But the wick will not raise. This may be an easy fix. The lamp, with chimney, measures 21" tall; without the chimney, it measures about 14 1/2" tall to the top of the burner. The font has a diamond and dot pattern, the column has Roman Gladiators, one with a spear and one with a spear and shield and the base has a sawtooth pattern along with a floral design on each of the feet. The base measures about 6" square. The collar and fill top unscrew with ease. This lamp is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. for more great items! Up for bids is this Ancient 4thC or 5thC Roman Terracotta Pottery Handled Oil Lamp. This piece would have been made right around the 4th or 5thC. The lamp is made of terracotta which has a handle and there are small circles that are decoration around the rim of the well. This piece measures 3 1/2" in length. 2 5/8" in width, and stands 1 7/8" in height. There could be a professional restoration that goes around the side of the rim because it lights up as a different color under black light but it could just be from the way this piece was made. There are no other chips, cracks, or breaks. This Ancient 4thC or 5thC Roman Terracotta Pottery Handled Oil Lamp will make a great addition to your collection. C3 Roman style bronze oil lamp. Purchased in Greece in 1969 . Age?
I bought this lamp in a flea market in Greece in 1969. It is 8" tall. I was intrigued with the simplicity and ingenuity of the design. It can stand. Be carried, hang from a ceiling and multiple lamps could be hung one from another. I didn't pay a lot for it and it was sold as a used lamp without any claims of how old it was. From appearance it seemed old and no one was trying to claim it was anything special. Someone with more experience than I should be able to appreciate it and determine its authenticity and age.
