The ring is constructed by the very simple method of joining the bands by brazing both ends to a bezel. This was a rather primitive technique as opposed to rings which were cast in one piece, bands and bezel unified and not created separately, much like the style of a contemporary ring. The bezel either mimics a flower blossom of some sort, with a round center surrounded by a scalloped, wavy perimeter. The band as you can see is very simple, very much like a contemporary“solitaire” style ring. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship, and is entirely intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The ring was not originally recovered with a gemstone. And it is impossible to tell whether it was originally set with a gemstone; although in all likelihood it was not originally created with a gemstone. As you can see both the marquise-shaped bezel as well as the bands are heavily and elaborately engraved. Though not done in a precious metal, this was nonetheless a costly and high-quality ring. As mentioned the ring does show some moderate overall wear, but of course you must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the purchased. And without any regard to twenty-first century posterity, that precisely what happened! The original medieval owner of this ring wore it, enjoyed it, and probably never could have in his most delusional moment ever dreamed that fifty generations later the ring would still exist. There is some extremely light porosity(fine surface pitting caused by prolonged burial in soil) discernible overall. Evidence that the ring spent many centuries buried in the earth. However typically small metal artifacts such as these are grossly disfigured by corrosion. The"bezel" or face of the ring is in the shape of a royal crown common to the region– very elaborate, and not unlike many of the royal crowns of Medieval and Renaissance Eastern Europe. The bands bear a pattern as well- close examination will actually reveal that the bands are actually stamped– which helps date the artifact beyond the fall of the Western Roman Empire. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship. The construction of the ring is of the more archaic style, characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This as opposed to the more modern style of construction prevalent in the later Roman Empire(and in modern times) whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(cast from a single piece of metal) It’s quite obvious that the ring was worn in life. The bezel is beautifully designed and sculpted to resemble Gabriel kneeling(facing the viewer) holding a scroll on which the words AVE MARIA would have been. The back of the ring is a Fede(clasped hands) design denoting this ring would have been given in friendship or betrothal. The shank is engraved with cruciform panels. Very Rare Medieval Abbots Silver Gilt Rock Crystal Reliquary Ring c. 1200 AD
Silver Gilt Ring found in Abbots Tomb Furness Abbey Cumbria(click image for more details) On offer is this superb silver gilt and rock crystal ring dating to the 13th- 14th century AD. It is of the type worn by Abbots as a badge of office. Usually given by the Bishops upon their ordination. The bezel is of simple box form that holds an excellent quality rock crystal. The transparant crystal would have acted as a window to magnify whatever sacred relic contained inside. It appears that inside the bezel, there is some form of plaster or clay(that has both preserved the shape of the bezel, and preserved the contents) Parts of the silver sheet bezel have worn through over the years, but are stable. The shank has been restored where it joins with the bezel, with the loss of one of the little trefoil decorations. This is a very nice metal detected RING BROOCH from the 14/15th century. the little lable says it was found in Lincolnshire. and possibly French. well it could be. but these were also made in England as well during this period. As you can see it has partial gilding remaining on both sides and unusually it is decorated on both sides as well. The pin goes diagonal. making it a sort of diamond shape when worn.the pin would have originally hinged out. but alas it no longer does this. it has been GLUED in the centre of the pin too. overall nice condition.it is 2.5cm x 2.5cm x 3mm deep. Beautiful Medieval Gold & Sapphire Stirrup Ring 15th Century Agincourt c. 1415
On offer this week is a superb and rare medieval gold stirrup ring. Set with a lovely blue sapphire. This ring dates to the late 14th or early 15th century(c. 1380- 1430 AD) we can accurately date it through the shape of the bezel(with a four claw type setting) which was fashionable around 1400 AD. Such a ring would have once belonged to a Knight or very rich merchant. Originally this ring was found in Northern France though likely belonged to an Englishman(either serving during the Hundred Years war) or by an English merchant trading within the Anglo Gallic territories- most of Northern France at this time was occupied as English territory. One can only imagine what wonderful sites this ring once witnessed, or the brutality and carnage during the Hundred Years War. Around the time this ring was made, the English(lead by King Henry V) defeated ... morethe French at the famous battle of Agincourt 1415. Much of the gold and jewels plundered in the aftermath, found its way into gold jewellery and coinage. It is in excellent condition for an excavated ring. Though does have some small nicks due to the softness of the gold. The crosshatch decoration on the band is quite worn in places, with the band being slightly mishapen. The genuine sapphire gemstone is a really nice blue colour, though has a surface crack that is not deep but likely due to an impact during its long life. The gold has been tested to around 22k or slightly higher. A great investment piece of historical jewellery from the time of King Henry V and the battle of Agincourt.
