It is one of the most potent symbols represented in Egyptian art, often forming a part of decorative motifs. The ankh seems at least to be an evolved form of. Finely detailed carved shell cameo of a Roman soldier. In high relief. The filigree looks silver, but I didn't clean it, so I'm not sure. The best cameos are the ones with the most detail, and this one has it! It's truly beautiful. On the back of the pendant, the metal has a small nick which is not visible at all unless you look for it, and is only visible on the back. The entire pendant is 2" long by 1" across. A really nice Roman Designer necklace with bronze beads restrung with new clasp. The crescent is from the same time period but may not be bronze metal. It was added to make this a wearable piece of jewelry for those who like to wear historical artifacts. The designer was Elaine Teevens from a joint business of ours called Encore by Design: Wearing history. Elaine works in Monument Colorado and I add pieces off and on to my site when we develop a piece that is nice for wear.
