Very Fine Quality. Ottoman Empire Solid Silver Filigree and Copper Basket. c1860. Features the highest quality intricate solid silver and copper filigree work. It is Ottoman Turkish rather than Chinese or Persian filigree and dates to the mid to late 19th century. The most delicate filigree seems to be solid silver and the thicker. Structural wires are a high grade copper. The basket is large with a diameter of 217mm or 8 and 1/2 inches. It stands on 4 filigree feet. It has losses to the filigree in several areas and is everso slightly out of shape but really it is an amazing survivor given how delicate it is. Essentially it is a very fine and extremely rare example of Ottoman metalwork. Turkish Ottoman Chased Sterling Silver Vase or Spoon Holder with 3 Graces or Figural Ladies Dancing with Silver Plate Liner Makers Mark G.Manousso Presented is a beautifully detailed cutout& chased silver Spoon Holder or Vase with the 3 graces on the sides and cherubs faces on three raised feet surround with a silver plate monogramed liner or cup. This vase is marked just beneath one of the three graces though it is difficu lt to read due to being stamped over a zig-zag decoration. I believe it to be the mark for G.Manousso. I have posted a picture of my research in the photos above. This item has a beautiful overlay cast detailing around the top and bottom where the three feet curl out slightly with no wobble. The silver plate liner has a great period script mixed monogram on one side and a concaved bottom with only a few dents visible ... moreseen from inside and a slightly out of round rim. The surround is in excellent condition with no dens or dings and only a few minor scratches from gentle use and care. This is a fantastic piece with excellent detail. Although uprisings among the Greek inhabitants of the island of Crete had been occurring for years. An outright revolt began on May 14, 1866, when a group of Greek citizens demanded lower taxes and changes in the court system. Although their demands were met, Ottoman troops were mobilized immediately, expecting outright rebellion. This became a self fulfilling prophecy, and fighting broke out between Cretan Greeks and Turkish soldiers. Thousands of Greek volunteers arrived on the island from the mainland, and the Greek government appealed to the Western powers to intervene on their behalf. Britain and Austria, however, were opposed to intervention for the time being.
