Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a Pre-Columbian terracotta Standing Female Figure. From the Colima culture, ... moreWest Mexico. The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. The famous mural artist Diego Rivera began his collection of Mexican pottery with small Colima figures- the collection later grew into a national treasure which was eventually housed in the Rivera Museum in Mexico City. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay. Our goal is to bring the same experience and excitement of collecting that we have been delivering in-person to collectors across the globe at Primitive in Chicago. Pre-Columbian Guami Indian from Panama Pottery Candle Holders
About 500 A.D. Volcan Baru in Panama erupted and blew 3000 feet off the top of the mountain. There was some evidence it also erupted around 1550 A.D. The Guami Indiams were indigenous to the area. These people vanished in this area at that time due to the volcanic eruption. These artifacts which mainly are candle holders were obtained by myself while in Panama in the early 2000's. There were excavated in burial grounds by the local people of Panama. The Indians would use these candles to signal one another across mountain peaks. They are very different and mostly resemble animals. This piece resembles a duck. There is no hole in the bottom of this piece as shown by the photo. It measures 5" high. 5" wide. We are not shipping internationally at this time.

Large Ancient Pre Columbian Nazca Pottery Jar - 250 AD
A well provenanced. Very large, artistic and vibrant ancient Peruvian Earthenware jug from the Nazca culture, dating to approximately 250- 540 A.D. The large ovoid vessel in the form of a rotund hunter. The piece with rounded base. Globular body and short cylindrical neck. The neck decorated with a human face, shown with almond shaped eyes, the nose and mouth modeled and the long black hair protruding from underneath a painted cap. The stylised hands of the figure appearing from underneath a decorative shawl. A particularly interesting and accomplished example of the ancient potters art. Here we see a large. Spherical vessel skillfully painted and modeled to adopt the form and character of a plump male. Remarkable use of perspective. The ancient Nazca culture. Located on the Southern coast of Peru, existed from 370 B.C. through to 540 A.D. ... moreThe period saw much development of the arts, perhaps most notably in the area of slip painting, as is evidenced by this piece. Ancient Peruvians left no written records, thus their material remains are the only existing link to this intriguing ancient culture. Height: 12 1/2 inches. Condition: Very good. Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Pottery Seated Female Fertility Figure - 100 BC
A high quality. Particularly vibrant ancient west Mexican Nayarit figure, dating to the proto-Classic period, around 100 BC- 100 AD. Sitting upon a two legged stool. The naked figure stares out into the distance through the hollow slits of her eyes, the mouth held open. She clutches her sides in the pose typical of Nayarit female figures, the gaunt features of the face contrasting with the broad body and exaggerated breasts. Her hair tied up into an elaborate coiffure, she wears three spools in each ear and a thick collar around the neck. This is not only an enchanting piece of pre-Columbian art. It tells the story of Nayarit ritual practices and traditional beliefs. We can see the notion of the earth as the great creator and sustainer of humanity, the fertility of the soil touched by the stool is conflated with the fertility of the woman ... moreseated upon it. This idea of shared fertility between the earth and female members of society is still held in some traditional South/Central American societies, where women alone appear in the fields to carry out the first planting of the season. For further reading on the subject. Please see: Townsend. R.F. ed. 1998. Ancient West Mexico: Art and Archaeology of the Unknown Past. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago. Height: 16 5/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. With encrustations, intact and unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the US collection of Harry and Elinor Lynn. Acquired from the Hokin Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida on the 9th January, 1975(the original invoice from this sale will be included to the new purchaser upon request) Mr Harry Lynn(1916– 2006) was perhaps best known as the owner of the Washington Coliseum when the Beatles performed their first U.S. concert there on the 11th of February 1964. Lynn was born in Kansas City but spent most of his childhood in Omaha. During World War II he joined the Army and was stationed in France and England. Moving to Washington D.C. in 1948. In late 1959 he purchased the building which would make his name. Over the years he

TERRACOTTA POTTERY IN PRE-COLUMBIAN CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA by Alexander Von Wuthenau. Greystone Press, NY, 1965. 350 figures are illustrated in color and black-and-white in this scholarly text on terracotta pottery in pre-Columbian Central and South America. For three thousand years, were fashioned by the different peoples of Mesoamerica. This book reviews the history and evolution of this fascinating pottery. 7” x 9.2” hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 203 pages. Published Pre Columbian Chimu Pottery Spouted Bottle - 700 AD
A superb. Well provenanced, published ancient Pre-Columbian ritual libation vessel, from the Chimu culture, dating to 700- 1470 A.D. A fascinating ancient vessel of ovoid form. Surmounted by two tapered spouts. The piece decorated on its shoulders with moulded depictions of animals and whorls on a dotted or stippled ground. Plant forms, perhaps maize or pacae leaves lie around the neck. This piece was once thought to be a product of the Patavilca. However similar shaped vessels with designs of this type have been excavated in the Moche River Valley and are now known to date to the Middle Chimu period. The Chimú are perhaps best known for their distinctive black glazed pottery. Strongly influenced by their predecessors, the Moche. Examples of their enchanting ceramics can be found on display in the world's top museums. MEXICO: The state was home to a number of pre-Hispanic cultures as part of Western Mexico. Archeological evidence dates human occupation of the area as far back as 1500 BCE. With sites here contemporary with San Lorenzo on the Gulf Coast and Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico. One period of the area’s development is called the Los Ortices era which began around 500 BCE. During this time the elements which characterize the pre-Hispanic peoples of Colima appear such as shaft tombs and a distinctive ceramic style called“rojo bruñido” or burnished red. The next phase called Comala, covers the time period from around 100 to 600 CE, centered on a site of the same name. Comala people would perfect burnished red pottery and develop representations of people and animals with skill and fluid lines. The best known of these figures are known as the“fattened dogs” The Comala site shows influence from Teotihuacan. Around 500 CE, another site in Armería developed along the river of the same name. The Chanal site was active from the 6th to the 15th centuries and was the main culture
Mesoamerican Pottery~Unglazed Tooled Clay Tripod Vessel~Pre Columbian Relic
Unglazed clay vessel. Meso-American. Pre Columbian relic. As you can see it is quite chipped around the rim. Looks to have never been cleaned, see pictures. It is unglazed clay which is heavily tooled with 2 warrior heads on either side. The tripod vessel has what looks to be frogs heads as feet. At 2 levels on the container there are darker colored bands which encircle the vessel. 7" tall. 2 3/4" diameter at rim. Approximately 6 inch at the widest point. The rim is taper and fits well in the hand as for drinking. At the estate sale the woman told me the known history on this vessel as stated: Her uncle had given it to her before he had passed away many years ago. She is in her mid 70's. He had told her to cherish it as it was very old and valuable. He was an archeologist and was working in Mexico and wrote a book on his encounters ... moreof the area. Unfortunately I did not acquire his name nor the region of Mexico. She had imagined that he had un-earthed the object but she did not know for sure. As is sale and will be insured for the final value. Double boxed with lots of packing. I see this as an authentic piece and would appreciate any input from my fellow e-bay enthusiasts.

FINE PRE-COLUMBIAN ANASAZI PUEBLO CORRUGATED BOWL PREHISTORIC POTTERY 1250 AD.
Estate purchase. Tucson, Arizona. Authentic(fully guaranteed) p re-historic corrugated bowl. Most likely Anasazi. But possibly Salado culture. Exception ally fine corrugated design on this good sized 8" diameter bowl with black interior. The bowl's height is 3¼ inches. There is a very small amount of resto ration. Less than 2% The restoration is very well done. One side of the bowl's vertical wall was broken and has been glued. A small area consisting of 3 pieces appear to have some plaster applied on the inside in order to smooth out the spaces between them. However the pieces themselves are the actual pottery pieces a nd not plaster replacements as can be seen by examining the outer surface. In total the restoration is very minor and in no way detracts from the beauty of this fine example of prehistoric craft. I have photographed ... moreboth sides of the affected area and we lcome any requests for more information. I can 100% guarantee the authenticity of this bowl. The corrugat ed design is fine and even and adds a wonderful tactile feel to the bowl. Please click on the shipping tab and enter your zip code to calculate shipping cost.
