Ancient Egypt: Horus/Harpocrates, Smiling God of the Sun, Roman Period
From Ancient Egypt. During the Roman period, a couple of thousand years ago, comes this beautiful ceramic fragment. I believe the subject is Harpocrates, the child Horus, god of the sun, with his Egyptian head-dress and his mysterious smile. Harpocrates became very popular all over the Roman empire as a domestic god, someone who would stick by you and help you out. Easy to see why, I think: He's made in red terra cotta. With some traces of paint still evident. Dimensions are about 2.25 inches high. Provenance is a recent French archaeological auction. Guaranteed authentic, with a strong"vibe" despite the small size. My starting price is very modest for a 2,000 year old deity. Be the first in your neighborhood to give a home to a young/old Horus! Shipping within the U.S. will be $6. Here Artist original clay sculpture is nearly ready for the foundry. Note the artist is still adding the finishing touches. Most sculptors prefer to work with clay or wax; some however. Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the ori

Where written records pertaining to diamond date back to 400 B.C. The ancient Greeks believed diamonds were tears ... moreof the gods; and it is from the Greek word adamas, untameable" or"unconquerable" referring to its hardness, that the word“diamond” is derived. The ancient Romans believed that diamonds were splinters of fallen stars. The presence of diamond in Rome is established by the writings of the Roman Historian and Naturalist, Pliny the Elder(23-79 A.D. Though this is not an exceptionally high quality diamond(and Siberia does produce some magnificent diamonds) it is nonetheless gorgeous, sparkling white diamond round which is to to casual examination eye clean. It would be very suitable for a nice ring or pendant. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The round cut is very similar to the brilliant round faceted finish given to contemporary round diamonds(a“brilliant” cut) In fact the cut could be properly called the“precursor” to the more modern finish. This is nice, white diamond with nice fire and brilliance, and no noticeable dark(carbon) inclusions. Although by contemporary stan

The Greeks and Romans are known to have worn sapphires from Ceylon, as described by writers from those times. In the ... moreworld of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Here's a gorgeous, richly colored natural cornflower blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The result was an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of fire and sparkle. It is brightly colored a regal cornflower blue, much, much lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, more along the lines of the bright blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. The gemstone is at a minimum eye clean, and at least to the unaided eye, is flawless. The color is very intense, very vibrant, a saturated rich bright blue. It has also been useful to orthopedic specialists in the treatment of bone disease and in preventing and reversing damage to RNA and DNA. And who has not heard of fluorescent lighting ... moreor fluorescent(glow in the dark” toys and light wands? Fewer will know that fluorite has also been used since ancient times as a flux to aid in the smelting of metals. But did you know that fluorite was popular for use in gemstones and gemstone carvings in ancient Egypt where it was used in the production of scarab amulets? That Pliny the Elder described the use of fluorite as a gemstone in first-century Rome. Describing as well its magical and medicinal uses? Even through Renaissance and Victorian Europe colorful fluoride gemstones were very popular in their regal purple varieties; as well as a very famous and now frightfully rare banded purple and yellow variety from England! This particular gemstone originated from one of the ancient sources of this gemstone. Bavaria, and brought to 19th century Russia where the jewelers of the Czars and of the noble and wealthy families produced the ornate jewelry of Byzantine Russia. ORIGIN: Ural Mountains. Russia. Late 19th century. SIZE: Diameter: 2mm. Depth: 1 1/4mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.11 carats(the pair) NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ancient Mediterranean cultures(Greek. Roman, Persian, Celt) believed that a garnet could give its wearer guidance in the night, allowing them to see when others could not. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, as garnet was believed to warn the wearer of approaching danger. The ancient Greeks believed it guarded children from drowning, and it was also thought to be a potent ... moreantidote against poisons. Here are two gorgeously colored bright green demantoid garnet semi-precious gemstones. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. These particular gemstones were hand cut and faceted into dazzling, sparkling gemstones of tremendous brilliance and flash. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually became known in the industry as a"brilliant cut" round, the contemporary finish generally given to round diamonds. These gemstones have every bit the flash of a diamond, and are a hundred, even a thousand times more rare. In fact demantoid garnet is one of the rarest colored gemstones in the world, and the most highly valued garnet of all. Its dispersion and reflection indexes exceed that of a diamond, which is to say that its brilliance is greater than a diamond's. In fact the name demantoid is derived from the Dutch word for diamond, demant" These are exceptionally nice quality specimens. In one of the two gemstones close scrutiny will reveal that it possesses one of the char

NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. His reign was depicted as a Golden Age of abundance ... moreand peace. A week-long solstice feast called Saturnalia is believed by scholars to be the basis of the carnival(as in Mardi-Gras) Medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms. But the stone also provided protection for those who took those journeys. Here's a gorgeous, vibrantly colored natural red sapphire precious gemstone from the Southern Ural Mountains of Siberia, Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The color is absolutely magnificent- a bright, intense, almost neon red. The color is popularly known as"padparadsha" red, and both the intense hue and the fiery sparkle are remarkable. The bezel of the ring evidences very light wear. Nothing particularly heavy, however the bands were mangled a bit due to the soil pressure exerted on the ring during the thousand years it was buried. If desired, the ring could be heated and the bands“tweaked” however generally it is better just to leave well enough alone. Though the bands are slightly misshapen, the ring“wears” quite nicely. DETAIL: This is a handsome and fairly uncommon silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself sometime between 103 and 111 A.D. It is in exceptionally good condition. With only very mild wear from circulation in ancient Rome, all of the legends and themes very clear and distinct. It was exceptionally well struck both front and back, on a generous planchet(blank) The strike was well-centered, and so caught virtually all of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. On the whole it is an exceptional specimen, the generous planchet and well-centered strike, combined with very low circulatory wear, likely placing the coin within the top ten percentile. The obverse of the coin depicts the bust of the Roman Emperor Marcus Trajan. Emperor Trajan is depicted draped with laureate crown and accompanied by the fairly complex legend“IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V PP” TRAIANO” of course refers to the Emperor’s name. There being no“J” in Roman Latin the letter“I” is used. Emperor Traja

DETAIL: This is a very handsome and fairly rare silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself in 200 A.D. The coin is in good condition. Evidencing only very light wear from circulation in ancient Rome, however there is in evidence some modest porosity(fine surface pitting consequence of being buried for millennia) on the reverse side. The flan(edge) is a bit irregular(as was typical for coins produced during this era) and the strike was just a little bit left of dead center. Nonetheless all legends and themes are quite distinct, and unlike most coins of the era, the planchet(blank coin) was generously sized, and as a result the entirety of both the legends as well as the thematic elements are present and complete. It is without a doubt a very nice strike, much better than average. The obverse of the coin depicts the head of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Depicted with laureate crown; and although a portion of the legend is missing due to the slightly undersized nature of the coin, it was originally accompanied by the legend“SEVERVS AVG PART MAX” SEVERVS” of course refers to the Emperor’s name, Lucius Septimius Severus” The suffix“AVG” was

DETAIL: This is a very handsome silver antoninianus produced in the city of Rome itself some time during the year 238 or 239 A.D. It is in exceptionally good condition. Only very light wear from circulation in ancient Rome. All legends and themes are clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back the result just a little oblong, and with a ragged flan(edge) both quite characteristic of the coinage of the era. However unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. Toward the end of the obverse legend a couple of the Latin characters are a little indistinct, but this too is quite ordinary and commonplace. The coins were of course struck by hand. And little bits of metal(detritus” would slowly clog up the finer features of the coin, especially the engraved letters, and from time to time they would have to be re-engraved. Size 4 1/4 Genuine Ancient Sculpted Diamond Shaped Engraved Roman Bronze Ring 300-400 A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Engraved Diamond Shaped Bezel. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Dacia) Fourth Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 4 1/4(U.S. Diameter: 17 1/2mm(outer diameter) 16 1/2mm* 15 1/2mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 12 1/2mm(length) 11mm(breadth) 1 1/2mm(thickness) Tapered Width Band: 7 1/2mm(at bezel) 5mm(at sides) 4mm(at back) Weight: 2.56 grams. CONDITION: Very good! Completely intact. Very light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An especially well crafted and well preserved ancient Roman bronze ring circa 300-400 A.D. As you can see. The design is simple, but elegant. The"bezel" or center part of this ring is ... morein an elegant diamond shape. The center of this diamond-shaped bezel is a raised, sculpted diamond. So you have a raised diamond center platform atop a diamond shaped bezel…and the raised sculpted diamond shaped center is bordered by a bunch dot diamond-shaped perimeter, and as well contains a punch-dot diamond within the center of the topmost platform. So you have a diamond shaped sculpted raised center platform which both contains a punch dot diamond, and is in turn within an engraved/punch dot diamond, atop a diamond shaped bezel which also is contained within a diamond punch-dot circumferential periphery. It is a handsome design, one quite popular for the era and region. There is some light“all-over” wear evident. But nothing significant enough to merit description. Nonetheless fate has been kind to this ring. The fact that the ring evidences some degree of wear from ancient usage should not, however, be a source of disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the purchaser. And without any regard to twenty-first century poste

Norton& Company Inc. 1965) ISBN: 0393003221. In this flowing(illustrated) survey of Roman intellectual development during the four centuries from Cicero to Augustine. Professor Starr seeks to define the causes for the decline of classical civilization. At the same time he points out that the Graeco-Roman culture carried unconsciously within it the forces of a new order of life. The sources of this new view, which were largely the same as the causes for the disintegration of classical culture, are here located in major social changes in the position of the individual human being, not in the outward growth of political autocracy or in the ever sharper ... moreclass stratification of the Roman Empire. Vintage Roman Style Amethyst Glass Compote
Vintage Roman style Glass Compote Beautiful Roman style Glass Compote. Made of thick very dark amethyst Glass. The Roman style Glass compote has very nice sculpting around the top.The flower seems to be what remains of some silver overlay, still looks very nice. The Roman style Glass Compote has three feet that support it, that show a lot of ware on the bottom. So I Believe the piece to be very old. In order to see that the piece is Amethyst Glass you have to place it in front of very bright light. The compote is 4.25 inches tall and 4.75 inches wide. Also it has just a couple of very small flee bits, not uncommon for a piece this old, and a mold mark across the bottom( see photo 9) very nice piece in general. Thanks for shopping.

YOUR best offer? 2 v. 1st Ed. (1974) Crawford's ROMAN REPUBLICAN COINAGE
Crawford. Michael H. Roman Republican Coinage. London: Cambridge University Press. 1974. 2 vol. 566 pp. pp. 569-919, 70 plates; key to plates, concordances, indices. A Fine set in Near Fine dustjackets of the now quite rare First Edition. With plates far superior to those in later reprints. Crawford catalogues the known issues in the period from about 300 to 31 B.C. Describing and dating each as fully and precisely as the evidence permits. He provides also an extended commentary on the production and administration of the coinage and on the political background and careers of the moneyers themselves. All the main coin types are illustrated in the plates and each one is individually discussed. The coins themselves rarely have any explicit indication of date. Mr Crawford bases his dating-scheme on a close inspection of Republican coin hoards ... moreand on a personal examination of all the major European and American collections. He has been able to improve very substantially on the work of all earlier cataloguers. Kroh 67* the recognized standard reference on this coinage. essential for the specialist. Note: this title is being relisted ONE LAST TIME at the request of those of you who asked for the opportunity to extend a counteroffer for this item.

Antique 18thC Siberia 3 1/4 Colorful Tourmaline Ancient Roman Gemstone
Antique Genuine Natural Russian Three and Two-Third Carat Antique Multi-Colored Oval Cut Tourmaline. CLASSIFICATION: Tourmaline Oval Cabochon. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: 9mm. Width: 8mm. Depth: 5mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 3.66 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: You’ll likely never. Ever see a gemstone as unique as this. A very large multi-colored tourmaline gemstone from Siberia, the Ural Mountains of Russia. Gorgeous, vibrant, and brightly hued, this striking gemstone possesses breathtaking luster and delicate hue. This huge gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cut cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a rich and velvety ... morecharacter. It is a nice quality tourmaline by 19th century standards. The gemstone would be more or less transparent except for the fact that it is so thick. Given the thick cut, it is more toward translucent than transparent. By today’s standards it is not a high quality tourmaline– though its size makes it nonetheless extraordinary. But by 19th century standards, this was a very desirable and expensive gemstone. To casual observation if seems simply a very large, beautiful, quite extraordinarily colored tourmaline. But of course very close scrutiny, especially under high magnification, will reveal lots of sins. Keep in mind however that these images here are at 300% And every little blemish is going to appear absolutely huge. In hand to the casual view these blemishes simply are too small to attract much attention. If we were less forthcoming, it would be advantageous to simply show“life size” images. But we’d rather you see the good, the bad, and the ugly. By today’s standards it is not a high quality tourmaline– though its size makes it nonetheless extraordinary. But by 19th century standards, this was a very desirable and expensive gemstone. Even today there
Greek Roman Gold Jewelry Magnificent 68 Color Plate
Greek and Roman Jewellery(68 Plates in Full Colour) by Filippo Coarelli. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover w/dustjacket(157 pages- 68 full color plates) Hamlyn/Cameo(1970) The history and jewelry wearing customs of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Sixty-Eight incredible color plates of ancient Greek and Roman Jewelry. Coffee Table Quality Reference(albeit small 8½*5½ inches) A fabulous reference! You’ll be thankful 100 times to have this book at your fingertips. The history and customs described are fascinating. The color pictures stunning. CONDITION: Hardcover w/dustjacket. Lightly browsed hardcover w/dustjacket. Pages are pristine; unblemished. Clean, crisp, unmutilated, bound very tightly, and unmarked. The book appears to have only been flipped through once or twice, and is"like new" except the top surface of closed page edges ... moreis slightly tanned and freckled(dust dinge/age spotting) however this is not only very faint, but also visible only when the pages are closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) Otherwise exceptionally clean and exceptionally good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. This is a wonderful. High quality book originally produced in the U.K. and Italy in English for distribution world wide. The full color plates are simply magnificent, and the images are of the most fabulous gold jewelry ever produced and uncovered from ancient Greece and Rome. It is a wonderful reference for those interested in the history of jewelry, and wonderful pictures for whose who just want to admire the incredible gold jewelry of these grand empires. There are pictures of many pieces which I have never seen before, except in pricey museum catalogs. Still a wonderful reference despite being produced in 1966, it is divided into five sections: The Geometric and Orientalising Periods; Archaic Greece and Etruria; The Classical Period; The Hellenistic Period; and The Roman Period. What is really exceptional is that rather than terse descriptions of je
Antique 19thC ½ct Sapphire Ancient Greek Roman Sorcery Sterling Ring
Antique Handcrafted Genuine Natural Russian Cornflower Blue Sapphire Faceted Round Contemporary High Quality Sterling Silver Ring(Size 7– Resizing Available) CLASSIFICATION: Faceted Blue Sapphire Round. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 19th Century. SIZE: Diameter: 5mm. Depth: 2mm. All measurements approximate WEIGHT: Approximately 0.51 carats. NOTES: Resizing is available. 14kt solid gold setting is also available. DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks. Romans, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here’s ... morea gorgeous, vibrantly colored natural bright blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The setting is of contemporary origin. It is a high quality setting manufactured by one of the USA’s leading semi-custom mount producers. It is constructed of solid sterling silver. We do have the ability to have the ring sent out for resizing if requested. Additionally. If preferred, the mounting is also available in 14kt solid gold. The color possessed by the gemstone is a very beautiful blue, the color very reminiscent of the shade often called“cornflower” blue after the fabulous Kashmiri sapphires(from Kashmir, India) which played out in the nineteenth century. The color is quite exquisite, and well-saturated(not washed out) There might be just barely detectable a little color zoning, which means that if you look very carefully and closely under magnification you might see slightly different shades of color within the gemstones. Silver Roman Emperor Elagabalus Sun God El-Gabal AD221

REVERSE DEPICTION: Elagablus in toga and with horn growing out of forehead holding a patera sacrificing over an altar. Bull at his feet, holding a cypress branch in his other hand, star in the foreground. ATTRIBUTION: Probably Stuck in Rome in 221 A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 19 x 18 millimeters. Weight: 2.55 grams. NOTE: Coin is mounted free of charge into your choice of pendant settings(shown in sterling silver pendant) And includes a sterling silver chain in your choice ... moreof 16" 18" or 20" length, details below or click) We can reverse coin in mounting if you prefer opposite side showing front. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. And fairly rare silver antoninianus, struck at the city of Rome in 221 A.D. It is in very good condition relative to the state it“began life” in. What that means is that there is relatively little wear evident from circulation in ancient Rome. The coin is in much the same condition it was in when it was struck eighteen centuries ago. One can inspect the portrait of the emperor to appreciate just how fine the condition is, and how relatively little circulatory wear is evidence. It was well struck both front and back, the strike somewhat off center, the planchet(coin blank) slightly oblong. Nonetheless unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught most of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The coin was struck a bit off-center. The obverse a little bit low and too far right, the reverse just a little bit low and left of center. That coupled with the slightly irregular flan(coin edge) results in some of the legend on both obverse and

Minted between 19-2 BC MINT: Colonia Patricia(Spain) OBVERSE; PERM CAES AVG-Bare head right. REVERSE; COLONIA PATRICIA- Two lines within wreath. Augustus 27 BC- 14 AD Originally called Octavian. His name is today known simply as Augustus which was the title given him by the Senate in the year 27 B.C. He was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar and was following an illustrious military career when Caesar was murdered. On hearing of this he set in motion a series of alliances meant to avenge his great-uncle's assassins. He recruited Lepidus and Marc Antony for the task, defeated Brutus and his co-conspirators and then carved up the Roman world among the three. Lepidus was thus left ... morein control of the African provinces, Marc Antony with Egypt and the eastern provinces and Octavian the rest including Rome itself. The Triumvirate as it was called was unstable and they each began to plot against the other. Within a few years however Lepidus would be stripped of his powers and Marc Antony would be defeated in a major battle. Antony and his wife Cleopatra then committed suicide leaving Octavian as sole emperor. Octavian then became known and referred to by his title and went on to rule the Roman Empire for another 40 years. He did this while cooperating with the Senate and to him Romans owed much of the grandeur and influence that this empire became known for.
