TWO - 14.5" Graduated Strands, Ancient Roman Green Glass Beads- A.D. 400-700
This listing is for a set of two. 14.5" graduated strands of ancient Roman green glass beads, circa A.D. 400-700. Many years ago I bought a hoard of ancient Roman glass beads which are of a highly desirable green color. The beads have been strung into graduated strands and were put together so they could be easily finished as a necklace with the addition of a clasp. Or so the beads could be easily removed to use in making other items, such as earrings and bracelets, or mixed in with different types of beads in making jewelry pieces. These are scarce and very desirable Roman beads. Dating to circa A.D. 400 to 700. They are glass, which is much more desirable than the common terracotta or fired clay beads from this period. I purchased this group from a highly reputable dealer in London from whom I have acquired a great many hoards of antiquities, ... morefossils, and coins over the years. These examples both measure 14 1/2 inches in length. And the individual beads measure from 3mm to 6mm. Please look at the pictures carefully, since the strands photographed are the exact strands you will receive. I am offering these very interesting pieces for a bargain buy it now price just $29.95, although I personally paid considerably more than that years ago. I have enjoyed owning them, but it's time to let them go to a new home for whatever the bidding determines. NOTE: You will be buying a set of TWO strands. Both of which are pictured above. All items are guaranteed to be genuine and as described. We do not deal in any fakes or reproductions. If you have any questions regarding the authenticity of any of our items. Please contact me and I will do my best to answer any concerns you may have. Terms and Payment: I accept PayPal only. Within the United States. Superb Extra Large Genuine Ancient Roman Antiochia Syria Glass Vial 100AD
Genuine Ancient Roman Iridescent Blown Glass Vial. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Blown Glass Vial. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Syria) 1st Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 80 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 11 millimeters(1/2 inch) Neck Diameter: 8 millimeters(1/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 16 millimeters(2/3 inch) Weight: 5.99 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen ... moreis over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

Ancient Roman Glass Iridescent Squat Bottle / Flask -150 A.D.
A beautiful and charming ancient Roman glass bottle. Dating to the 2nd Century A.D. Constructed from translucent. Thick walled glass with flat, circular base, gently tapering body and wide, everted and ridged mouth. This bottle exhibits a pontil mark. Or glass-blowing scar, left behind when the piece was removed from the glass-blowing rod by the vitrearius. Or glassworker. The elegant shape of the vessel, unusual upturned base demonstrates the advanced glass-blowing skills achieved in the Late Roman Empire. The term'iridescence' is derived. In part, from the Greek rainbow goddess, Iris, messenger of the Gods. This stunning play of colours exhibited by some pieces of ancient glass is caused by minerals in the surrounding earth, forming tiny, flakey layers which build up on the surface of the glass and in turn cause the differential ... morerefraction of light, producing a magnificent rainbow of colours for the viewer. TWO - 15 1/4" Graduated Strands, Ancient Roman Green Glass Beads- A.D. 400-700
This listing is for a set of two. 15 1/4" graduated strands of ancient Roman green glass beads, circa A.D. I purchased this group from a highly reputable dealer in London from whom I have acquired a great many hoards of ... moreantiquities, fossils, and coins over the years. These examples both measure 15 1/4 inches in length. And the individual beads measure from 3mm to 8mm. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were ... morefound between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of mone. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat city(the capital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The i

Ancient Roman Double Bezel Bronze Ring with Light Pink Glass Gem 200-300 AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About the Roman Rings Romans liked to wear big rings which drew attention and revealed the status of the wearer. A gold ring often contained a huge gemstone or Roman glass which was generally worn by the Senators and the bureaucrats. The common people referred as the Plebeians were allowed to wear only rings made of iron. However. Some Plebeians were awarded the right to wear the golden rings for their bravery or special service to the state. But gradually such stringent rules were relaxed during the reign of Justinian I. Women of ancient Rome were more inclined to wear multiple rings of varied materials and designs on their hands without the constraints of social classes. THE PORTLAND VASE - ANCIENT ROMAN CAMEO GLASS
The Portland Vase. The Extraordinary Odyssey of a Mysterious Roman Treasure” By Robin Brooks. Published in New York by Harper Collins in 2004. DISCUSSION: The Portland Vase is a marvelous piece of ancient cameo glass. Intricately carved by modern standards, to say nothing of the problems it must have presented for ancient Roman glass carvers. Created for an Emperor, exhumed from a burial ground, coveted, traded, smashed, restored, and stuffed full of incident and intrigue, the Portland Vase- the most famous of all Roman antiquities- has captivated everyone who has come into contact with it. There was Fabrizio Lazzaro, the archeologist/tomb robber who discovered it, Pope Urban VIII who wanted to acquire it, the Princess of Palestrina who supported her gambling by selling it, the Duchess of Portland, who owned it in secret yet gave it a name, ... moreJosiah Wedgwood, whose intricate copies finished the job of immortalizing it, the madman who smashed it to bits, and the restorers who managed to piece it back together. all those figures, and more, dance across the glassy stage.
