4 1/2 inch long Native American stone hammer/axe head
I am curious about an aspect of this piece as there are four areas where a polishing or smoothing operation has been worked on the sides(three sections) and on the back side hammer face. This can be seen in my third photo. I am not sure when or why this was done as it creates an oddity of this piece. The stone material looks like a hard grey granite. I will add additional photos by tomorrow and I will also complete this description. There was no other pieces with smoothed areas like this one in the old collection this piece came out of. This piece was reported to have been found in the southern Virginia Banister river area of Halifax county. This piece measures 4 1/2 inches long x 3 1/4 inches wide x about 1 inch thick and weighs about a pound.

This piece is out of an old collection and was reported to have been found at the Banister river area of Halifax county in southern Virginia. It measures 7 1/4 inches long x 4 1/4 inches wide x a thickness of 3/4 of an inch. I weighs about 1 1/2 pounds. ANTIQUE GENUINE OLD NATIVE AMERICAN STONE AXE HEAD TOMAHAWK ARTIFACT
We have for your viewing and bidding pleasure a genuine old original Native American artifact. We believe it to be a stone axe head and/or tomahawk. From the information we received it is from the Midwest area of Iowa or Illinois. It is grooved on both sides and comes to a rather blunt sharp shape at the bottom edge about 1/8” to 3/16” Across the top it is shaped in to about 1” thick. The total thickness by the top groove area is about 1 5/8” From the top to the tip it is a good 5” high. Width wise below the grooved area it is 3” At the bottom edge of the tomahawk there is some chipping of the stone. This axe head is very attractive and has a very good feel with the old original patina. It weighs 1 lb. 12.5 oz. We are listing this antique genuine old Indian artifact. So. Along with a large number of flint pieces, was purchased from a collection at an estate sale this year. The stone is in excellent condition with no damage. It shows no signs of ever having been used. Hard to find artifact. Primitive Stone AX or Hammer Head. It has a couple of white paint flecks on it because of how it was recently stored Im sure they would scrub right off but I didn't want to alter or damage the item. This is a neat old Native American hammer or horse tether from South Dakota. It's about 5 1/2 inches long. The thing that makes this unique is at some time long ago. It must have split during use, and has a flat side. It must have been natural, because although flat, it is rough so wasn't cut. Makes for the perfect item for the desk as a weight, or just displays well in a collection. Odds of something fracturing like this would be small, never seen one like it.
