WWI trench art letter-opener in the form of an Islamic scimitar sword.
FREE POSTAGE ON THIS ITEM Offered for sale is this very interesting piece of WWI trench art in the form of an Islamic sword(scimitar) It measures approximately 22.5cm. It is in very good overall condition. Not least considering it is almost 100 years old. Two things make this particular item much more interesting than the average trench art find. First of all the‘sword blade’ itself is personalised. Having been engraved by the soldier in question on both sides. On one side it reads“ Souvenir from France” while on the other. It says“ Harry to Jane” This blade section of the sword was probably cut from a spent shell casing. Second. And perhaps most interesting of all, the spent cartridge case recovered by Harry. And later used by him to make the sword handle for this piece of trench art, originally belonged to the enemy, for it is a 7.92 cartridge, ... morefirst fired in anger from a German Mauser rifle. The spent cartridge markings reveal that it is dated March 1916, that it was manufactured by Pirotecnico Di Capua, and that it is type S67. Making it a patrone or spitzer rifle bullet, with 67% brass in its alloy case. So here we have an enemy German rifle cartridge case and bullet. Recovered on the Somme battlefield almost certainly by a British serviceman, who later crafted it into the handle of an Islamic scimitar(letter opener? for his loved one back home in Britain. All in all a remarkable Anglo-German piece of WWI social history. Did Harry survive the Great War? Who was Jane and where in Britain did she live? Further research would possibly reveal the answer to such questions.

This interesting Manding broadsword is mounted with a 84 cm long. 4.5 cm wide Solingen-made blade with three narrow fullers starting at the ricasso and running past the forte. Sword is almost 1 meter long overall. The hilt is wrapped in oiled cloth. Scabbard is wood, covered with three sections of tooled raw-hide and two sections of vellum. Sword dates to the late 19th-early 20th c. Manding swords of this vintage are quite uncommon. Most of the examples encountered on today's market date from the later part of the 20th c. making this sword a desirable piece for a collector of ethnographic weapons.
