SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

Its origin is the area referred to as"The Holy Land" During Roman occupation, the province of Judaea. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays a fairly common but ornate palm branch design. The design present on the top, as can be seen, is even after the passage of almost 2,000 years, still quite sharp and distinct. You can see that the handle of this vessel is chipped up a bit, but this is fairly common wear. In fact, it is not uncommon for the handle to be entirely chipped off. The chipping to this specimen is relatively mild. You can also see that there are a few light alkaline soil deposits covering some areas of the lamp. The Homeric scene on this piece is an extremely rare and well preserved depiction of one of the classic tales from the ancient world. The discus of the lamp is impressed with the the climactic scene of the Trojan War. Achilles. Having killed Hector in single combat, raises his shield in victory as he drags the corpse of his opponent behind his chariot, which is shown in full gallop. The Greek hero is depicted standing tall, dwarfing both the horses and the body of Hector. He holds his shield and his spear in the left hand, whilst the right, probably originally holding the helmet of the defeated Trojan, is obscured by the pouring hole. RARE AND SUPERB ANCIENT ROMAN HIGHLY DECORATED POTTERY OIL LAMP This is a rare and superb Ancient Roman Highly Decorated Pottery Oil Lamp. Type Loeschcke VIII, in very fine condition. Roman Empire. C. Late 1st-2nd Century A.D. A Roman oil lamp with pierced handle and round nozzle. The sunken discus with central filling hole beautifully decorated with a seventeen-petal rosette in raised relief, framed by a beadings decoration around the shoulders of the lamp. Measures 12.1 cm in length and 9.0 cm width. Height 5.1 cm. Completely intact. Rare and in very fine condition with remains of brown pigment in places and partially some surface deposits still remaining as found. No repairs! Roman Pottery Oil Lamp with Bird on Branch CULTURE/ REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Empire. DATE: 1st Century CE(probably CE 40-100) DIMENSIONS: 8.8 cm(3.4 in. long; 6 cm(2.3 in. wide. DESCRIPTION: Intact. A mold-made Roman pottery oil lamp. The discus decorated with a bird, possibly a pea hen, alighting on a branch with clusters of fruit. The discus is defined by three concentric steps. The nozzle is triangular-ended and voluted. There is a single small fill hole in the discus, an air circulation slit between the discus and nozzle and a large wick hole with evidence of burning around it. The base is flat with no maker’s mark. The clay is fine grained and pinkish-buff, with much orange brown slip remaining all over. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Welsh private collection formed between the 1970s and 2008. PUBLISHED: Bonhams. Here we are offering this very rare 1st Century Roman oil lamp depicting a prancing lion and makers mark. This remarkable lamp is excellent condition with only a minor shallow chip on the underside and was part of a collection recently purchased by ourselves. It was purchased on the London art market during the 1980s when these items were more available. It measures 7.9 cms by 5.8cms and weighs 41.24 gms. Provenance. Ex M Wallis collection. DESCRIPTION: Intact. A late Roman pottery oil lamp from the Levantine region. The lamp is mold made and composed of course. Buff to pink clay with traces of a surviving slip. The lamp has a large central fill hole, small wick hole and slightly carinated body resting on a nearly flat unmarked base. The squarish nozzle is decorated in faint low relief with a palm leaf design between chevrons. A faintly discernible chevron pattern also appears on the thumb shaped handle. On the lower half of the body on one side is a partially discernible inscription in low relief Greek letters. The surface and interior are partially covered with limestone calcium deposits. A rare and very fine ancient Roman terracotta oil lamp. Dating to the 3rd- 4th century AD and depicting Hercules in one of the most popular scenes from all classical mythology. A wonderful. Large Roman oil lamp, the tondo decorated with an image of the divine hero, Hercules. He is shown standing, facing slightly right, draped in lionskin pelt and brandishing a club above his head. The lamp covered in an attractive red slip, the base with makers mark. Son of Zeus. Hercules was revered throughout the Greek world and beyond for his strength, cunning and bravery. Here he is depicted after the completion of his first great labour, slaying the Nemean Lion. Armed with only his bow and a wild olive tree he tore up by the roots to make a club, Hercules hunted through the forests where the lion had its lair. Having found his weapons could not pierce ... morethe animals thick hide, he strangled the beast with his bare hands and skinned it with its own sharp claws. This depiction shows Hercules in a moment of triumph, brandishing his olive club. Roman oil lamps were filled with olive oil and lit with a thick wick which protruded from the nozzle end.
