SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

Ancient Religious Clay Oil Lamp, Roman-4th Century,Red Slip, Small, Nice Pattern
This lamp features heavy pattern on the top. There is a maker's mark on the bottom and detailing on the handle. It is from a red slip and of the oldest variety of the Roman age. In very nice condition. Measures at 3.75" in length. You are purchasing the specific lamp shown here but I have others and can ship 2 per container. Check out my other offerings. Provenance: My father collected these objects while serving with the United Nations in the Middle East during the mid-1960's. I was a teenager at the time and recall how much he enjoyed collecting these lamps that were brought to him by the local villagers. He has since passed away and the family has decided to share them. DESCRIPTION: Intact. A mould-made Roman pottery oil lamp of very fine clay covered in a well preserved red slip. The discus is decorated with a bold image in rather high relief of Jupiter in about three-quarters angle. With well defined facial features and unruly hair and beard. One large and one small filling hole occupy the spaces to either side of Jupiter’s beard. The shoulder is decorated with sixteen shield-like medallions and separated from the discus by a double groove. Small special decorated herodian oil lamp. this lamp symbolize the period between the Hellenistic and the Roman period in the holy land The nose is typical herodian roman style but the shoulder decorated with hellenistic"sunburst" style RARE Herodian Oil Lamps. Also known as, Knife Parted Lamps, are dated between 37 BCE and 70 CE. They have a wheel made round body and the nozzle was separately made and later attached. These lamps are very seldom decorated and if there are any decorations they would be simple dots or lines appearing on the nozzle. The Herodian lamps are usually found in Judea and Jerusalem, therefore it seems they were mainly used by the Jewish population. A few were also found in the Galilee and in Transjordan.

It comes in a beautiful olive wood presentation box along with a nail I rescued from a cell in Acco(Acre) prison near Haifa. The lamp is in perfect condition as is the box it comes in. Ancient roman clay oil lamp depicting a cherub. Possibly 1st century. In very good condition 10cm x 7cm Oil lamps were one of the most common household items of ancient times. Lamps were used as early as the Stone Age. Clay lamps like this one were used all over the Mediterranean area from 2000 B.C. through the Middle Ages. They were used to burn oil. Usually a plant oil such as olive oil that was abundant. Archaeologists find fewer lamps in areas like Britain, because oil was scarce and expensive there. The lamp used a wick. Made from fibers such as linen or papyrus, that was inserted into the body of the lamp. The end of the wick rested in the nozzle. The oil was poured into the lamp though the filling hole on top of its body. The wick was lit and a small flame was emitted from the tip of the wick resting in the nozzle.
