We compared this semi-precious gemstone with other pieces that were similar and they were dated in the 1st to 3rd Century! WOW that is old! The metal the surrounds the stone is old as well. But not as old as the carved stone. The simple cuts to the stone bring this piece to life! Everyone knows the story of how Perseus, one of the first Greek heroes rode a Pegasus into battle! SO COOL! He is depicted here in his classic posture, with a beard and holding a serpent-entwined staff. This intaglio probably once belonged to a Greek doctor, set into his signet ring to authenticate bills and medical prescriptions. The cult of Aesculapius came from Greece. Where he was called Asclepius; it penetrated into Rome in the early third century B.C. According to legend, during a plague in Rome in 293 B.C. a prophecy was found in the Sibylline Books predicting that the epidemic would cease if a statue of the god were brought to Rome from the temple of Asclepius in Epidaurus. In 291 B.C. a temple of Aesculapius was built on an island in the Tiber. Rites in the Aesculapian temples proceeded just ... moreas in the Greek temples of Asclepius. Patients slept in the temple and had dreams containing useful advice; those who recovered made votive offerings to the god and left inscriptions of thanks. Antique Victorian SWIVEL PENDANT or WATCH FOB Intaglio Roman Soldier& Carnelian Antique Victorian. 1880s, 1-5/8" long x 1-1/8" wide x 3/4" flip or swivel watch fob or pendant with nicely detailed Roman Soldier on the face and smooth slice of Carnelian on the reverse. The frame includes a 5/16" jump ring with inside measurement of 3/16" or 5mm. The metal bezel, swivel frame, and jump ring are the color of rose gold, but there are no marks or tests to confirm this obversation. Condition is good to very good with chips and nicks on the edge of the opaque stone. As well as 2 tight hairline cracks that are only visible on the side. The stones on the reverese have just a few tiny nicks on the edges. The gold( bezel has 2 fine scratches on the top edge. Up for sale is this Lot of 10- Vintage Carved Intaglio Tiger Eye Roman Soldier Some w/ broken noses or chips on the bottoms. The dark brown oval one has some major chips on the edge mostly. But the face of that one is still intact. The large brown rectangle one has really exquisite detailing, but alas the nose is broken on the background one but I do not think that it ruins the look of the stone. A few have more chipped edges on the reverse so be sure to look at the last pictures carefully, it shows those scratches and chips. Includes insured shipping with delivery confirmation.
