Ancient Indian Artifact Grooved Hammer Stone Native American Arrowhead Axe
Here is an ancient Native American Indian stone hammer or axe found in the badlands of eastern Montana. The groove is not deep. But it is very evident, even though it did not photograph well. One end of the stone has been broken off. I hate to think that it may have broken when someone got conked on the head with it. It weighs nearly 1 1/2 lbs and measures 4 1/4" long, 3" wide and 1 7/8" thick.

This is a Full Groove Stone Axe Head Relic. This Indian Artifact was given to me among several pieces from a friend. It was found in the Western North Carolina area. This beautiful relic is in excellent condition. It measures approximately 3 inches in length and approximately 1 3/4 inches in width. It weighs almost 4 ounces. There are a few surface scuffs/chips which appear to be from normal use. The detail is simply splendid. It was grooved out almost without any imperfections and the blade edge is excellent condition. These are a first find for me. Both are mostly based from a hard iron like ston(steatite? They also have some sandstone mix. I have seen conglomerate rocks of this mixture but never in a toll form. 1-3 1/2" long. middle width 3" Both ends taper down to sharp points. An unusual shapes groove that is in top elevated. These is what I have gathered from researching. The secons and smaller one looks more like a traditional axe. NIce deep groove on top.The Bit end is exposed only of the hard stone. Originally I thought of this as a nice hoe or digging tool. After some research and taking a look at the Bit end that curves inward I have seen other similar tools that claim to be an axe head9handheld or shafted) There are some shalfting marks on both sides. I lean more towards an axe head, but the other is not out of the question. Carved in hard-gray stone with extra-wide shallow groove, angular poll, three-quarter grooved design, one flat side. Very good condition. Smooth surface, age wear, unfortunately the other end is broken off in antiquity as sign of heave use. Size: 4" long x 2 1/2" wide x 2" thick with over 1" wide ridged groove.

But grinded parts at the upper side showing that has to be made in Early Neolithic times! Core axes normally play the greatest role in the Younger Maglemose Culture(8900-6400 bc) Kongemose Culture(6400-5400 bc. and the older Ertebølle- Ellerbek Culture( Kitchen Midden Culture) 5400-4000 bc. During the early Maglemose period. Core axes came into ever more common use and gradually replaced the earlier flake axes. Core axes were manufactured out of smaller pieces of flint by knapping away surplus stone along the side edges. The new axes used less raw material and were easier to resharpen than the flake axes, which explains why they came to dominate over the older ... moretype. Wear induced polishing along the cutting edge indicates that these axes were probably used to trim and finish wood. This is further supported by microscopic analysis of the cutting edge of axes recovered from the"Ochre Graves" at Bögebakken. Many archaeological finds have shown that core axes were hafted at right angles to the handle in the same way as an adze. Core axes are normally unknown from the Neolithic period! The rhombical type of adze is unsymmetrical to the vertical and the horizontal plane. The side-edges shaped from opposite sides. Making the cross section assume the shape of a rhomb or a parallelogram. The cutting edge is parallel with the sides. The length of this wonderful artifact is 84 mms! Made of Danien flint! New Page 1 Unusual Stone Vessel/ Paint Pot I don't collect these types of artifacts. So I don't know much about them. I asked a few other collectors who thought this could be a paint pot, but I'm not sure, it is some type of small vessel though. I found this with a few others in a large artifact collection I purchased. It has a nice patina and is in excellent condition except for a fleabite here and there. The lines you see in the pictures are either erosion or minor pitting, but not cracks or repairs. This pot has several holes drilled on the outside and rim that do not go through and I guess were ornamental. There is one hole on either side under the rim which does go through and may have been used for hanging though I cannot be sure. I don't know a whole lot about this area of Native Americana so. this stone axe head is carved from hard-gray stone and has a wide. 1 1/4 in. to 1 1/2 in. groove. A 1/2 in. deep groove. It is grooved on 3 sides with one flat side. It is 4 1/2 in. long. 3 in. at it's widest and and 2 1/4 in at it's thickest. I got this in Southern Ohio. VERY NICE PRE-COLUMBIAN SONORA STONE AXE HEAD 3/4 GROOVE. From the North of Sinaloa and the plains of the rivers Fuerte. Mayo and Yaqui to the Sierra Madre Occidental stood the Huatabampo Tradition made up of farming communities using the variety of coastal resources. From the Mayo region, Sonora, came this very nice piece carved in hardstone, good overall symmetry, 3/4 grooved with rounded poll. The grooved axe resembles the stone celt in having a wedge-shaped cutting edge for wood working. The axe, however, has a groove for mounting the axe, close to the poll, on a wooden handle. Pretty good condition. Some blows in cutting edge caused at the time of discovery. Size: 5" long x 2" wide x 1 3/4" deep.

My long-deceased Grandfather. Who was born in 1909 in Ephrata PA, found this finely detailed and beautifully preserved relic when he was a child as he was walking home from school. It was laying in a freshly plowed field and it caught his eye since it was washed clean by a heavy rain earlier that day. It has been in my family for nearly a century. I'm a collector of many things, but Native American artifacts is not one of them, so it's time to offer this exquisite piece to a serious collector of Native American artifacts. The condition is exceptional and it remains in the same un-altered condition in which it was found nearly a century ago. The patina is original. It looks like much time was spent grinding and smoothing this weapon(or tool) into it's current graceful shape. It's my understanding that there were many tribes who lived in the Lancaster County PA region during the 1600's through the 1800's. It has been cleaned recently so it doesn't have much of a patina. Made of polished silver and it does have tiny scratches just from being a polished piece that's been worn and loved. This piece is not perfect, but it a great item and it is in very good condition. This is between 1.76-1.77 on the index which means it could be a Ruby. A Rhodalite, or a Garnet. I lean towards a Rhodalite because of the color- it's a deep red-ish pink-ish gem. I don't know if this is a natural gem stone or if it's a well made man made gem. Beautifully diefined edge and quite sharp. I found it unique that only one side was tooled for the handle, clever since that's all it takes anyway. 100% authentic- we never buy from puplic auctions since 90% of that is fake. Which I recently purchased at an Estate Sale of a serious Native American artifact collector. We were told that this beauty was found in the 1920’s or 1930’s. This head has great patina. And aging. It measures approximately 4½” wide x 8-1/2” tall x almost 2" thick at the thickest point. And weighs in at almost 4 lbs! There are some great“marks of battle” chips.
