Warschaw Collection 479- 480, Anawati Collection 296) It has a cross in the nozzle channel(best seen in photo 2) The lamp itself is in the form of a small round dish. With a turned-in rim and separate aperture for the wick Buff terracotta. Pointed handle, ridge around discus and nozzle forming channel The decoration around the edge is in the form of palm branches indicating the oil used in the lamp Signs of use in antiquity from burning around the wick area 6.5cm in length 5.3cm in width 3.9cm in height Please note the antiquities on sale in my eBay shop are 100% authentic and were given to me from the private collection belonging to my late father. Here is a VERY sweet small oil lamp. Which looks like it came from the Holy Lands, or Rome, but we think it is less than 50 years old. It has the shape and design, and decorations of the ancient Roman small oil lamps, but we are assuming it was made for the Tourist trade, or as a Souvenier item. Measures: just over 3 inches in diameter, and looks like it is unbroken. There may be a small pinch, or crack, near the" Handle" area. Oil lamps were used by the ancient people of the Middle East. ... moreEurope, and Northern Africa to light their homes at night. They were fueled by fish oil, animal oil and fat but mainly by vegetable(olive) oil. A woven fibrous wick was placed in the hole at the tip of the lamp to burn the oil. This group of people includes the Greeks, Romans, Jews, Early Christians, Egyptians, Muslims, Syrians, North Africans, Celts, Gauls, Britains, and even some early Crusaders. The time period for oil lamps is approximately from 300 BC through 900 AD. Generally they are thought of as Roman or early Islamic oil lamps. The examples here are earthenware ceramic or clay lamps. Oil lamps were also made in various metals and in glass. The traditional Roman technique for making clay lamps was to press the raw clay into gypsum molds. The two halves of the lamp were put together and the two holes were made. The green ware was then trimmed by hand using small metal tools and then fired in an oven. Ancient Greek Roman Oil Lamp Bulls Head Moon Rare Collectable
Ancient Greek/ Roman Oil Lamp Restored but a good example of a rare shape oil lamp. The lamp has a bronze coloured glaze. The lamp is finely decorated. Some of the details are slightly obscured by the mud and sand that adheres to the lamp. The main body of the lamp is sound with no chips or cracks. On the underside there is a pattern of a bunch of grapes moulded into the base. The moon. Which is mounted between the horns of the bull, was broken and restored many years ago. The hanging ring which was part of the representation of the moon has a small piece missing. There are some ancient mud and sand deposits. 7cm in length. The bulls head is 3.5cm at it widest point. This piece has been in the same large collection in the UK for 70 years. More expensive pieces in the collection have been authenticated and sold at auction in London. Paypal ... moreonly. A Roman pottery oil lamp of fine clay covered in a mostly well preserved red-brown slip. The discus is decorated with a high relief image of a two-handled crater with chevron patterns on its body and foliage in very low relief rising from it. There is a large filling hole to the left of the crater and a tiny air circulation hole just beneath it. The discus is separated from the sloping shoulder by two stepped concentric grooves. A rounded circular nozzle extends from the body on one side. While on the opposite side is a prominent raised loop handle accented with two parallel grooves. Type Loeschcke VIII, depicting Hercules, the Roman god of strength, perseverance and heroic endeavour, in very fine condition. Roman Empire. C. Late 1st-2nd Century A.D. A Roman oil lamp with round nozzle. Framed by volutes, the sunken discus beautifully decorated with the bust of the bearded Hercules in high relief facing left, wearing the Nemean lion skin pulled up over his head, holding his club over his left shoulder, framed by geometrical ornaments around the shoulders of the lamp, concentric circular decoration on the base. The moulded decoration on the tondo depicts Victory standing resolutely, holding her shield in the right hand and an olive branch in the left. The face is statuesque, even severe, yet the scene is far from static, her great wings stretch out behind, whilst the folds of her long garment flutter carelessly in the wind.
