The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. NICE AUTHENTIC PAINTED PRE COLUMBIAN POTTERY BOWL FROM EARLY ARIZONA COLLECTION
NICE PAINTED PRE-COLUMBIAN POTTERY BOWL FROM EARLY ARIZONA COLLECTION AT AN ARTIFACT SHOW I WAS ATTENDING NOT LONG AGO. A WOMAN WHO LIVED IN THE AREA CAME IN WITH A SMALL COLLECTION OF ARTIFACTS SHE HAD INHERITED YEARS PRIOR FROM HER GRANDPARENTS. THE GRANDPARENTS HAD LIVED IN ARIZONA IN THE EARLY 1900'S AND HAD SPENT MUCH OF THEIR FREE TIME SEARCHING FOR ARROWHEADS IN THE SOUTHWEST US AND IN NEIGHBORING MEXICO. IN THEIR LATER YEARS THEY HAD PURCHASED FROM A LOCAL DEALER A FEW STONE ITEMS AND SOME PREHISTORIC POTTERY FROM WESTERN MEXICO. MOST OF THE FOUND ARTIFACTS HAD BEEN CAREFULLY MARKED WITH A CODE AS TO WHICH SITE THEY CAME FROM AND THE PURCHASED PIECES WERE USUALLY MARKED WITH DATE OF PURCHASE AND PLACE OF ORIGIN. WHEN THE GRANDPARENTS PASSED AWAY, THE HOUSE HAD BEEN CLEANED OUT BY THE WOMAN'S BROTHER AND THE FIELD NOTES WITH ... moreALL THE SITE LOCATIONS HAD UNFORTUNATELY BEEN DISCARDED AS TRASH. CONSEQUENTLY, I HAVE A LOT OF PERSONAL FOUND POINTS AND OTHER ITEMS WHICH THE WOMAN CONSIGNED TO ME WITH NO EXACT PROVENIENCE. THIS NICELY PAINTED BOWL IS MARKED WITH SITE NUMBER MB74. PRE COLUMBIAN ECUADOR AUTHENTIC FIGURAL POTTERY WHISTLE OCARINA JAMACOAQUE LG
PRE COLUMBIAN POTTERY WHISTLE ECUADOR AUTHENTIC This is a large authentic Pre Columbian pottery. Terra cotta, whistle/ ocarina from ecuador. Jamacoaque from a private collection dating 350 B C- 1200 A D. This is not a reprodution. The front has a human head on what sems to be the front of a jaguar with paw feet. It tapers to a rounded point and has a handle. The face has excellent detail with deep set eyes with brow ridges, earrings, very prominent nose ring and an open mouth with pointed teeth. The teeth give it a rather frightening appearance no doubt intentional. The nose is not damaged but obscured by the thick nose ring that hangs down onto the top lip. The head with a headdress and side lappets. There is a hole at the back end and one in back of the head. The body is clear but I believe there is still debris in the head as IT WILL NOT ... moreTWEET. I did not want to try to dislodge debris and damage the holes. It measures 4 1/2 inches long and approx 4 1/4 inches high and rests on two paw feet. Clay color is a buff color not quite as dark as in the photos. I am saying Jamacoaque but it was in with Jamacoaque and also La Tolita fragments and I am not an expert. It is in very good condition with some chips to the side lappets that are not evident from the front but I have the damage pictured. I see evidence of an old repair or restoration on the front legs as there is a thin line that extends over to the back(see photos) However. I do not see evidence of a clean break all around and I do not see any type of glue in the lines. The clay color is very consisent and the restoration or repair was done a long time ago in Ecuador and not by the private collector who brought them back years ago. There seems to be no evidence of trying to hide the breaks unless they were cracks and the piece was not broken or separated. Other pieces in the collection had repairs and evidence of glue and some of these are in my other listings. I have close up photos of the lines or breaks that i have darkened a bit in the photos to show
PRE COLUMBIAN PENDANT POTTERY FRAGMENT AUTHENTIC STERLING SILVER MOUNTING
PRE COLUMBIAN PENDANT POTTERY FRAGMENT AUTHENTIC Highly unusual pre columbian pottery fragment mounted as a pendant in sterling silver. I am not sure if this is from Ecuador or Mexico as I am not an expert. The head is a fragment with damage to the nose and cheeks evident in the photos. It seems to be female as there are large ear ornaments. I have it photographed from all angles. In close up the small white specks are actually tiny crystals in the pottery and there is also a silvery glaze over parts in the pottery. This is a very nice detailed fragment and looks clearer when photographed further away. A very unusual piece of jewelry I am sure made for someone who collected the piece. I purchased it 30 years ago in an estate. This piece has been professionally mounted on a thick piece of sterling silver with four large prongs and marked STERLING ... moreon the back The top has a sterling bale that measures 3/4 inches high and will accommodate a large chain as the opening is 1/4 inch. The piece measures 2" across and 1 3/4 inches high and has a total weight of 2.31 regular ounces. The wire is not included in the sale but was the best way to display the pendant.
PRE COLUMBIAN ECUADOR POTTERY SEATED FEMALE FIGURE JAMACOAQUE AUTHENTIC
PRE COLUMBIAN FIGURE ECUADOR JAMACOAQUE This is an authentic pottery Jamacoaque seated figure from Ecuador. Although small. 3 1/4" high, it still has nice detail and is very three dimensional. It seems to be a seated female wearing an elaborate headdress, necklaces and large ear plugs. The hands are resting on the knees and are worn and she is missing the tips of both feet. The figure has the characteristic ritually deformed head seen in the side and back photographs. The nose is worn but the facial features are still quite visible. It will stand by itself as the bottom is flat. There is no decoration on the back which is completely smooth. The color of the clay is beige and uniform in color. It will display nicely when lit from above as the details show better with shadows rather than straight on face front. The colored cloth was an ... moreexperiment but it also make the details more distinct. The figure is from a private collection and has not been cleaned. PRE-COLUMBIAN TUZA NARINO CULTURE FOOTED BOWL WITH STAR FELINE MOTIFS POTTERY
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a fine and beautiful Pre-Columbian annular footed bowl. From the Tuza Culture of the Narino highlands of Colombia. It has a simple brown slip-decorated interior. The design features an eight-pronged star in the central tondo in the bottom of the interior. Above the star is a wide band or frieze depicting four felines that are aligned with the four terminal points of the star. Tuza designs are often divided into quadrants in this way, perhaps suggesting a cosmic orientation to the four directions of the compass. This type of star motif is also common in both the American West and Southwest, where it is identified as representing the planet Venus. Noted pre-Columbian scholar Armand J. Labbe suggests"the two-pronged arm of the cross(eight prongs constituting ... morefour arms) is used to indicate that Venus is no ordinary star, but has a morning and an evening aspect- hence its use as a symbol of duality by pre-hispanic Mesoamericans. The bowl measures 7.75 inches in diameter by 4 inches in height(19.6 cm by 10.1 cm) It shows wear consistent with a dating to the Tuza culture(1250-1500 A.D. including rubbing, tiny scratches, small chips, and magnesium staining. Once quite common on the art market, these bowls are becoming increasingly rare. It is guaranteed authentic and would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. Pre-Columbian Casas Grandes Human Effigy Vessel, Paquime Pottery-Polychrome Olla
Pre-Columbian Casas Grandes Human Effigy Vessel. Paquime Pottery, Polychrome Olla Pot. This is a very old Native American pot& the clay has a lot of minerals in it, causing some surface irregularities, but there are no visible cracks or chips. It is also dirty, but I'll leave that to the experts. Use the zoom to get a good look at it. This vessel is 4 1/2" tall& 3 1/2" at it's widest. The opening at the top is 1 1/2" wide. It has a bulbous body with a human facing rising above. The background is off white with a geometric design in black& red. The design consists of upright& inverted steps, with triangles& black lines. The face is amazing with raised ears, eyes, nose, mouth, painted black lines around the eyes, squiggly lines on the cheeks with lines underneath that continue behind the head to form ... morea bird pattern. It is not signed. Casas Grandes, also know as Paquime, was a culture that thrived from 1100 AD to 1450 AD in northwestern Mexico near the present state of Chihuahua. It is one of the largest& most significant archaeological zones in the area, as it has been inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Their population numbered close to ten thousand people who developed a trade network with the Hohokam& Anasazi people. Their unique style of pottery features geometric polychrome designs using red& black and this human effigy pot is a wonderful example of their pottery skills. An important historical piece of Casa Grande pottery for any collector. Overseas Bidders/Buyers: You are responsible for any customs charges.
