Ancient Near Eastern Persian Luristan Bronze Age Ceremonial Axe - 900 BC
An elegant. Rare and well preserved ancient Luristan late Bronze Age pick axe, dating to approximately 900 BC. The axe is of classic Luristan form; with straight robust shaft and blunt edge. Cylindrical socket and rounded projection at the back. Indentations and remnants of the original wraps can be seen on the shaft, an extremely rare occurrence. Blunt ended axes such as this weapon were designed to cause depressed fractures and deep lacerations to the head. Though this piece adheres to that design, it was probably originally for ceremonial use. This striking weapon was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as mercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. Bronze with an encrusted green ancient patina. The form is quite abstracted and stylized. There is a thick cylindrical. Hollow bottom to attach the staff or sword onto and a hole where it may have been pinned into the sword or staff. The hollow tube is encrusted with soil on the interior. The knobbed form is decorated with rope-like sculptural designs giving the appearance that the pommel is tied in place onto the sword or staff. It has a classic and very modernistic look, although it was made over 2,500 years ... moreago. AGE: Circa 1500 BC to 500 BC. CONDITION: Good archeologically found condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Thick green encrusted encrustation overall. No apparent losses to this finial or pommel, although it was part of a staff, knife, or sword that is no longer present. This piece does not presently have a display stand but it would be worth having one made. HISTORY: This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. 100% Authentic. This bronze spearhead from the Luristan region of the Bronze Age is similar in design to what was used by the Roman legions. A weapon such as this would have been carried by foot or mounted soldiers and either thrown or used in stabbing attacks on enemy ranks. The attachment band is intact which is somewhat rare as most have already split along the seam over time. Even more unique and rare is that the nail used to attach the head to the shaft still remains in its original position(see image) Some edge loss at bottom of one side of blade otherwise solid with nice patina on shaft.
