Ancient British Late Iron Age Celtic Stone Carving of a Human Head - 100 BC
An enigmatic late Iron Age stone head sculpture. Dating to the 1st century BC- 1st century AD. This imposing sculpture is of characteristically stylized form. Carved with a slit mouth, defined ears and hairline. The life sized head is depicted with an intense, even discordant facial expression. The intentional simplicity and earthiness of the features are hallmarks of the type. The base appears to have been modified during the Roman period as it is inscribed in the Latin Alphabet with the letters LR. Stone carved heads such as this piece are found throughout the areas of Europe once inhabited by the Celts. They are particularly prevalent in Britain and Ireland. The head was sacred to the Celts. Who believed(as many did throughout antiquity) that it housed the soul. They appear to have had huge significance in Celtic polytheistic practices, ... moreit is thought that there may even have been a cult of the human head, possibly revolving around headhunting. Certainly it is clear that the pre-Christian Celts placed an almost totemic value on severed heads. The Roman historian Diodoros Sikulos emphasised their value within Celtic warrior society, asserting that a Celt would not sell the embalmed head of his enemy for any price, claiming that he has no need of gold when he had such an obvious emblem of his courage and skill as a warrior. The heads were kept, carefully preserved in chests, and were removed to be put on display for guests in the warriors home. This reverence for the enemys severed head is much more than the mere tribal barbarism the Romans took it to be, it was obviously a ritual of both cultic and social significance. There are a multitude of theories on what stone heads such as this piece are meant to represent. Though one leading theory is that they depict dieties from the Celtic Pantheon. Vintage Oriental Belt Hook 1/2 Dragon 1/2 Man - Brown Jade - Stone - Age Unknown
This is for a Chinese or Japanese hand carved 1/2 dragon- 1/2 man- belt hook- for a sword scabbard made from brown jade or hardstone. Scarce accoutrement for a general or similar military man of high rank. These were made to hook the leather straps that went across the body from over the shoulder and affixed the sword scabbard at their side. Used in overseeing a battle as well as in ritual, their frontal wearing separated high ranking officers from the lower ones. I don't know much about when it was made or who made it but I can't find any thing like it any where. I can find plenty of belt hooks and scabbard hooks but none that I have seen are a combination between a man and a dragon. I don't know if that means something in the culture or not. Retouch: terrific endscraper on distal end of a huge wide blade or elongated flake. The endscraper has a wonderful retouch along ¾ of the left edge and the very convex tip. The right edge also has a continous retouch. Interrupted by the large notch on the interior side which looks like an use-scar, although, it has a very fine retouch at it’s edge. The proximal end is a genuine old break with a deep splintered use-scar at it’s center, proof that the tool was used after this break happened. Quina Mousterian. Dating: approx. 75.000 to 65.000 B.C. Isotope stage 4, the first cold maximum of the last glaciation in Europe, where climatic conditions were harsh and extremely cold. Description: Size: length 5.5 cm, weight 34 grams, Shape. Retouch: an excellent convex Quina scraper on elongated Clacton flake with interior platform angle greater than 105 degrees. The scraper edge(right) has a great steep stepped Quina retouch. Steepest at the medial part, which has an angle to the interior side of more than 90 degrees(see picture 4, interior side of the scraper edge) Distal end has some lateral retouch as well, and few splintered traces of use on the ... moreinterior side. Very interesting is the left lateral edge with a retouch looking like platform preparation, but it is no, platform and point of percussion are at the bottom of the tool. Raw-material: bright grey patinated flint. Preservation: very well: two tiny flat recent nicks at the distal end/ interior side. They in no way detract from value and beauty of this gorgeous scraper. Additional Information. Literature: Some characteristics of the Quina Mousterian industry: only little Levallois technique was used. But Clacton flakes were preferred, no handaxes were found in the assemblages, a very high percentage of scrapers with lateral, double, convergent, transverse as most common ones, and sometimes small very thin scrapers with a very fine stepped retouch. Preferred retouch was the stepped/ or Quina retouch, made with hard strikes first which produced broad, irregular flake negatives and secondary refining retouches directly at the edges in a second step. EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description Outstanding Middle Paleolithic( Paleolithic) stone artifact of the Homo Neanderthalensis- the Neanderthal( Neandertal) men from the Mousterian phase about 40.000- 60.000 years ago. It is a large bifacial scraper. Disc shaped! The Mousterian industry appeared around 200.000 years ago and persisted until about 40,000 years ago, in much the same areas of Europe, the Near East and Africa where Acheulean tools appear. In Europe these tools are most closely associated with Homo neanderthalensis, but elsewhere were made by both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens. Mousterian tools required a preliminary shaping of the stone core from which the actual blade is struck off. The toolmakers either shaped a rock into a rounded surface before striking off the raised area as a ... morewedge shaped flake(see photo at left) or they shaped the core as a long prism of stone before striking off triangular flakes from its length, like slices from a baguette. Because Mousterian tools were conceived as refinements on a few distinct core shapes, the whole process of making tools had standardized into explicit stages(basic core stone, rough blank, refined final tool) Variations in tool shapes could be produced by changes in the procedures at any stage. A consistent manufacturing goal was to increase as much as possible the cutting area on each blade. Though this made the toolmaking process more labor intensive, it also meant the edges of the tools could be reshaped or sharpened as they dulled, so that each tool lasted longer. PALAEOLITHIC STONE AGE'TWYDALL' CLACTONIAN TOOL Flint. 60 grams, 62.77 mm. A"Clactonian" implement or tool used for smashing and cutting up animal carcases, from the known lower palaeolithic site of"Twydall" in Kent, collected circa 1912- 1915. Old collection inscription in black: 2.SS.1235.C TWYDALL[reference by Rochester Museum] This tool shows typical clactonian style manufacture and is in a pristine state of preservation with ink inscribed museum reference number and provenance history information supplied. The flint tools of the"Clactonian" are now accepted as contemporary with the"Acheaulian" industry, two seperate tribes of"Homo Heidelbergensis" living at the same time but adopting different methods of tool production c. 400,000 y ago. THE LOWER PALAEOLITHIC IMPLEMENTS OF TWYDALL– KENT The collection was originally donated by a Mr Richard Jones of Welling in Kent to the Rochester Museum. During the period of 1912- 1915. Mr George Payne of the Kent Archaeological Society also collected along with a Mr George Baker. During the year of 1902"Sharpes Green Cement Works" was erected then the smallest cement works on record.Using second hand equipment and the last to use Static Chamber Kilns. The processing site was situated on the south shore of the river Medway near Gillingham-Kent, on an island known locally as"Horrid Hill" just off the shore. Horrid Hill so named because French prisoners of the Napolianic war who attemted to escape the"Hulks" moored on the river were hanged here for their efforts. The raw material for the manufacture of cement i.e. Chalk was extracted from a local quarry in orchard grounds belonging to a Mr Walter Stunt of Lorrendon-Faversham, Kent,a place called Twydall between Chatham and Upchurch.
