The"bezel" or center part ... moreof this ring is a very elegant teardrop shape, probably intended to be in the shape of an ivy leaf. The bezel itself is decorated with a zig-zag pattern which is probably nothing more than an abstract geometric pattern, which was a quite popular theme in late Imperial Rome. The engraving does bear a resemblance to a Roman depiction of a lightening bolt, which was shield(scutum) emblem used by a number of Roman Legions, including the infamous Tenth. The tenth, which fought for Julius Caesar, also was used to put down the revolt in Judea. However as much as the engraving looks like a lightening bolt to contemporary eyes, the Roman depiction of a lightening bolt was stylistically a little bit different. So this is probably merely a pleasing geometric design, quite handsome nonetheless. The construction of the ring is of the more archaic style where the bands and bezel are crafted separately and then attached. The workmanship is quite competent however– it is very difficult to ascertain that the bands and bezel are not of one-piece construction. Despite the archaic style. This depiction is not even very fearsome, intimidating, or awe-inspiring at all. It seems a rather amateurish depiction, a simplification with little detail(not much more than an outline) perhaps done by someone not very familiar with what a Roman Legionary eagle was supposed to look like, as it looks rather more like a chicken than an eagle. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even if the depiction does not strike fear into the heart of the beholder(but rather amusement) it is still a wonderful depiction, even if quite atypical. The ring was not actually recovered with the gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz, orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” The ring is of simple but durable construction, simple bronze bands brazed onto an ordinary, cup” style bezel with a serrated periphery. The bezel of the ring evidences very light wear. Nothing particularly heavy, however the bands were mangled a bit due to the soil pressure exerted on the ring during the thousand years it was buried. If desired, the ring could be heated and the bands“tweaked” however generally it is better just to leave well enough alone. Though the bands are slightly misshapen, the ring“wears” quite nicely.
