CLASSIFICATION: Roman/Moesian Terra Cotta Oil Lamp of Very Basic and Simple Style. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia(Present-Day Bulgaria) First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

The Buried People: A Study of the Etruscan World by Sibylle von Cles-Reden. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 248 pages. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. 2 Pottery Barn Kids Green Gingham roman shades and 1 panel
These are 36x64 roman shades. They do have some fading on the back, I am adding 1 42"x 82" panel to be used as extra fabric because one of the ties is missing( there are 7 of the 8 here) When hung these look very good, fading is only noticeable when they are taken down. Panel has plenty of fabric for pillows, crib skirt or valances. Posted with

Ancient Roman bottom of a mug and other pottery shards Romano Romain Römisch
Roman pottery shards found in the Netherlands. Vechten, former castellum Fectio. Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it ... morewas the site of one of the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. Check out my! ROMAN TERRA SIGILLATA SHARDS RED WARE pottery ceramics Romain Romano römisch
Roman pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. Aged" format means the lamp looks as if it has been buried for 2000 years. In fact, one of the most fantastic facts about these items is that they ... moreare being handmade manufactured in the same ancient techniques as used millenniums ago and from the same mix of terracotta, clay, mud, etc. Replica of antiquities are valuable because of their historical and cultural values and especially because of their provenance in the biblical lands during the biblical period. To own a"biblical" artifact is to possess a genuine. One-of-a-kind, object that puts one in actual physical contact with the world of the Bible. These unique items may be displayed as a testimony to biblical history as well as beautiful pieces of art and culture. ANCIENT ROMAN COLCHESTER CAMULODUNUM POTTERY + POTTER KILN in PROVINCIAL CAPITOL
The Roman Potters' Kilns of Colchester” By M.R. Hull. Published in Oxford; printed at the University Press for The Society of Antiquaries in 1963. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A scholarly study of Roman-era excavated kiln sites and their contents. Both the kilns themselves and the pottery found there are illustrated and discussed. And the construction and use of ancient kilns is also addressed. This publication was the"Report of the Research Committee of The Society of Antiquaries of London, No.XXI" Soon after the Roman conquest of Britain in AD 43. A Roman legionary fortress was established at Colchester, named Camulodunum by the Romans. The city was a provincial capitol of Roman Britain, and contained a large and elaborate temple dedicated to Emperor Claudius. The city was sacked during Boudica's ... morerebellion in AD 61, but was rebuilt with massive walls and a chariot race arena. Dr. John Morris, an English historian who specialized in the Roman and Sub-Roman Empire in Britain, suggested in his book"The Age of Arthur" 1973) that, as the descendants of Romanised Britons looked back to a golden age of peace and prosperity under Rome, the name"Camelot" of Arthurian legend was probably a reference to Camulodunum, the capital of Britannia in Roman times. Description This antique circa 1900 or earlier ancient Roman terracotta pottery unusual small urn from Siller in Majorca. Roman North African Redware Pottery Fragment 350-420AD The Apostle Paul.
A pair of Roman Red-ware sherds with The Apostle Paul running to Christ. North Africa, c. 5th Century AD From Acts 9- Similar fragments found in Light from the Age of Augustine. This piece is unique due to the legend found above the Apostle Paul's Halo. African red-ware Pottery provides some of the oldest motifs and portraits of Biblical characters. This pottery was influenced by the teaching of Saint Augustine of Hippo during the 4th and 5th century(AD 350-420) after the political conversion of the Roman by Emperor Constantine(AD 307-337) Constantine's conversion of the Empire from paganism to Christianity permitted for the inauguration of Christian motifs on public artwork. Many of Augustine's teachings. Hopes, and allegorical hermeneutics are portrayed throughout these Christian images. Though pagan worship and cultic practice ... morewere eventually banned by the imperial administration, many classical artwork themes of the pagans continued from the past Roman world as the clash between paganism and Christianity struggled to cohabitate. It is evident that these themes made their way into the new art of these Biblical characters. Some biblical characters on African red-ware are portrayed with the classical look of the roman gods among other forms of the continued pagan artistic tradition. African red-ware pottery provides us with an amazing window into the 4th and 5th century Christian world as influenced under the teachings of Augustine. Guaranteed Authentic.
