Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. Publisher: Random House; 1968) In this dramatic study of the beginnings of European history Jacquetta Hawkes considers the culture of Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece. Finding in their union the source of Classical Greek culture. The extraordinary discoveries of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos and of Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae are part of the theme, which touches on the Homeric epics, the fall of Troy, and the legend of the Minotaur. The Cretan bull-leapers, the snake goddesses, the gold“mask of Agamemnon” and many other works of art are illustrated and interpreted. The essentially feminine character of Minoan Crete. With its palaces and gardens and its exquisite paintings, sculptures and ceramics, joins with the essentially masculine vigor of the Mycenaean kingdoms in the splendor of Bronze Age Greece. The poetry of Homer is seen as an element of continuity between this legendary period, which saw the dawn of the gods of Greece, and the golden age of Classical Greece, which witnessed the dawn of our own era. Profusely illustrated with nearly two hundred color and monochrome photographs by the brilliant Greek photographer Dimitrios Harrissiadis, Dawn of the Gods” is an important book of profound interest as well as one of striking be

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Splendid. Delicate, Brightly ... moreColored 3,000 Year Old Ancient Egyptian Faience Disc Beads on 14kt French Hook Earrings. CLASSIFICATION: Eighteen Ancient Egyptian silica ceramic/glass(faience” primitive silica disc beads. Contemporary french hooks and straight pins. ATTRIBUTION: Ancient Egypt. 20th Dynasty, about 11th century B.C. SIZE: Faience disc beads are between two and five millimeters in diameter; and between one and two diameters in thickness. CONDITION: Excellent. Unbroken beads. Brightly colored, with intact and thick glaze, well preserved. DETAIL: A pair of earrings necklace composed of bright colored ancient Egyptian beads constructed of faience. A primitive silica ceramic, and constructed of 14kt gold fill french hooks and straight pins. These brightly colored faience beads are quite uncommon– not the ordinary dull tan or brown color of ordinary uncolored crushed silica. We had a very small quantity of these beads available to us. We mounted the beads onto high quality– not cheap gold plated– rather high quality french hooks. This is first-quality jewelry designed to last years and years. Not cheap costume jewelry. If you prefer, we could remount the faience beads onto sterling silver french hooks. CONSTRUCTION: Faience. A primitive form of ceramic, was the ancient forerunner of modern glass, and was used by the Ancient Egyptians as far back as 3000 B.C. to fashion various amulets, beads, and other items of personal adornment. Most amulet/necklaces were both worn on a daily basis for protection, as well as buried with the dead to afford protection in the journey from this life to the next. Some bead necklaces were purely items of personal adornment, as these might have been so worn. Faience was produced by crushing quartz mixed with copper, and made into a paste. The paste was then placed in a mold, and then fired. The quartz would fuse, and the copper would give the resu

The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity by Carsten Peter Thiede. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 256 pages. Publisher: Palgrave ... morefor St. Martin’s Press; 2001) Carsten Peter Thiede’s bestseller. Eyewitness to Jesus” written with journalist Matthew d’Ancona, established him as one of the leading figures on the history and texts of the first century. Now in this controversial new book, Thiede focuses on what are perhaps the most enigmatic ancient documents ever found; the Dead Sea Scrolls. Drawing upon his own pioneering methods in restoring the scrolls, Thiede reveals that the Essene Library represented by the scrolls demonstrates that the first Christians were essentially a Jewish movement, not a radically new and fundamentally different religion. This perspective clearly has major implications. It affects both how we view the scrolls and it changes how we consider the history of first-century Christianity. Unraveling the complete history of the scrolls since their discovery in 1947. Thiede places them in the context of what has previously been unknown about the Essene community at Qumram. His identification of scroll fragments from Mark’s Gospel and Paul’s first letter to Timothy indicates that such Jewish-Christian writings were written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Moreover. It also suggests that the Essene community viewed the early Christians as fellow Jews, whose provocative ideas about the true Messiah they wanted to scrutinize. Eye-opening and stimulating, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity” reveals for the first time the fruits of much painstaking and original research. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Since their discoveries in 1947. The Dead Sea Scrolls have been a source of constant controversy. Scholars still argue over the meaning of the fragmentary texts; especially what they say ab
