Antique Greek Helmet Hat Possible Theater Prop Roman Feel
Up for auction is very unusual antique hat which I believe could be a theater prop. The shell of the hat is a hard material that is covered with sewn cloth. The original colors seem to have been green and purple but has faded over the years. Look closely at the close up pictures of the material. The top has a 2 piece metal spike held to the hat with a wire that runs through the top of the hat. The back has a metal"band" that has a Greek flair to it as far as the shape and design. It has 2 round emblems that depict a roman soldier or citizen on each side of the band and a floral motif in the center. The hat is in solid shape overall but does have wear and minor condition issues due to age. The cloth exterior is discolored and faded and has unraveled areas. The metal is tarnished and has rub spots, the brim border has spots of wear, ... moreetc. The underside or inside of the hat shows wear as well. The inside headband is very fragile from age. Ancient Roman Helmet Button - Copper or Bronze - Cone Shank - 18th to Early 19th
This seven-eighths inch button boasts the strong image of an early Roman soldier's helmet. I can't tell if it is bronze or copper. But it is not brass. The metal has a rose gold tint. It isn't attracted to a magnet, although the hoop shank is. When I first found this button you could just barely tell that it was a button. I worked on it with a tooth brush and dry paint brushes for about 6 or 7 hours over a 3 day period to get it to this condition. It has a cone shank that was used from the 1700s to the early 1800s. The fine item you are considering is a Vintage Heavy Metal Roman Legion Centurion Soldier Helmet. I have lots of photos below. This quality reproduction of a Roman helmet is in very nice overall condition and is quite heavy, being made of heavy metal, with articulated side flaps. The helmet shows wear and light surface oxidation, but this only serves to make it more authentic looking, and the helmet is in great, solid shape. Someone put some soft foam on the inside so you could wear it without your head being hurt, with the helmet being a little on the small side. He was the Son In Law of King Ferdinand of Spain. Carl lived in Palm Springs and when he found out we like ancient items he opened his private gallery to us. Over the years we aquired all kinds of unique items. This is one of our favoeite pieces. This is a Roman Soldier with his sword and shield and wearing his helmet. He measures 4 1/2 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches at the widest point. He's in excellent condition for his age. Hes made from bronze and if you look at the last picture you can see that a piece of wood was inserted in the bottom for balance. This piece is guaranteed to be authentic and its also extremely rare.
