Very Old Primitive Stone Axe Painted Wooden Handle with Notches Tommy Hawk? OLD! Sorry we cant offer alot of specific history on this item. I do know its very old. Well taken care of, and passed down more generations than i can remember. It is an original authentic primitive/antique item. It has a very aged stone painted axe head, and what we mean by signed, is the fact of the painted writings in the axe head, and there are notches, at least 6, the wooden handle with the notches is around 12.5 inches long, and also has a notched ring around the upper part of the handle under the head. The head is 4.5 inches long and a half inch thick, very aged and worn til is completely smooth to the touch. The very aged wooden handle is also is smooth, dark, and so old it has almost a rubbery feel. The painted head dipicts a Tee Pee(Indian house) and backwards ... morecresent moons on one side, and maybe Tee Pee and Mountain-like figures on the other. Old super hard black stone 4/4 full grooved axe in excellent condition. Heavy patina untouched and all original. Look at the beautiful dark and light colored bands throughout the axe. Polished bit and blade. Collected by my grandfather near the historic McMahan Mound archaeological site in Sevier County. TN near the Little Pigeon River. Guaranteed to be old. The McMahan Mound Site(40SV1) Also known as McMahan Indian Mound, is an archaeological site located in Sevierville, Tennessee just above the confluence of the West Fork and the Little Pigeon Rivers in Sevier County. The site consisted of a 16 feet high and 240 feet wide platform mound. With a large associated village surrounded by a palisade. It was occupied by Dallas Phase peoples of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture between 1200 and 1500 CE. At the time it was first investigated ... morescientifically in 1881 the mound was located on a farm owned by the McMahan family for whom it is now named. Excavations by William H. Holmes in 1881 unearthed burials. Arrow-points, a marble pipe, Mississippian culture pottery, and numerous engraved shell gorgets and columnella pendants. Several items of European manufacture were found in the excavations, including brass pins and cylindrical glass beads, implying that the mound site had been inhabited during the time of European contact in the American Southeast. Up for auction is a primitive style stone axe. It is wood with a stone for a blade- that is very dull and I am not sure if it is in original condition or if it has broke. This came is a lot from a house clean out. So I don't have much info. The stone was in the box with it, but not in the axe so I am not even sure that this was the correct set up. 1800's? Native American Memorial Stone Bead Works Indian Dress Patches Sioux Axe
A very unusual piece here. Experts I have shown say it may be a Memorial stone for a relative? Parent? It consists of a pair of shoulder patches that would have come off a womans ceremonial dress. The two patches were then sewn together and placed on a small stone axe. It's about 4 inches long. Beautiful beadwork. Consistant with late 1800's to maybe 1910? Old type beads. When I got it, the patches were separating, so did put a pin underneath(can't see it) to keep them together. Also, including a nutting stone which came with it. A piece I have had on display, and always one that collectors are taken back with. Most likely Sioux. P&H is free to the lower 48 states.

Groove is about 3/4" wide. From a recent estate sale. It is my understanding that the collector found this somewhere in the Ozarks. Old super hard porphyry stone 3/4 grooved axe in excellent condition. Heavy patina untouched and all original. Look at the beautiful dark and light specks of color throughout the axe. Polished bit and blade. Collected by my grandfather near the historic McMahan Mound archaeological site in Sevier County. TN near the Little Pigeon River. Guaranteed to be old. The McMahan Mound Site(40SV1) Also known as McMahan Indian Mound, is an archaeological site located in Sevierville, Tennessee just above the confluence of the West Fork and the Little Pigeon Rivers in Sevier County. The site consisted of a 16 feet high and 240 feet wide platform mound. With a large associated village surrounded by a palisade. It was occupied by Dallas Phase peoples of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture between 1200 and 1500 CE. At the time it was first investigated ... morescientifically in 1881 the mound was located on a farm owned by the McMahan family for whom it is now named. Excavations by William H. Holmes in 1881 unearthed burials. Arrow-points, a marble pipe, Mississippian culture pottery, and numerous engraved shell gorgets and columnella pendants. Several items of European manufacture were found in the excavations, including brass pins and cylindrical glass beads, implying that the mound site had been inhabited during the time of European contact in the American Southeast. One fragmentary engraved shell gorget found during the excavations was particularly noteworthy. It depicts two S.E.C.C. Birdmen" with wings and talons for feet grasping each other by the neck with one hand and wielding ceremonial flint blades with the other. This type of gorget is carved in what is now known as the Hightower style. Holmes also uncovered several"rattlesnake" and mask style gorgets as well as a curious gorget with looping lines that Holmes described as"very interesting object.The figure is so obscure that considerable study is necessary in making it out. Here is a superb ancient 4/4 grooved stone axe in excellent condition. Michigan barbed style. Beautiful layered or banded black stone with a good heavy patina. Look at the beautiful super thin blade on this axe. I can't believe this axe survived unbroken! Perfect form. Original untouched patina. Some damage on the hammer poll end as pictured but over all an A+ axe. Excavated on the Long Island of the Holston in Kingsport. TN in 1968 by a local digger. Fresh to the market. Just a great axe!
