items at auctions. A rare and well preserved ancient Chinese Han dynasty cocoon jar. Dating to approximately 206 B.C. 220 A.D. The cocoon jar is of typical form. With pedestal base, wide voluminous body, short neck and thick everted and faceted rim. The decoration is unusually well preserved and depicts elaborate curvilinear motif, delineated in black, orange and white pigments. So-called cocoon jars are a rare form of ancient Chinese ceramic. Believed to have been used for storing liquids such as wine in China's Han dynasty. This is a particularly fine example, with good pigment preservation. Height: approximately 9 3/4 inches. Greek Terracotta Nude Eileithyia (Goddess of Childbirth) Statue Figure 8in
I listed this terracotta a few days ago in the Antiquities- Roman catagory for $395. My thought was that the figure represents Venus and was either from Roman Asia Minor or Roman Egypt. A kind ebayer then contacted me and offered the information that the figure actually represents Eileithya. The Greek Goddess of childbirth(the cult of Eileithya originated on Crete and then spread throughout the Greek and eventually Roman worlds. With this information I ended the listing early in order to conduct more research. I found the following: A similar figure to this one appeared on ebay.uk a while ago which the dealer listed as 4th Century BC. There exists another example in the archaelogical museum at Paestum which dates to c500- c450BC and is clearly of high classical style. The details among these three differ. Though the general form and composition ... moreis the same. This figure may be a terracotta votive of late Classical, Hellenistic, or even Roman origin which was based upon a Classical period cult statue dedicated to Eileithya. There is also the possibility that this statue is a grand tour copy, or even a modern copy. Eilithia holds her robe open to reveal her nude body and sculpturally engage the surrounding space. Children cling to her from behind each shoulder. The statue stands approx. 8 1/4in. It is intact and unrepaired with a few minor chips and a larger loss to the figure's hair. There is a small amount of wear to the details and scattered surface deposits along with scattered minor pitting to the surface. From a private CT collection. Said to have been formed in the 1920's. This is a very rare. Large, old, unique, detailed, and beautiful antique Japanese Terracotta jardiniere/ bowl/ pot with a carved 3 toed Dragon. I found this bowl/ garden pot in my Great Grandparents cellar back in the 1950's. And it had been there when they purchased the house in the late 1800's. It's a very detailed and unique piece. It's in good condition considering it's age. It does have one area of damage on the side that's about 1 by 1 inch and a hairline crack running up to the rim. But the integrity is very solid. This area could be easily repaired, given it's not in the carved area. This large bowl/ pot measures 15 inches in diameter and stands 9 inches high and is very heavy.
