Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 192 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1970) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) t

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Myths of the Norsemen From the ... moreEddas and Sagas by H.A. Guerber. With 64 Illustrations. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 396 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications; 1992) ISBN: 0486273482. From his exalted throne. A mighty watchtower, Odin surveys the world; a world of gods, giants, elves, dwarves, and men. Below, the Valkyrs ride forth, their golden hair streaming through the clouds, the pale northern sun glinting on shields and spears. Through the battlefields they swoop, bringing the kiss of death to the warriors bound for Valhalla, hall of the chosen slain. The myths of the Norsemen are darkly romantic. Heroic and tragic. For sheer adventure and high drama, they are without equal. Their sagas are stirring tales that are as powerful now as they were a thousand years ago. But less well known are the stories themselves, stories with all the classic qualities of a long-lost age. Valor, nobility, and a triumphant greatness of spirit. These were the human attributes the medieval Norsemen admired most. What dazzling inspiration for young Viking warriors these tales must have been, vividly told beside blazing fires on dark and frozen nights. Their preservation. From the oral tradition to the prose sagas that have come down to us, owes much to the Norse colonization of Iceland. Here the art of storytelling lived on, vivid, dramatic, and realistic. The stories feature well-defined characters, colorfully portrayed. For deeply imbued with the values of the Norsemen though they were, the intention was entertainment, the emphasis on action and pace. And on these northerly shores, the sweep of Christianity across Europe was delayed long enough to allow learned men, proud of their pagan past, to adapt the art of storytelling to the written word. During the early part of the thirteenth century. The“Eddas” were collected together, masterpieces of Norse mythology that included the tragic death of Balder; the comic ta

Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

He was the most prominent of the military gods that were worshipped by the Roman legions. The martial Romans considered him second in importance only to Jupiter(their main god) His festivals were held in March(named for him) and October. As the word Mars has no Indo-European derivation. It is most ... morelikely the Latinised form of the agricultural Etruscan god Maris. Initially Mars was a Roman god of fertility and vegetation and a protector of cattle. Fields and boundaries and farmers. In the second century BC, the conservative Cato the Elder advised"For your cattle. For them to be healthy, make this sacrifice to Mars Silvanus you must make this sacrifice each year" Mars later became associated with battle as the growing Roman Empire began to expand. And he came to be identified with the Greek god Ares. Unlike his Greek counterpart. Mars was generally revered and rivaled Jupiter as the most honoured god. It had a composite prod and was spanned by bracing the front end of the weapon against the ground while placing the end of a slider mechanism against the stomach. It was claimed, could be operated by a person of average strength but which had a power that allowed it to be successfully used against armoured troops. The oxybeles was a bigger and heavier construction employing a winch, and was mounted on a tripod. It had a lower rate of fire and was used as a siege engine. With the invention of bundle technology. The first ballista was built. The advantage of this new technology was the fast relaxation time of this system. Thus it was possible to shoot lighter projectiles with higher velocities over a longer distance. For an oxybeles. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Julian the Apostate or Julian the Philosopher(331/332– 26 June 363. Greek: Ιουλιανός) Was Roman Emperor( Caesar. November 355 to February 360; Augustus, February 360 to June 363) last of the Constantinian dynasty. Julian was a man of"unusually complex character" he was"the military commander. The theosophist, the social reformer, and the man of letters" Julian was the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire and it was his desire to bring the empire back to its ancient Roman values in order to save it from"dissolution" He purged the top-heavy state bureaucracy and attempted to revive traditional Roman religious practices at the cost of Christianity. His rejection of Christianity in favour of Neo- Platonic paganism caused him to be called Julian the Apostate by the church. As Edward Gibbon wrote: In 363. These came from a Numismatist who has accumulated from various collectors’ estates and continues to buy collections and travel to shows. Many have collected for 20-50 years as it is a lifelong hobby. Most grading has usually but not always been done by me to the best of my ability as a collector for over 30 years. There is a lot of subjectivity when it comes to grading so please. Evaluate the coins yourself. Condition is as shown in the photos. The photos are usually scans and some coins do not scan well because of their reflective nature or the type of metal they are composed of. Please, examine photos carefully.
