PRE COLUMBIAN POTTERY WHISTLE ECUADOR AUTHENTIC This is a large authentic Pre Columbian pottery. Terra cotta, whistle/ ocarina from ecuador. Jamacoaque ... morefrom a private collection dating 350 B C- 1200 A D. This is not a reprodution. The front has a human head on what sems to be the front of a jaguar with paw feet. It tapers to a rounded point and has a handle. The face has excellent detail with deep set eyes with brow ridges, earrings, very prominent nose ring and an open mouth with pointed teeth. The teeth give it a rather frightening appearance no doubt intentional. The nose is not damaged but obscured by the thick nose ring that hangs down onto the top lip. The head with a headdress and side lappets. There is a hole at the back end and one in back of the head. The body is clear but I believe there is still debris in the head as IT WILL NOT TWEET. I did not want to try to dislodge debris and damage the holes. It measures 4 1/2 inches long and approx 4 1/4 inches high and rests on two paw feet. Clay color is a buff color not quite as dark as in the photos. I am saying Jamacoaque but it was in with Jamacoaque and also La Tolita fragments and I am not an expert. It is in very good condition with some chips to the side lappets that are not evident from the front but I have the damage pictured. I see evidence of an old repair or restoration on the front legs as there is a thin line that extends over to the back(see photos) However. I do not see evidence of a clean break all around and I do not see any type of glue in the lines. The clay color is very consisent and the restoration or repair was done a long time ago in Ecuador and not by the private collector who brought them back years ago. There seems to be no evidence of trying to hide the breaks unless they were cracks and the piece was not broken or separated. Other pieces in the collection had repairs and evidence of glue and some of these are in my other listings. I have close up photos of the lines or breaks that i have darkened a bit in the photos to show

Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Vessel - 1200 AD
A pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware bottle or jar. This ovoid vessel with a flaring neck and arched handles has two appliquéd pods attached to one of its handles. The cream slipped body is decorated with a series of vertical brown bands. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, desert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central ... morePeru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. The artisan who produced this piece would have been under the control of the local kuraka(clan leader) Who regulated the production activities of the various specialists, farmers and festive activities within his community. A beautiful and highly desirable piece of pre-Columbian art. Condition: Excellent. Some minor restoration to rim. Height: 10 1/2 inches. Exhibited: The City Art Centre. Edinburgh, Scotland August 15th, 1983- October 2nd, 1983. Bayley Art Museum. University of Virginia November 15th, 1983- January 15th, 1984. Published: Full page illustration and description in. Art of The Andes Pre-Columbian Sculpted and Painted Ceramics from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections. p 300. LOT 2 AUTHENTIC 23" TALL PRE COLUMBIAN POTTERY FUNERAL URNS ARGENTINA ARTIFACT
Sometimes we get really lucky here in old Charleston. SC and see very rare and special antiquities collected by families going back many generations come through our local high end estate auctions. This is the case with this amazing set of 2 terrific 23 inch tall funerary urns, circa 1000-1400 A.D. These urns measure about 15 3/4 inches across their widest points. They are most similar in my research to those found in the Archeaological Museum of Andalgala, province of Catamarca, Argentina and attributed to the Santamariana culture. They describe this as urns used primarily for the burial of babies who died in the seventh moth of pregnancy due to a lack of iodine. Others of these funeral urns contained the remains of human sacrifices performed during important natural disasters such as droughts or floods. In such occasions persons offered ... moretheir most precious belongings to their gods and these sacrifices could go to the extreme of scarifying, and eventually sacrificing. A child. In further research as I understand it. The Santamariana culture of those of the Calchaqui tribe are among those referred to as the Daiguita peoples. According to a Chilean tourism website, this ancient Amerindian people were settled over the southern part of the American continent. In the areas of Catamarca and La Rioja in Argentina and the region between the Copiapó and Choapa Rivers in Chile. They are frequently mentioned as being of the same culture as the Calchaquíes, since the two peoples shared the same cultural space. The two tribes share their agricultural base. The types of their villages and dwellings, and their industries, socio-political structure and beliefs, strongly influenced by Pan Andean substrates. They were prolific producers of ceramics, in particular they left an abundance of highly characteristic funeral urns, round-bodied and flat based, with scalloped edges and small looped handles, and decorated with cream, ochre, brown and black paint. These were used to preserve bodies, thought to belong to sacrificed

Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Lama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central Peru. A charming piece of pre-Columbian art. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration to right hind quarter. It has been perforated in the middle of the back during antiquity. This piece bears its original inventory sticker on the base. Length: 14 1/4 inches. Exhibited: The City Art Centre. Edinburgh, Scotland August 15th,
