1920'S DANISH ART POTTERY HJORTH TERRACOTTA LINE BOWL WITH GEESE EXCELLENT
A hard to find bowl in Horth's terracotta line that was manufactured in the 20's& 30's. Hjorth probably produced 80 different shapes in this line and only two bowls and most of them were decorated with fruit. The bowl is 8" x 2" and is in excellent condition with a minor glaze rub which I have pictured.

This studio pottery jug measures 8cms in height and 11cms from the front of the pourer to the back of the handle. It has a green glazed interior and top of the handle and the maker’s details are impressed on the base. Nice condition olive pattern 8" bowl Made of Terracotta clay- unmarked. I have had this bowl forever and always used it for olives- looked great on the table. Bowl measures just short of 8" wide by 3" tall. I see no chips. Cracks or crazing. The weirdness on the bottom is glaze residue which could be polished off if you wanted to but is nice and smooth and will not scratch your table so I never bothered with it. Bought it at an estate sale years ago and was told it was from Italy but am not positive- just repeating what I was told. This is an Estate Find. Don't know much about it except what I have read. It appears it was used for incense by the burn marks on the inside. This is what I can tell you: It was hand thrown on a potters wheel. The dragon, claws and finish was hand applied. The decorative incising around the top of the small pot was also hand applied. It is about 3 inches tall and the top diameter is 3-1/2" Appears to be in overall good to excellent condition considering its age. I am guessing it is somewhere from the 1920 to the 1940. Up for auction is this beautiful handmade. Hand-painted, statue of a man in a suit with a bird on his shoulder. It is made of terra cotta and by the celebrated artist. Joan Amparan. It measures 5" inches tall(12.7 cm) 3" inches wide(7.6 cm) and 2.2" inches thick(5.6 cm) This unique piece of hers features an indented center and curious expression. It is signed on the bottom and is beautiful when displayed. The bird's tail does look to have an unfortunate chip but it is minor. There seem to be a couple hairline cracks near the neck and one teeny tiny one on the bottom near his feet. They could be original separations from when it was made but I am not sure. The original dating approximately between 1550 to 1750 A.D. was along with a number of remarkable objects and royal portrait heads cast in bronze. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. Their ruler. This modeled cast head is of a Queen Mother who in fact was the mother of a sitting Oba, playing an important role at the royal court ... moreQueen Mothers(Iyobas) sat in regal splendor at the court where she served as a chief and as an advisor to the King. She in fact was the chief of her own village a few miles outside of Benin itself. Due to her status and rank she was allowed to wear certain royal regalia limited to her. The King and the war Chief(Ezomo) of the kingdom. The headdress on the figure shows the headdress known as the âbirdâs beakâ which is a wig with coral attached to form a net-like hair covering. In fact this large headdress was composed of a network of precious coral beadwork. The vertical marks worked in the forehead represent small iron staples found on older heads and whose meaning is still undefined except to say that iron was a symbol of power and the use or wearing of it was restricted to royals. This head is modeled after a cast bronze original and is shown on a well decorated base. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. This early set is made of terra cotta redware pottery(may contain lead so I would not recommend cooking in these pieces) The pieces are hand decorated with kind of a sail motif but each piece is different. They measure 10" by 3 1/2" 8" by 2 1/4" and 5" by 2" They do show a bit of wear but still nice vintage condition. as I have two more sets similar to this from the same estate and will gladly combine shipping on multiple purchases. It is small but does not qualify as a miniature and may have had a true utilitarian use from the Pre Classic period of Western Mexico. Has only a few remaining pigmented areas and it has still much soil and mineral deposits. Has two sides with"beaks" and two other sides with just a rounded protrusion. The piece shows the wear and erosion characteristic of excavated artifacts. But it is in overall good condition. The pot has some chips, but nothing too major. There are mineral deposits. Djenne area, Materials, Terracotta Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, 5 inches H. x 3 inches W. Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, fragment(head and neck only) Cracks and chips. FRAGILE! Terracotta head Fragment. Inland Niger Delta Mali Additional Information: A terracotta fragment ... moredepicting a head with neck. This head is modeled in a style known as proto-Dogon found in Mali in the inland Niger Delta. Based on its facial details. Numerous clay objects have come to light from the great âInland Delta Culturesâ of the Niger River and Benue River confluence. The age of this interesting figure is unknown. I have not had this piece thermoluminescence tested for age. But can recommend a laboratory if you would like one. This fragment may not be an old piece but its surface shows that it could come from a grave and was therefore of probable ritual purpose. After being decorated the figure was fired at a relatively low temperature to give it the brownish-red color that it has. This process is still followed in the pottery found in the region today. This interesting piece would certainly add an âarchaeologicalâ aspect to a collection. See examples of full figures of the same style in Karl-Ferdinand Schaedler.
