The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity by Carsten Peter Thiede. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 256 pages. Publisher: Palgrave ... morefor St. Martin’s Press; 2001) Carsten Peter Thiede’s bestseller. Eyewitness to Jesus” written with journalist Matthew d’Ancona, established him as one of the leading figures on the history and texts of the first century. Now in this controversial new book, Thiede focuses on what are perhaps the most enigmatic ancient documents ever found; the Dead Sea Scrolls. Drawing upon his own pioneering methods in restoring the scrolls, Thiede reveals that the Essene Library represented by the scrolls demonstrates that the first Christians were essentially a Jewish movement, not a radically new and fundamentally different religion. This perspective clearly has major implications. It affects both how we view the scrolls and it changes how we consider the history of first-century Christianity. Unraveling the complete history of the scrolls since their discovery in 1947. Thiede places them in the context of what has previously been unknown about the Essene community at Qumram. His identification of scroll fragments from Mark’s Gospel and Paul’s first letter to Timothy indicates that such Jewish-Christian writings were written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Moreover. It also suggests that the Essene community viewed the early Christians as fellow Jews, whose provocative ideas about the true Messiah they wanted to scrutinize. Eye-opening and stimulating, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity” reveals for the first time the fruits of much painstaking and original research. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Since their discoveries in 1947. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Peoples of the Past: Babylonians ... moreby H.W.F. Saggs. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C. The Age Of God-Kings TimeFrame 3000-1500 BC. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 176 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc; 1987) ISBN: 0809464004. The Time Frame ... moreseries was released in the late 80's-early 90's. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and immensely intellectually gratifying, overview though it might be. This particular volume, Time-Frame 3000-1500 B.C. is sub-titled“The Age of the God Kings” The material is divided into a number of subjects which will give you an idea of the rich

Vintage Roman Boy Planter Statue 12" Tall Art Pottery
Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Offered is a lovely pedestal planter featuring a Romanesque boy hugging a column and holding an urn or large bowl. Made by Haeger. The bottom is marked with a blue stamp, which indicates it may have been made around the 1940's. The planter is about 12" tall and it is ivory in color. It mesures about 8" wide. There are no chips. Cracks or signs of crazing. However, the bottom of the piece has three unglazed spots where the actual pottery is showing through. I'm not sure how it happened, none the less, it's a unique and lovely piece of vintage Haeger. It would look wonderful with some green foilage flowing from the bowl. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION! AR COLE POTTERY CRYSTAL GREEN GLAZED STUNNING ROMAN PITCHER 1940'S-1950's NICE!
Arthur Ray(AR) Cole(1892-1874) operated his first pottery shop in 1926 in Steeds. NC near Seagrove, NC. He moved his shop to Sanford NC in the early 1930's where his shop became the primary provider of pottery for Maurice Leverette's Rainbow Pottery(1934-1941) In 1942 he discontinued the contract work for Rainbow Pottery and worked as AR Cole Pottery, in Sanford. The Cole family is among the most prominent in North Carolina pottery history and are among the pioneers of the North Carolina art pottery movement. AR Cole was the son of potter Ruffin Cole and the nephew of potters Wrenn Cole and JB Cole. One of his brothers was CC Cole. As a family the Coles are recognized for their unique and artistic forms and interesting glazes. Offered for sale from my personal collection is a beautiful example of the classic Roman pitcher form for ... morewhich AR Cole Pottery is known in crystal green rutile glaze. This is an unusual example of this glaze both in depth and extent of the green color and the limited rutile accents. The glaze overall is glossy and reflects the surroundings in the photos. The last 3 photos of the body of the pitcher were taken with a flash so that the detail of the glaze shows more clearly but the color is slightly off. The handle is remarkably well formed. It is in excellent from the kiln condition with no cracks chips. Or repairs. It is 12 inches tall to the top of the handle. It is marked with the early stamp, a catalog number(151) and dates from the 1940's- 1950's. Shipment by Priority Mail. Insurance is included in the handling fee. This is handmade pottery and I provide multiple photos for your review. Please email any questions before bidding as returns are accepted for a gross error in description only.

Ancient Egyptian / Roman Pottery Harpocrates Figure - 20 AD
An ancient Egyptian Roman period terracotta figure of Harpocrates. God of silence, dating to 20– 200 AD. A very fine example of Romano-Egyptian pottery art. In excellent condition and showing a particularly interesting theme. Shown on horseback. Harpocrates wears both the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt and raises his finger to his lips in the classic gesture. The horse raises its front leg with controlled vigour, it almost has the appearance of a dressage display. This curious deity had truly ancient origins and reflects the multicultural nature of Ptolemaic Egyptian society. Harpocrates was essentially the Hellenised form of the Egyptian child god Horus. Who was often shown raising his finger to his lips. Though perhaps the Greeks and later Romans did not understand mysteries of Egyptian religion as well as they thought, as the finger to ... morethe lips in ancient Egypt was actually the hieroglyph for “child”– a symbol they misinterpreted as silence. As such this fascinating deity reflects how the turns of history can sometimes be powered by the most unlikely of events, in this case a simple mistake. Height: 6 ¾ inches. Condition: Good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Reading, Berkshire. Acquired 1980’s. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold. UNUSUAL Ancient - EGYPTIAN ROMAN Antique POTTERY FROG EFFIGY VASE - SNAKE HANDLE
This is a beautiful and unusual antique vase. Which I believe is Middle Easton. Possibly Egyptian. This came from the estate of a elderly couple who were world travelers. They purchased this at a antique shop in Europe. I am not sure of its age, but just from the look of the patina, I strongly believe it has great age. There is normal spot paint and age wear, but over all this is in wonderful condition. With No cracks and I show many photographs of all sides. So please view all the photographs On each side of the face is a large raised"Frog Effigy" design, and each handle is in the form of a snake. Roman North African Redware Pottery Fragment 350-420AD Abraham Sacrificing Isaac
A pair of Roman Red-ware sherds with Abraham sacrificing Isaac. North Africa, c. 5th Century AD From Genesis 22- Abraham is bearded and wears a workingman's short tunic with one shoulder uncovered(an exomis) He wields a double-edged sword with studded pommel. On hearing the angel's command.he turns his head upward. While he still holds Isaac's head over the altar with his left hand.Isaac, wearing a short tunic and with his hands tied behind his back, is bent over an altar. The hand of his father holds down the boys head preparatory to delivering a fatal stroke with his sword. Augustine used this story to share God's provision and deliverance. Light from the Age of Augustine p. 34-35) Ref: Solomonson 1969 Abb 76 pp. 23-29; 58; Light from the Age of Augustine pp. 34-35. Nos. 22-23. African red-ware Pottery provides some of the ... moreoldest motifs and portraits of Biblical characters. This pottery was influenced by the teaching of Saint Augustine of Hippo during the 4th and 5th century(AD 350-420) after the political conversion of the Roman by Emperor Constantine(AD 307-337) Constantine's conversion of the Empire from paganism to Christianity permitted for the inauguration of Christian motifs on public artwork. Many of Augustine's teachings. Hopes, and allegorical hermeneutics are portrayed throughout these Christian images. Though pagan worship and cultic practice were eventually banned by the imperial administration, many classical artwork themes of the pagans continued from the past Roman world as the clash between paganism and Christianity struggled to cohabitate. It is evident that these themes made their way into the new art of these Biblical characters. Some biblical characters on African red-ware are portrayed with the classical look of the roman gods among other forms of the continued pagan artistic tradition. African red-ware pottery provides us with an amazing window into the 4th and 5th century Christian world as influenced under the teachings of Augustine. Guaranteed Authentic. Shippin

I think he was musician from Greek period it seems to have a pretty good drawing depicting a man who wear green with his four strings kithara and wine. Dia = 6.5 Inch(16.5 cm) this Greek Plate The cithara or kithara was an ancient Greek musical instrument in the lyre or lyra family. In modern Greek the word kithara has come to mean"guitar" a word whose origins are found in kithara) The kithara was a professional version of the two-stringed lyre. As opposed to the simpler lyre. Which was a folk-instrument, the kithara was primarily used by professional musicians, called kitharodes. The barbiton was a bass version of the kithara popular in the eastern Aegean and ancient Asia Minor The kithara had ... morea deep. Wooden sounding box composed of two resonating tables, either flat or slightly arched, connected by ribs or sides of equal width. At the top, its strings were knotted around the crossbar or yoke(zugon) or to rings threaded over the bar. Or wound around pegs. The other end of the strings was secured to a tail-piece after passing over a flat bridge, or the tail-piece and bridge were combined. Most vase paintings show kitharas with seven strings, in agreement with ancient authors, but these also mention that occasionally a skillful kitharode would use more than the conventional seven strings. It was played with a rigid plectrum(or more modernly called pick) held in the right hand. With elbow outstretched and palm bent inwards, while the strings with undesired notes were damped with the straightened fingers of the left hand. Ancient Greek Pottery Plate circa 300 Bc.
