NEW Origins of Britain Paleolithic Bronze + Iron Ages Celt Early History England
TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Britain Before the Conquest: The Origins of Britain by Lloyd and Jennifer Laing. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 208 pages. Publisher: Routledge& Kegan Paul; 1980) This book. Chronologically the first of the five-volume“Britain Before the Conquest” ... moreseries, follows the path of man’s occupation of Britain from the scattered pockets of habitation in the earliest Paleolithic period through to his growing domination of the landscape and his capacity to mold his environment evident in the late Bronze Age. Although remains from the earliest period are relatively scarce, the early antiquaries and archaeologists who began to investigate the monuments and sites made confident predictions, usually entirely fanciful, as to the nature and habits of the earliest inhabitants of Britain. The authors show how, as the techniques and methods of archaeology were introduced, these illusions were gradually dispersed. Among the many subjects which the book discusses in detail are the extent of knowledge of astronomy and mathematics in Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain. And the extent to which the pattern of life in Iron Age Britain was already set by the end of the preceding Bronze Age. As with the other titles in the series, The Origins of Britain” is concerned with the remains and artifacts, and the social and cultural changes, of the period. The authors survey the great variety of both stone and metal objects, and discuss the most signific
4 Paleolithic Aterian and 6 Mesolithic Sahara Neolithic stone tools
Lot Description: This is a group of 5 good Aterian tools and Mesolithic unifacial blades found in the Sahara desert. In the region of Morocco. The 5 Aterian tools are very old, a good 30,000 years old and quite possibly up to 50,000 years before present. They are the first tools with a stem for hafting and were probably used for cutting and scrapping of hides. The tips of these points are typically worked around rather than coming to a sharpe tip necessary for a spear point. It could be that these tools started as a spear point and were later re-purposed into hafted scrappers. The rtips dp show that they were worked into the configuration rather than broken. Whatever the case they are interesting relics with thick patination and are sand polished from sitting in wind-blown deserts for many thousands of years. The unifacial Mesolithic blades ... moreare of a much later time probably about 8.000 years ago and were the main tool technology proior to the Neolithic era. The Aterian tools range from approximately 1 1/2 inches(38 mm) Up to 2 3/8th inches(62 mm) The unifacial blades range fromfrom approximately 1 9/16th inches(40 mm) Up to 2 5/8th inches(68 mm) The condition is good. There are ancient dings to a few of these, as can be expected with working tools; most are complete. See picture for details. The color in hand. Is better than the picture indicates. The natural light somehow washes out the color or maybe it's my photography skills. I need a light box! These relics are representative of everyday tools. Many of these tools were used until they could no longer function well because they were to small to re-sharpen at which point they were discarded others were lost in the hunt. Background information on the Sahara Neolithic(I am working on a paper for the earlier time periods) is provided with my 2-page essay on the subject. Which will be included. My auctions feature low starting bids and low. At cost or below shipping. Your satisfaction is guaranteed OR no hassle money back. Payment Options: PayPal. Pleas
35 Sahara Neolithic relics - tools, celt, beads, and 1 paleolithic tool.
This group of 35 Sahara Neolithic relics. PLUS one Paleolithic Aterian tool, is composed of diverse types of relics, which were discovered on ancient habitation sites deep in the western Sahara desert, mostly in the vicinity of northern Muaratania/Mali but also includes two trianglar'Eiffel Tower' poinst from Algeria. This group consist of several type and subtypes of projectile points from varying periods of the Neolithic era. Including ovate, stemmed, triangular, and unifacial tool forms. In all there are 22 Neolithic stone projectile points and tools including: two early unifacial tools(bottom row, right side) Also from the Neolithic era are 10 hard-stone beads(quartz disc beads) two pottery beads(Mauratania) and one hard stone celt. At the upper right you will see an Aterian tool from the Sahara. This is the earliest known type ... moreof stone tool with a stem for hafting. It was probably used to serve as a knife/scrapper. This tool is VERY old with weathered features and deep black and orange patina. The point has been worked into a shape for cutting/scrapping and was probably a hafted scrapper rather than a spear point(possibly re-purposed) This type of tool was used during a wet period in the Sahara 40,000 to 30,000 years ago; this relic is 1 5/8th inches(42 mm) long. The Aterian culture disapperaed from the Sahara about 30.0000 years ago. During subsequent wet period, which correspond to the Ice Ages in northern Europe later cultures re-pepolulated areas of the Sahara leaving different tool types in the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras. This is one of the more diverse offering of ancient Sahara relics you will find in one lot. The shortest point is 7/8th inch(22 mm) The longest tool. Is unifacial and is 2 inches(50 mm) long. The celt is 1 5/th inch(42 mm) long. Heel to bit. It has good form with crsip angle and blade. Th ese are everyday work tools and adornments used. And lost or discarded by our Neolithic and earlier hunter-gatherer ancestors. They are all honest, authentic relics in good shape, som

5 Paleolithic Aterian and 6 Mesolithic Sahara Neolithic stone tools
Lot Description: This is a group of 5 Aterian paleolithic tools and 6 Mesolithic unifacial blades found in the Sahara desert. In the region of Morocco. The Aterian tools are very old, a good 30,000 years old and quite possibly up to 50,000 years before present. They are the first tools EVER with a stem for hafting and were probably used for cutting and scrapping of hides. The tips of these points are typically worked around rather than coming to a sharpe tip necessary for a spear point. It could be that these tools started as a spear point and were later re-purposed into hafted scrappers. Whatever the case they are interesting relics with thick patination and are sand polished from sitting in wind-blown deserts for many thousands of years. The unifacial Mesolithic blades are of a much later time. About 8,000 years ago, prior to the Neolithic ... moreera. The Aterian tools range from 1 5/8th inch(40 mm) to 2 5/8th inches(60 mm) The unifacial blades range from 1 3/4th inch(45 mm) to 2 1/16th inches(65 mm) The condition is good. There are ancient dings to a few of these, as can be expected with working tools; most are complete. See picture for details. The color in hand. Is better than the picture indicates. The natural light somehow washes out the color or maybe it's my photography skills. Amazing Pointed Quartz Handaxe, Stone Age Paleolithic Lower Acheulian 600.000 BC
Amazing Pointed Quartz Handaxe. Stone Age Paleolithic Lower Acheulian 600.000 BC Description Type: one-sided pointed handaxe on pebble. Paleolithic Period. Industry: Lower Paleolithic. Lower Acheulian. Dating: archaeological research in Western Europe proved that the European continent has been conquested as early as 1.3 to 1,1 Mio years(finds of Atapuerca/ Spain) Early Pleistocene. The assignment of the oldest human finds at Atapuerca to a particular early human species as Homo erectus or Homo antecessor is still controversial. As controversially discussed is the earliest date of permanent colonization of Europe, and good dating of the high gravel terraces of southern French rivers is still lacking. So we suggest an estimated time frame of approx. 800.000 to 400.000 BC. Description: Size: length 10.6 cm, width 6,7 cm thickness 2,6 cm, weight ... more260 grams, Shape. Retouch: an amazing handaxe on flat elongated pebble. It is a small. Almost delicate tool, especially in comparison to others from the same site. Only the most necessary retouch was made until a useable handaxe was ready. It is the distal part of both lateral edges and the tip which were retouched on one face, Raw-material: a pebble out of gray-green quartzite. The most common and typical raw-material at all sites on the Garonne terraces, Preservation: very well: no modern damages. The surface is somewhat weathered. But flake scars are well defined. Additional Information. Literature: The pebble tools found on the high gravel terraces of the Garonne. Tarn and Aveyron river are among the earliest tools found in Europe. Lit: A. Tavoso, Le Paléolithique supérieur et moyen du Haut-Languedoc, Paris 1978. Origin. Site: high gravel terrace of the Garonne. South of Toulouse, southern France. Excellent Almond Shaped Quartzite Handaxe Paleolithic Lower Acheulian 500.000 BC
Excellent Almond Shaped Quartzite Handaxe Paleolithic Lower Acheulian 500.000 BC Description Type: almond shaped handaxe on flake. Paleolithic Period. Industry: Lower Palaeolithic. Description: Size: length 13.1 cm, width 7,3 cm, thickness 3,0 cm, weight ... more340 grams, Shape. Retouch: an excellent very thin handaxe which looks at first glance as if it was made on tabular raw-material. But the cortical area at the butt proves that it is made on flake struck from a pebble. Both faces are retouched: the one shown first presents broad facial retouch as well as finer lateral retouch at the edges. The other face has a large flat area in the center which is not cortex, but nonetheless the natural surface of the pebble. Finer edge flaking is made at the edges, the tip and the butt. Raw-material: a flake out of gray quartzite. The most common raw-material on the Garonne terraces, Preservation: very well. The surface is somewhat weathered. But flake scars are well defined. No modern damages as far as can be seen, Additional Information. Literature: The pebble tools found on the high gravel terraces of the Garonne. Tarn and Aveyron river are among the earliest tools found in Europe. Lit: A. Tavoso, Le Paléolithique supérieur et moyen du Haut-Languedoc, Paris 1978. Origin. 15.000Y.O:GREAT CORE + FLAKES MAGDALENIAN C EUROPEAN STONE AGE PALEOLITHIC FLINT
EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description European Palaeolithic Magdalenian Culture. Dating around 13000 bc. Late Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherer communities occupying much of northern and western Europe during the period 16000–10000 bc. The classic Magdalenian is concentrated in southern France and northern Spain. But it can also be recognized extending northwards into Britain and eastwards into the North European Plain in Germany, Poland, and as far as the Sudost River in Russia. The name is taken from the type-site rock-shelter of La Madeleine in the Dordogne Valley of southwest France. The Magdalenian stone industry is characterized by small geometrically shaped implements, especially triangles and semilunar blades, that were probably set into bone or antler handles for use, burins, scrapers, borers, ... morebacked bladelets, and shouldered and leaf-shaped projectile points. Bone was used extensively to make wedges, adzes, hammers, spear heads with link shafts, barbed points and harpoons, eyed needles, and jewellery. Their economy was based on reindeer hunting and fishing, and there is evidence of occupied caves as well as open sites. Some of the finest cave art in France and northern Spain can be attributed to these communities, as can a great many decorated bone and ivory pieces. The Magdalenian followed the Solutrean and Aurignacian and was succeeded by the simplified Azilian. Magdalenian culture disappeared as the cool. Near-glacial climate of the late Devensian Stage warmed and the animal herds the communities depended upon became scarce. Microliths" A term common to a number of small artefacts of flint. Differing considerably in form and presumably put to many different uses. A feature common to them all is that they are made of micro-blades or, and especially in the earliest cultures. Of small, narrow flakes; Next. One or more edges are shaped by blunting from one side. They are called right or left microliths. According to whether the unblunted ecge lies to the right

From Free Wikipedia: Vogelherd Cave. Vogelherdhöhlen Listed as the Southern entrance. The left cave entrance is the big Vogelherd Cave. The right cave is just a small shelter, cut off from the main passage by a roof collapse many years ago. Photo: Jochen Duckeck Text below from: Delporte(1993) This huge cave is located in Stetten ob Lonetal(Lone Valley. Württemberg) It was excavated in 1931 by Gustav Riek, who detailed an impressive stratigraphy, generally separated from each other by sterile archaeological layers. He attributed the levels to the Upper Acheulean(layer 8) Mousterian layer 7) the middle and upper Aurignacian(layers 6 and ... more4) the Magdalenian(layers 3 and 2) and the Neolithic. The material collected during the excavation is kept at the Institute of Prehistory at the University of Tübingen. Riek published his findings. Which are supplemented by a recent analysis by D. de Sonneville-Bordes, used to specify the nature of three Aurignacian layers(layers 6 to 4) 6. This lower layer is poor in tools. And has a few rough Mousterian looking blades and points. Riek placed this layer in the early Aurignacian(Aurignacian-Früh) 5. the middle layer belongs to the typical Aurignacian. With points of bone with a split base, Aurignacian blades, rare keeled and muzzle scrapers and a significant number of burins, a majority of burins on truncation, a character which locates this in the Aurignacian of southwestern France. 4. the upper layer. Although it had one or two Gravettian points and an atypical pointe à cran or shouldered point, and although the split base points are not found in this layer, nevertheless belongs to the typical Aurignacian, with a normal development of nosed scrapers, but with a significant decrease in the proportion of chisels.
