19th C. Intaglio Set In Modern Hand Made 14K Ring, Socrates, Greco Roman Style
Offered for sale is a hand engraved 19 th century carnelian agate intaglio depicting the bust of a balding man in Greco-Roman style. Set in a modern solid 14K yellow gold ring. This intaglio ring is in the classical and neo-classical tradition of rings worn by individuals that had engraved images of the great or famous. That were admired or emulated by the rings wearer. This type ring also served as a personal, one of a kind, seal for its wearer. The intaglio is probably meant to be an idealized portrait of a Greek or Roman philosopher. In my opinion. After comparing it to other intaglios in several books on engraved gems, it is meant as a portrait of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. The portrait has the snub nose and bald head that is attributed to Socrates. The intaglio is finely engraved with individuality and may well be a copy ... moreof an ancient intaglio. It is also in excellent condition with no crack or chips. Please note that it does have two internal color flaws that show as dark spots within the carnelian agate. These natural flaws do not compromise the integrity of the stone and are barely noticeable when the ring is worn(Please see pictures) The intaglio set in this ring measures approximately 19mm by 16.75mm and the bezel framing it measures approximately 23.4mm by 21.2mm. This ring weighs approximately 9.9 grams and is hand made in the ancient“stirrup” style. But when this ring is worn out in the sunlight, the light plays across every single line which really makes it shimmer. There is almost no fading to the decorations even though this ring was probably worn by the same man for many years and would have been a much valued possession. We can tell this by the wear patterns on the band. To one side where there was probably a casting flaw the ring was worn thinner than the other side but remains fully intact. This ring is an excellent example of the period's craft. The ring is VERY MASCULINE and will be a highly noticeable wardrobe addition.
