The ring was not actually recovered with the original gemstone intact. A number of different types of adhesives were used in the ancient and medieval worlds, including commonly(for jewelry) with resin or bitumen. Such adhesives generally failed sooner or later, especially when exposed to the rigors of ordinary daily life.
