Roman Bronze Zoomorphic Brooch Rabbit
Roman Bronze Zoomorphic Brooch Rabbit measures: 39 mm/ 21 mm weight: 13 gm The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the empire reached ... moreits greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. Imp. Diocletian ~ Ancient Roman Copper or Bronze Coin
Emperor Diocletian Ancient Roman Coin I do not know if this is a copper or a bronze Roman coin. I do not have knowledge of ancient Roman coins. So I am just writing what I see on this particular coin. On the obverse is a portrait of the Emperor Diocletian, and on the reverse, there appears to be two standing soldiers holding an winged god with a wreath? It also looks like there is a large letter B near the bottom of the reverse. The details are pretty clear even after the passing of so many centuries. Pay Pal.

Her head is tilted slightly right and decorated with a stephane, decorative wreath) her hair dressed in a chignon and her arms raised to wring the water from her damp hair. This wonderful statuette is based on a famous Greek work that did not survive antiquity. It's beauty inspired later Roman sculptors to recreate the work, such as the present example. The goddess is shown as she rises from the sea, born from the froth of the water's surface, raising her arms to squeeze the water from her still wet hair. For another example. You can still see(with some difficulty) some of the complex engraving(a criss-cross hatch mark design) which survived the ordeal of burial for thousands of years. The engravings are very difficult to discern throughout most of the bracelet(except a little peek here and there) However they are quite clear and unmistakable near both tips/ends of the bracelet. The bracelet is a bit uncommon in that a cross-section would show the stock to be in a diamond shape, in essence square stock oriented on its edges(with soft corners) Most bracelets of this era and region were produced with round stock. This bracelet has very pronounced Celtic influences. The bracelet is not large. And would be unlikely to fit anyone today except a lady of very slight proportions. However given that ancient populations

Though very simple, primitive Roman bronze bracelet constructed of stock which leans toward square, circa first century AD. It would fit a woman of very slight build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely disfigured by corrosion, this particular piece happened to come to rest in reasonably gentle soil conditions. The consequence is that though you can see clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. Of course in these photo enlargements. Or to close scrutiny, these blemishes are quite distinct. The entire bracelet bears witness to the fact that it spent

Findings suggest that jewelry making became more prevalent over 40.000 years ago as mankind migrated from Africa and the Middle East into continental Europe. Early necklaces and bracelets were made from readily available materials such as bone, teeth, shells and stone strung together using twine from animal sinew or catgut. The forging of copper some 7.000 years ago allowed metal to be utilized as a material to craft jewelry. The smelting of copper and tin to make the alloy bronze heralded the advent of the Bronze Age some 5.000-6,000 years ago. It is conceivable that metal workers used their knowledge of metallurgy to craft items of adornment as well as tools and weapons. Jewelry has served(and continues to serve) three basic roles. As an ornament it attracts attention and could be used as a testament to hunting prowess or more general attributes. As an amulet holding supernatural power it protected the wearer against physical harm. Warded off evil and healed ailments. As society evolved it also became a symbol of wealth or social standing. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) However most small metal artifacts such as this suffer extensive disfigurement due to heavy porosity, or corrosion. Although this specimen possesses obvious and unmistakable signs of burial, the piece is not heavily corroded or disfigured to this extent. The bracelet does not exhibit the workmanship which would be characteristic of high-end jewelry. Rather this is a specimen as one might expect to find on a child of a common Roman citizen or soldier. It is a wonderful example of early Roman jewelry, and of unimpaired integrity. The bracelet possesses a very nice tone to it. Is quite handsome, and makes a very distinctive and uncommon piece of ancient jewelry. The Romans were very fond of jewelry and other personal adornments. Typical jewelry included bracelets worn both on the forearm as well as upper arm, rings, brooches, pendants, earrings, hair pins, as well as decorative buckles and fibulae. Inasmuch as the bracelet is too small to be worn as a bracelet, and

The more archaic rings produced by Roman artisans were characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime. As it would take most of a life time to wear down the raised platform bezel to the extent evidenced. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down betwe

Paleolithic items of adornment have been unearthed that date back 75.000-100,000 years. It is theorized that jewelry originated as a purely functional item used to fasten animal hides together allowing them to be worn as clothing. Findings suggest that jewelry making became more prevalent over 40.000 years ago as mankind migrated from Africa and the Middle ... moreEast into continental Europe. Rings were extremely popular among the Romans. Their faith in the curative and protective powers attributed to some stones(as well as shapes and images) provided additional incentive to wear these amulets on their fingers. There were certain rules in the fashion

It is today known as'the eternal city' The Romans believed that their city was founded in the year 753 BC. Modern historians though believe it was the year 625 BC. Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves. They then instead had a council known as the'senate' which ruled over them. From this point on one speaks of the'Roman Republic'The word'Republic' ... moreitself comes from the Latin(the language of the Romans) words'res publica' which mean'public matters' or'matters of state' The senate under the kings had only been there to advise the king. Now the senate appointed a consul, who ruled Rome like a king, but only for one year. This was a wise idea, as like that, the consul ruled carefully and not as a tyrant, for he knew that otherwise he could be punished by the next consul, once his year was up.Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans. The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all. The second highest class were the equestrians(sometimes they are called the'knights' Their name means the'riders' as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called'patricians' All the real power in Rome lay with them. The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC- alm
