Barbarian Tides. TimeFrame 1500-600 BC. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 175 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc; 1987) ISBN: 0809464047. The Time Frame series ... morewas released in the late 80's-early 90's. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and immensely intellectually gratifying, overview though it might be. This particular volume, Time-Frame 1500-600 B.C. is sub-titled“Barbarian Tides” The material is divided into a number of subjects which will give you an idea of the rich content; and i

DESCRIPTION: HUGE hardcover in dustjacket w/magnificent color plates(199 pages) Metropolitan Museum of Art(1972) Composed in the tenth century by the poet Firdowsi. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. One commentator wrote then of Sultan Muhammad's page representing"The Court of Gayumars" the boldest painters hung their heads in shame before it" While that superb image. Reproduced within the book in color and gold, is called by Stuart Welch"perhaps the greatest painting in Iranian art: others of the pages he has selected for color reproduction and special comment are clearly in the same area of merit. EXCELLENT, 17th - 19th century Iranian Persian Safavid Islamic Stone Paste Bowl
Antique. Persian Safavid dynasty period, could be as early as 1 7th(based upon auction listings in other venues) but I believe it to be between 18th and 19th century Iranian. I enquired about a similar piece(a train wreck restored) on Rug Rabbit and the dealer wanted $2500. A deep round and footed stone paste pottery bowl with"rice grain" pierced motifs throughout these glazed translucent decorations form a six-sided star pattern when viewed from overhead. Both interior and exterior are painted with blue. Purple, some brown and black beneath a thick glossy glaze. A band of criss-cross in black bound by double lines in both blue and black around the interior rim(and exterior rim) the bowl centre has a fish and Islamic stylised tulips as its design. The exterior is also decorated with foliate palmettes and triangular banding around ... morethe bottom. Single old chip on rim. And understandable crackling in the glaze. Stunning. Measurements: Wide 21 cms( 8 3/8" Overall height 9.5 cms( 3 7/8" Depth of bowl only 8.5 cms(3 1/2"

ANTIQUE ISLAMIC PERSIAN SAFAVID MINIATURE PAINTING HUNTING SCENE TUCSON ESTATE
Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge From a Catalina Foothills estate in Tucson some years ago is this compelling 18th or possibly earlier 19th Century Islamic Persian miniature painting in color pigments and gold of what appears some sort of hunting scene. Perhaps referenced by the hand done calligraphy above and below. I say appears, because it depends on if large cats were actually once hunted with swords and spears(and using a goat as bait) The sheet was laid to a thin board backing at some point well into the long ago. This is not an area of expertise for me and these iconographic depictions are confusing to say the least. The painting is antique and I believe of the given dating…it certainly is no later than 19th Century, and could be ... morea lot earlier. Condition is reasonably good for the age with a genuine aura of time to the painted surfaces- no one would mistake this for one of the modern copies still produced by skilled artists in the region. The sheet shows some expected surface soil, with some minor old scuffing to the painting surfaces as seen in the pics; even so, colors are strong and the sheet is still well adhered to the backing. There are ancient remnants of glue to the extreme left and right edges of the backing board, well away from the sheet; framed in, these would no be visible. That said, a wonderful and splendidly executed genuine antique Safavid Persian miniature depiction. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Sheet size is about 8 1/4 in. vertical and 5 1/16 in. across; backing board is about 10 1/2 in. vertical and 7 3/8 in. across. If you collect old Islamic traditional art- especially such compelling genre depictions of upper tier life, or simply wish this single improvement to the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you Payment Terms PAYMENT WITHIN 10 DAYS OF AUCTION CLOSING. Tinned Bronze Safavid Bowl and Plate Relic
A 13% price drop has been applied to this safavid! I bought this bowl& plate at an estate sale in Baton Rouge. La. I was told by the son of the original owner that his mother bought the bowl from someone when he was young. The stand was already crushed(see picture) when it was bought. I don't know why- maybe it was dug or something of that nature? I have scoured every bit of material I can find in order to try to find out if this is a reproduction of an ancient Safavid, but I am left to believe that this is the real thing. Please, pay attention to the fact that I am NOT and expert in this particular field and you will have to let the pictures I have taken do most of the talking. If you are an expert and see that this is a reproduction, then please let me know and I will take it down immediately. With the above being said. This is ... morean awesome bowl and plate! I have seen many safavids for sale, but none of them had a matching plate! These pieces were obviously hand made and are somewhat crude. The measurements are as shown in the pictures. There are no identifying marks on the bowl or the plate. Would be a very nice addition to a serious collection! If you have any questions about these items or want me to take more pictures of something. Just let me know.

COPPER TIN Ceremonial Bowl Safavid Hand Made Antique Vintage Signed Marked
COPPER TIN Ceremonial Bowl Safavid Hand Made Antique Vintage Signed Marked Purchased this at an estate sale and they did not know much about it. It appears to be an antique/vintage bowl hand made/ stamped with copper and tinned on the inside. It appears to be of middle east origin and has maybe one or two maker's mark on the bottom. It has an inscribed"S" or looks like an S) on the side. See pictures It also may have some writing maybe with a pen on the bottom that is difficult to read. Maybe someone could tell me about this bowl. All the assessments about it in the subject above were made by looking around on the web and are just guesses. I have not had the metal checked and am unsure of origin. I do believe it is original as it was purchased an an estate sale but of course cannot know for sure. Weighs 1 lb 9 oz on postal scale. ... more7 3/4 inches across the top and 4 1/4 inches across the base rounded stand. 3 1/2" high. Feel free to ask any more questions you may have.
