RARE Bronze MERCURY Figure ANCIENT ROMAN Museum QUALITY SCULPTURE ART FIGURINE Description Condition: This sculpture is in perfect condition. Bronze Dimensions:Height ... more65" x Width 22" Weight: 70 LBS Inventory: 258506247952 Borne aloft by the wind. Mercury is the messenger of the gods. To the Greeks, his name was Hermes. He was the swiftest of the Gods, the messenger of Zeus, a job he shared with Iris, Goddess of the Dawn. His parents were Zeus and Maia, Goddess of the Clouds. Wearing his winged helmet bearing his caduceus, his golden winged sandals bore him swiftly as a breath of air over land and sea. Known as a guide and giver of good, he was the God of traders, travel, and good fortune. The Art of Lost Wax Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand how the process actually works. Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. These molds are the only components that are ever re-used in the casting process. All other components are re-created for each casting. The Wax Positive Once the molds are done. The insides are coated with layers of wax. The halves are then bound together and wax poured inside to complete the wax image being created. Once the wax has cooled. The mold is peeled away, yielding a wax image(the wax positive" duplicating the original sculpture. This image must then be"touched-up" to remove any seam lines. Scratches or other flaws, as well as to recreate any pattern or texturing that

Sotheby's 6/7/12 ANTIQUITIES Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian, Classical, Wester
This is a book for the Sotheby's auction catalog sale held in New York on June 7. 2012 for Antiquities, covering 79 lots in 75 pages. All lots illustrated in color. Excellent condition. Here is what Sotheby's had to say about its sale: This season’s Antiquities auction will include a variety of examples of Egyptian, Classical and Western Asiatic material. We are pleased to offer, from the Estate of Jan Mitchell, a rare and complete Greek marble grave stele from the mid to late 4th century B.C. showing a young boy with his dog, found in Athens in 1877. Three Greek pottery vases to be offered from this estate were once the property of William Randolph Hearst; one comes originally from George Waddington(1793-1869) Dean of Durham Cathedral, one from Alfred Bourguignon, the late 19th century Neapolitan collector and dealer, and one from ... morethe Ruesch Collection dispersed in Switzerland in 1936. The sale also includes a draped marble figure of a muse holding a lyre, which came to light in 1891 on the slopes of Mount Helikon. Among other fine examples of Roman marble sculpture is a long-lost almost life-size figure of Aphrodite, from the collection of the Regency collector and designer Thomas Hope, a newly rediscovered figure of Artemis of the Dresden Type, unearthed and published in the 1880s with a figure of Kybele, also in the sale, and a figure of Sophocles once at Marbury Hall and acquired by James Hugh Fitz-Barry from Thomas Jenkins in the 1770s. The highlight of the Egyptian section is a complete limestone block statue of a transport official named Karo, who worked at the court of King Rameses III; once in the private museum of a convent in Vienna, a gift made to the congregation in the 19th century, it was last sold in these room in 1998. Among the gems of the sale are a small Predynastic stone vessel of unusual and pleasing shape, and a slender Greek marble wing with remains of red pigment. Powered by The free listing tool. HOW WE GRADE THE CONDITION OF BOOKS Please remember that grading the condition of a book is not a science. And the human element naturally can lead to mistakes. We try to be as accurate as possible, but one person’s“excellent” may be another person’s“very good. The difference is subjective and often a matter of degree. 1521 Post Incunable ANCIENT Roman EPITAPHS Ruins ANTIQUITIES History TYPEFACE
Epigrammata antiquae urbis: cautum edicto Leonis X Pont. Opt. Max. ne quis in septennium hoc opus excudat alioqui revs esto noxamque pendito. Jacopo Mazzocchi; Angelo Colocci. Romae: In aedib. Iacobi Mazochii Romanae acad. bibliopolae, 1521. Rare early Post Incunable on Roman antiquities. With gorgeous Roman typeface typography and illustrations. T he first printed repertory of Roman inscriptions. Epigrammata Antiquae Urbis(April 1521) Contains some 3,000 inscriptions, mostly of epitaphs. This work includes inscriptions ranging from Roman Republican times to the age of Justinian I and is illustrated with somewhat stylized woodcuts showing some of the buildings and monuments of Rome, such as the Pantheon, the Arch of Constantine, and the Pyramid of Cestius. Typographically Mazzocchi's work is of interest for his very early use of a large-format ... moreupper-case roman typeface for title-pages, headings and other prominent lines. This is present in the Epigrammata but existed at least as early as 1513. Early printers in roman type generally set titles and headings in the same size and style as the text. And it was mainly German-speaking printers such as Froben who developed the use of display-sized fonts from about 1516 onwards, so that Mazzocchi's type may well have been the first of its kind. And there is no doubt- this fragment displays some of that fine use as well as some stunning woodcuts. Finely bound into a small folio. 11.75" x 8.25" featuring recent red half calf over grained cloth; the spine with five raised bands with gilt deco. Light external wear. Very well preserved, the interior pages remain(for the most part) in good shape, although there are a handful with excessive staining, as shown. There are also a few other small repairs, chips and losses throughout, with the final leaf laid down and with various paper strip repairs. Which displays some fine hand colored initials as well. Sadly this remains largely a fragment with about only 1/2 of the original work present. The colophon. However, r

Ancient Roman lot bronze Military artifacts, antiquities fibulas pendants art
This is a really nice large collection lot of Bronze Roman artifacts I purchased on line at different times. They appear to have rusted patina. As with many small bronze items purchased from overseas sellers I cannot guarantee that they are absolutely authentic since there have been imitations made and I do not have any certificates of authenticity. I am not an expert on rust patterns. They have come from different sellers. In any event they appear real but if not. The replications represent the shapes and designs used by soldiers and by other people as well. There are phallic pendant type items, buckles, clasps, fibulas and pendants. View the list before buying and ask questions. It represents a nice collection of artifacts from the Roman period when it was spread across Europe and the Middle east, often found along the Old Silk Road. Some ... moresellers have commented that it is hard to farm land without unearthing a lot of bronze items that have lain around for years. The main photo shows the entire lot. CA: 200 BC-250AD. Size: averaging 1-1 1/2 inches across. I have priced them lower than my collective price for each to sell the entire lot and in the event some may not be authentic so they are priced for their aesthetic value. They could be used as center pieces for making jewelry and other collectibles for the artistically inclined. See my other Pre Columbian artifacts. Trench art and unique items. Inca Treasures LTD.
