NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 239 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts a

The Book of Lilith by Barbara Black Koltuv. Ph.D. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 127 pages. Publisher: Nicolas Hays(1986) ISBN: 9780892540143. The Book of Lilith tells the story of Lilith. Who was really the first woman created by God, and who just happened to have been created before Adam. Her job is to give all the things in the world souls, while Adam's is to create rules and law out of chaos. Unfortunately, Adam likes to have sex with Lilith only in the Adam-on-top position. This leads to, shall we say, problems" The Book of Lilith is alternately funny, serious, surreal, and amazing as Lilith embarks on a Zen journey around the world giving things souls and giving birth to a god. It is more than a little bit deep, and yet very, very entertaining. Lilith’s demonic origins are found in Jewish folklore, her name and personality ultimately derived from a Babylonian-Assyrian demon named Lilit, or Lilu, though Lilith may have had an association with even earlier goddesses. In rabbinic literature Lilith is variously depicted as the mother of Adam’s demonic offspring following his separation from Eve, or as his first wife, who scoffed at him and left him because he insisted on the male-superior sexual position, the so-called“missionary” position. Three angels tried in vain to force her to return to Adam. Ultimately the more docile Eve was created for Adam as a replacement for Lilith. Refusing to couple with Adam. Lilith was said to have bred with demons, producing 100 offspring a day. Lilith appears in J.W. von Goethe’s“Faust” and Dante Gabriel Rosetti’s“Eden Bower” In the twentieth century, Lilith became something of a feminist symbol for her rebellion against patriarchal ways. museal restored samian ware plate with pottery stamp roman ca. 100-300AD
The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic. Which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but reached its zenith under Emperor Trajan. At this territorial peak, the Roman Empire controlled ... moreapproximately 6.5 million km² of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. ROMAN TERRA RUBRA SHARDS with decoration pottery ceramics Romain Romano Römisch
Roman pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. Ancient Roman Pottery Oil Lamp Of The Goddess Victory - 75 AD
An ancient Roman glazed terracotta oil lamp. Depicting the goddess Victory and dating to 75– 200 AD. The lamp of classic form. With a beautiful dark ochre slip and volute nozzle. The moulded decoration on the tondo depicts Victory standing resolutely, holding her shield in the right hand and an olive branch in the left. The face is statuesque, even severe, yet the scene is far from static, her great wings stretch out behind, whilst the folds of her long garment flutter carelessly in the wind. A truly beautiful example, there is an artistic skill about this depiction that is not often encountered on Roman oil lamps. Lamps such as this were filled with olive oil and lit with a thick wick which protruded from the nozzle end. Their flickering. Muted light was ubiquitous in the dark nights of ancient times. ancient pottery wine pitcher Greek ? Roman ? antique old primative jug vintage
This came out of an old Camden maine estate here in Maine. Very old piece of pottery. My guess is European maybe Greek. From other examples I have seen probably a wine pitcher. I am no expert in this field. You can see the years of ware at the spout top and bottom. Could be Roman I dont know. What you see is what you get. Piece stands 7" high with about a 5" diameter at large point. No cracks still holds water. Wear around spout as shown in pictures.

COLE POTTERY SANFORD NC 14+ INCH TURQUOISE ROMAN PITCHER
Arthur Ray(AR) Cole(1892-1874) operated his first pottery shop in 1926 in Steeds. NC near Seagrove, NC. He moved his shop to Sanford NC in the early 1930's where his shop became the primary provider of pottery for Maurice Leverette's Rainbow Pottery(1934-1941) In 1942 he discontinued work for Rainbow Pottery and opened his own shop, AR Cole Pottery, in Sanford. The Cole family is among the most prominent in North Carolina pottery history and are among the pioneers of the North Carolina art pottery movement. AR Cole was the son of potter Ruffin Cole and the nephew of potters Wrenn Cole and JB Cole. One of his brothers was CC Cole. As a family the Coles are recognized for their unique and artistic forms and interesting glazes. When he opened AR Cole Pottery in 1941 his daughters, Neolia Cole(1927- and Celia Cole(1924- worked with him. ... moreHis son, G.F. Cole(1919-1991) and potters such as Jack Kiser and Elvin Owen worked with him periodically. Neolia, her sister Celia, and her grandson Kenneth George(b. 1970) continued to operate as Cole Pottery, Sanford, NC in the tradition of AR Cole until about 2 years ago. Sadly, the pottery is now closed. Offered for sale from my personal collection is the classic Cole Pottery Roman pitcher made by Kenneth George. AR Cole's great grandson. It has a terrific handle on it. It is 14 1/2 inches tall to the top of the handle and 7 inches at its widest point. It has no cracks, chips or repairs. It is a good example of the Cole pottery's popular turquoise glaze. It is clean, unused, like new, with a circular Cole Pottery incised mark on the bottom. It is hand signed, Kenneth George 2-15-2002 Sanford N.C. Shipment by Priority Mail. It is a large pitcher that weighs 4 1/2 pounds. It will require double boxing and in an oversided box. Local pickup is an option. Insurance is included in the handling fee. This is handmade pottery and I provide multiple photos for your review. Please email any questions before bidding as returns are accepted for a gross error in description only

Excuisite Ancient Greek/Roman Terracotta Pottery Oil Lamp 5-7th Century AD
This is a Magnificent ancient Greek terracotta oil lamp from the countryside near Thessaloniki. Greece. It is made of grey clay. Such lamps were daily household items from the iron age through the late medieval period, and the numerous examples we have from the archaeological record allow us to accurately date them based on their stylistic attributes. This one dates from the 5th to the 7th century AD. These lamps were mass produced in two piece clay molds and the fingerprints of the ancient potter can often be seen inside. Age: 5th- 7th Century AD• Culture: Greek• Size: 4 Inches• Provenance: This lamp was brought to the USA from Greece in the 1960's and was in a private American collection until I purchased it in 2011 I studied Archaeology at Yale University and have conducted archaeological excavations in North and South America and ... morein the Near East. I have been a collector for many years and am now selling some of my vast collection to make space for new artifacts and more importantly to share these treasures. That have given me such joy, with other serious collectors. It is essential to retain as much information as possible with the transfer of an artifact and I will try to provide as complete a provenance as possible. I want you to be happy with your purchase so please contact me immediately if for any reason you are not satisfied. I accept return for 14 days after purchase.
