This listing is for a set of two. 14.5" graduated strands of ancient Roman green glass beads, circa A.D. 400-700. Many years ago I bought a hoard of ancient Roman glass beads which are of a highly desirable green color. The beads have been strung into graduated strands and were put together so they could be easily finished as a necklace with the addition of a clasp. Or so the beads could be easily removed to use in making other items, such as earrings and bracelets, or mixed in with different types of beads in making jewelry pieces. These are scarce and very desirable Roman beads. Dating to circa A.D. 400 to 700. They are glass, which is much more desirable than the common terracotta or fired clay beads from this period. I purchased this group from a highly reputable dealer in London from whom I have acquired a great many hoards of antiquities, ... morefossils, and coins over the years. These examples both measure 14 1/2 inches in length. And the individual beads measure from 3mm to 6mm. Please look at the pictures carefully, since the strands photographed are the exact strands you will receive. This listing is for a set of two. 15.5" graduated strands of ancient Roman cobalt blue glass beads, circa A.D. 400-700. Many years ago I bought a hoard of ancient Roman glass beads which are of a highly desirable cobalt blue color. The beads have been strung into graduated strands and were put together so they could be easily finished as a necklace with the addition of a clasp. Or so the beads could be easily removed to use in making other items, such as earrings and bracelets, or mixed in with different types of beads in making jewelry pieces. These are scarce and very desirable Roman beads. Dating to circa A.D. 400 to 700. They are glass, which is much more desirable than the common terracotta or fired clay beads from this period. I purchased this group from a highly reputable dealer in London from whom I have acquired a great many ... morehoards of antiquities, fossils, and coins over the years. These examples both measure 15 1/2 inches in length. And the individual beads measure from 3mm to 7mm. It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Many years ago I bought a hoard of ancient Roman glass beads which are of a highly desirable green color. The beads have been strung into graduated strands and were put together so they could be easily finished as a necklace with the addition of a clasp. Or so the beads could be easily removed to use in making other items, such as earrings and bracelets, or mixed in with different types of beads in making jewelry pieces. These are scarce and very desirable Roman beads. Dating to circa A.D. 400 to 700. They are glass, which is much more desirable than the common terracotta or fired clay beads from this period.
