3 Ancient Pottery Oil Lamps, Late Roman and Early Islamic 400-750 AD
Three Pottery Oil Lamps. Late Roman and Early Islamic CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Roman Syria. Early Islamic Palestine DATE: Circa 400- 750 AD DIMENSIONS: 10.1 cm(3.97 in. long for the largest(late Roman) example DESCRIPTION: First in this group is a late Roman type from Syria. Formed of buff clay fired pink with traces of a brick red slip. The upper surfaces are decorated with long stylized palm or vine scrolls and a single circle set between the fill and wick holes. The high pointed handle has a single deep channel running down its center. The underside is flat and decorated with rows of simple repeating punch marks and parallel lines. Intact and free of encrustation. The other two lamps are small examples of a widespread type marking the Byzantine- Islamic transitional decades. Both have a spike handle and double ridge around the fill ... morehole and rest on a slightly raised circular base. One is decorated with radiating vertical strokes while the other is decorated with palm leaf and concentric semi-circle designs. While probably produced during the early decades of Islamic(Ummayad Dynasty) rule, they were no doubt used in Christian contexts. Both intact but for minor surface chips, with soot stains from use. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection. Assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner. COMPARISONS: For the late Roman example. See the RomQ Reference Collection online, Reference BSP9 for a very similar example. Set of Ancient Holy Land Greek Roman Jugs & Oil Lamp Terracotta Pottery Clay Rep
Beautiful& rare Set of Biblical Wine Jugs& Oil Lamp Jerusalem Holy Land Antique pottery Clay Roman Herodia n embossed with the Symbols of Star of David& Menorah Replica. Estimated time line: Judea from 37BC to 70AD and beyond. A wonderful piece of History! Star of David symbol meaning: The Star of David. Known in Hebrew as the Shield of David or Magen David in Hebrew, is a generally recognized symbol of modern Jewish identity and Judaism. Its shape is that of a hexagram, the compound of two equilateral triangles. Unlike the menorah, the Lion of Judah. The shofar and the lulav, the Star of David was never a uniquely Jewish symbol. During the 19th century the symbol began to proliferate amongst the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe. Ultimately being used amongst the Jewish communities in the Pale of Settlement. A significant ... moremotivating factor was the desire to imitate the influence of the Christian cross. The earliest Jewish usage of the symbol was inherited from medieval Arabic literature by Kabbalists for use in talismanic protective amulets(segulot) where it was known as a Seal of Solomon. The symbol was also used in Christian churches as a decorative motif many centuries before its first known use in a Jewish synagogue. Prior to the 19th century. Official use in Jewish communities was generally known only in the region of today's Czech Republic. Austria and possibly parts of Southern Germany. Having begun in medieval Prague. The symbol became representative of the worldwide Zionist community. And later the broader Jewish community, after it was chosen as the central symbol on a flag at the First Zionist Congress in 1897. The identification of the term"Star of David" or"Shield of David" with the hexagram shape dates to the 17th century. The term"Shield of David" is also used in the Siddur(Jewish prayer book) as a title of the God of Israel. Ancient Roman Terracotta pottery Amphora fragment
Up for auction is an ancient piece of Roman pottery. It looks like the upper portion of an Amphora. This came out of a collection in which I was told that it was from the area of northern Italy near Aquileia. Aquileia was attacked in 452 by Attila and destroyed. This Amphora fragment shows signs of marine life and makes a very decorative artifact. Please look at photos before bidding. this item measures about 5 inches high and about 8 inches wide. A very nice relic.
