Very Cool Replica Pre-Columbian Sculpted Face Pottery South America
This is a very cool replica Pre-Columbian pot from South America. It has a sculpted nose and mouth on each side. Eyes that are also running figures, and an impressive design all the way around. Measures 5 1/2" T X 7 1/2" at rim of pot. The pot is in very nice condition other than fading of designs and rubbing of slip(see photos) There is one small area at the very rim above the face on one side that may have been repaired. Right on the rim an area of about an inch feels rougher than the rest and is a little whiter. The inside from this is darker than the rest of the pot. It is hard for me to tell but the exterior of the pot has not been changed in any way.

Pre Columbian Chimu Lambayeque Pottery Peruvian Double Spout Vessel - 700 AD
A pre-Columbian Lambayeque-Chimu culture double spout vessel. Dating to 700– 1200 AD. This footed vessel has three sharply divided sections; a ring base. Body with a sharp ridge at the shoulder and two long, tapered spouts with an arched bridge handle. Beautiful painted decoration covers the majority of the tan slip. At first glance this exuberant vessel might appear to be decorated with simple scenes from the natural world. Yet look closer and it is in fact telling a story of the supernatural. A tale of immortality that was popular long before the Spanish arrived on the shores of South America. A story passed down through countless generations, it shows the legend of Naymlap, the fearless founder of a centuries old dynasty that ruled the Lambayeque Valley. Naymlap was a mysterious lord who arrived from the north with a vast fleet of totora ... morerafts carrying a huge entourage that included his chief wife. His personal guard of forty warriors and an embroider of his feathered shirts. Having come to shore at the mouth of a great river, the group walked inland and founded a settlement which came to dominate the surrounding lands. Throughout his long reign, the people enjoyed peace and prosperity. So popular was Naymlap that when his death finally came, it was kept secret by his attendants who feared the repercussions and they buried him in the same room where he had lived. To explain his mysterious disappearance, they claimed the revered old man had evaded death by learning to fly and gliding up to the heavens for an immortal existence. This theme is encapsulated in on the vessel. We see Naymlap riding atop the crest of a rainbow symbolising ritual flight and flanked by two attendants. He wears the crown and projecting ear ornamentation one associates with Lambayeque nobility. Meanwhile the row of birds running along the shoulder is likely an allegory of the heros flight into heaven. Colima Dog This is a wonderful Colima figural dog vessel. As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately two thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on ... moreits history or provenance. It was announced that the deceased owner was a world traveler and his treasures had been brought home from all of his travels. The auctioneer announced this as Aztec; however since I am not an expert, please make a judgement from the pics. The bowl measures 11 1/2" and 3 1/2" tall. There is one crack I recently found when I took it outside to take some natural light pictures. There are two holes in one of the head legs. But they look purposeful. It is a wonderful artifact and was professionally placed in a shadowbox in the 1950's based on the construction of the box. Vintage Mexican Art Pre-Columbian Style Mayan Snake Pottery Bowl Pipe Incense
This is a vintage piece that I obtained from an old importer in South Texas that was on his dusty back warehouse shelves. Great find. It is a three legged. Pre-columbian style pottery piece. Actual pre-columbian pieces are protected by the Mexican government. This is just a style- not actual pottery from that era. This one has a unique mayan head, snake legs and scroll work on the handles. Holes in the bowl indicate it was for smoking something. Large enough for incense. It measures 12" x 5" x 4 1/2" overall. The bowl itself is 5" diameter and 2 1/2" deep. Painted clay chalky pottery. It is in good shape with no chips or cracks.
