This pottery is identified as a Nupe vessel. The Igbo people have also produced similar vessels. This crafted clay vessel was served as a container for water or other beverage. It comes with its base made out of leaves. Number about 350.000 the Nupe have along standing reputation as makers of fine pottery and ceramic objects. Since they are mostly Muslim, their vessels almost always feature lovely incised decoration, without human images. Exceptionally, this one has an abstract or schematic human face.This could be seen as an influence from the Nupe neighbors or other groups from Nigeria such as the Tiv and the Ga'anda living in the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. The Tiv are a large group of more than one million people living in North-east Nigeria. They are famous for their wooden carvings as well as for their brass figures and their ceramics. Ritual vessels in the form of a head and these with a large open mouth were found in the Ga'anda territory, too. Constructed from pale earthenware and standing on a circular flat foot, the bowl with steep walls. At the centre lies a beautiful abstract swirl of green, yellow and black. The imagery on bowls of this type is thought to have derived from metalwork of the Sasanian period(third to seventh century) in Iran. The excavators had been drawn to the city because of its fame in the medieval period, when it flourished as a regional capital. This lovely antique tile was salvaged from an old house in the ancient Jewish quarter of the famous Fez Medina.Fez is one of the oldest cities in the Atlas mountains of North Africa having been founded in the 9th century. The famous Medina dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries now a UNESCO world heritage site. This type of tile is iconic of the old doorway decorations from the Jewish quarter. skillfully shaped and incised by hand with the script and scrolling borders glazed in green. Condition is good for the age. With only one small corner chip and two small areas of glaze loss to the inscription and scroll(lower right) which can be clearly seen in the pictures. The three dimensional aspect is very noticeable and clean cut. This is a scene that appear to be depicted quite often on Persian tiles: a man on a horse with a bird hovering above. The flowers and leaves are bright and clear. The horse seems tame. Almost standing still. There appears to some color'wash' near the rider's foot and horse's tail. RARE ANTIQUE ALGERIAN ARAB ISLAMIC MAN & WOMAN SOUVENIR FIGURINES 1930's CERAMIC
Rare and wonderful vintage 1930's hand-painted ceramic figurines from Algeria of an Arab or Berber man and woman in traditional dress. The man is wearing a white burnous over an ornately colored blue. Red and yellow outfit, and the woman is dressed in a full white burka with pink puffy pants underneath. These two figurines are each inscribed"ALGER" on the front of the base, with"M-B" on the back. The Arab man and woman each stand approximately 5.5" tall on a 2" by 1.5" base, and weigh 1/2 lb. apiece. They are both made of glazed ceramic and hand-painted in vivid colors, with some yellowing on the white burka and burnous. These likely date from the 1930's or earlier and both are in very good condition with no cracks or chips. They're awesome. Win them with your bid.
