TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Ancient Egyptian Literature: ... moreA Book of Readings by Miriam Lichtheim– Volume II: The New Kingdom. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 239 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

Mediaeval Islamic Seljuk Period Pottery Oil Lamp, C.1200 A.D.
Mediaeval Islamic Seljuk Period Pottery Oil Lamp. C.1200 A.D. Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Mediaeval Islamic Seljuk Period Pottery Oil Lamp. C.1200 A.D. This rare pottery oil lamp originates from the Middle East. Probably the region of modern day Iran, and dates to the Seljuk period, around 1200 A.D. With a tin-glazed turquoise glaze. It is of a very typical form for the time– please see below for a couple of examples: Relatively little survives of ceramics from this time. And this is a highly decorative example with a good amount of surface glaze remaining. However, it has suffered a ham-fisted restoration attempt, with all the glued joins being uneven and poorly done, a possible cut-down of the stem, a chip to the base and top rims, and very uneven wear and tear with the top part in a better state of preservation ... morethan the lower, plus there is all-over crazing and wear to the glaze– hence, the price is lower than usual for one of these rare and early lamps. OLD Muslim Islamic Pottery Persian Turkish Tile Plaque Panel Frieze Qajar Iznik
This listing is for an old antique 16.4" square plaque composed of four 8.2" approx. terracotta tiles which form a circular medallion when assembled. The reverse of each tile shows orange terra cotta clay with an Arabic mark or signature. There is residue from the previous installment on the back of the tiles. The glaze is crazed. And shows some wear. there are a few nicks here and there, and one corner chip has been glued back on. Overall the ceramic is intact with most losses on the reverse from removal. Some grout remains on a few edges. The man that I purchased the tiles from said that he had pulled them from a house- and the owners of the house had brought the plaque with them to the United States from a Mosque"somewhere" If I knew where the Mosque was. There would be a much more concise title to this listing. I am ... moresure that if you are reading this, you probably know the specific origin of the tiles better than I. Early Islamic Pottery Oil Lamp CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Early Islamic. Palestine DATE: Circa 700-900 CE DIMENSIONS: 8.8 cm(3.46 in. long DESCRIPTION: Intact. An early Islamic mould made oil lamp from Palestine. Formed of slightly pinkish buff clay. This upper surface is boldly decorated with a pattern in high relief, dividing the surface into quadrants, each of which is defined by deep ridges and raised lines. The high relief channel encloses the central fill hole and continues to the nozzle. A small spike handle rises from ... morethe rear. A hefty example of a more uncommon early Islamic type. PROVENANCE: Ex US private collection formed in the 1960s while living in the Middle East. COMPARISONS: For this general class of lamps. Antique Islamic Ceramic Near Eastern Nishapur Pottery Bowl - 900 AD
A rare. Vibrant and beautiful Islamic Nishapur painted bowl, dating to approximately 900 AD. Lavishly decorated. Constructed from pale earthenware and standing on a circular flat foot, the bowl with steep walls. At the centre lies a beautiful abstract swirl of green, yellow and black. The imagery on bowls of this type is thought to have derived from metalwork of the Sasanian period(third to seventh century) in Iran. The distinctive ceramics produced in Nishapur were traded around the region. And have been found at Herat, Merv, and Samarqand. The excavators had been drawn to the city because of its fame in the medieval period, when it flourished as a regional capital. Nishapur was for centuries an important political and cultural center: a seat of governmental power in eastern Islam, a dwelling place for diverse ethnic and religious groups, ... morea trading stop on commercial routes from Transoxiana and China, Iraq and Egypt. Situated on a fertile plain near the foot of Mount Binalud and on an important strategic position on the Silk route, Nishapur was a bustling centre for trade in antiquity, famous for its beautiful ceramics, such as the present example. Diameter: 5 3/4 inches. Condition: Good. Restored from large fragments. Beautiful preservation of the painted decoration. Provenance: Formerly in the possession of Friedrich Joseph Amon(1913-1977) Mr. Amon was a prominent collector of Islamic ceramics and acquired the majority of his large collection whilst on professional and private trips in the Middle East during the 1960’s– 1970’s. Antique Islamic Nishapur calligraphic pottery bowl Persia 10th Century
14 cm diameter. Made in Persia in the 10th century with pseudo calligraphy to well. Broken and restored from approximately 6 fragments with overpainting to cracks and one very minor area of restoration approximately 3x1 cm. One minor chip to rim approximately 0.5x0.5 cm. Not bad for a bowl that is over 1000 years old! Most of the bowls listed on eBay of this type are fake but this is certainly not. I am very happy to accept a return if another expert contradicts this.
Superb Collection Of 3 Antique Islamic Glazed Pottery Bowls - Persian Beautiful
I am very excited to be listing three bowls out of my own private collection. As you can see from pictures it is a beautiful and very striking collection. A very rare antique set. That just stands out in any home. Although these pieces are antique and interesting historic pottery pieces they also fit into any modern home, with muted colours and designs I believe these pieces to be Islamic/Persian. All three with a unique glaze and patterning- one having a turquoise glaze. All three having fantastic decoration. You will see from two of the bowls there are three small dots inside the bowl where the glaze has not held- I am told this is due to the firing technique used) All three bowls are antique and very old. They have signs of age but I think this only adds to there charm. I believe these pieces to be very rare and collectable. Each bowl ... moresize approximately- 9" diameter x 4" high Overall good condition considering their age- there is a certain rustic quality anyway. One bowl has a crack- I have taken lots of photos. But please ask if you need anything more. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us we will be happy to help. Through honest business practices, inexpensive quality gently-loved items, and superior customer service. Please let us know what we can do to earn your customer satisfaction and loyalty. WE ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL APPRAISERS AND EVERYTHING STATED IN THIS AUCTION COMES DIRECTLY FROM OUR CONSIGNOR AND/OR OUR OWN INDEPENDENT RESEARCH ONLINE OF ITEMS SIMILAR IN APPEARANCE AND CONDITION. You are bidding on a RARE piece of Middle Eastern history. This pottery vessel is an incredible representation of the cultural. Artistic, an anthropological development of ancient Islamic Persia, now modern Iran. This clay pot shows the perfection that early Persia(Iran) attained ... morein glaze development: making up paste mixtures of soda. Quartz powder, and coloring oxide to brush or paint onto a shaped vessel/jug. Our consignor purchased this gorgeous piece of art history in a bazaar in Western Iran in 1961 while her husband was stationed there for employment with ARAMCO. We are not professional appraisers but our online research about glazing and ceramics development in that area found other similar earthenware jars that dated it possibly as early as the 800 AD(9 th c) to 1200 AD(13 th c) The greenish blue tint of the glaze may be due to added iron from clay or sand in that area of the Middle East. The remaining portions of the glaze are most apparent at the opening of the vessel and along the interior walls of the vessel. We have no knowledge of how to properly clean/care for antiques. So this pottery has not, and will not, be cleaned in any way externally or internally. It will arrive in the exact condition we received it which is as shown in our auction pictures taken 2/4/15. We leave the responsibility of cleaning exclusively to the winning Buyer. EMAIL ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BID! This irreplaceable piece of history will be shipped well-pa
