CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Glass Unguentarium. ATTRIBUTION: Antiochia. Eastern Provincial Roman Empire(Syria) 2nd Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 17 millimeters(2/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 24 millimeters(1 inch) Base Diameter: 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) Weight: 5.70 grams. CONDITION: Very good though bears evidence of a very neat. Professional repair. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more common

DESCRIPTION: HUGE hardcover in dustjacket w/magnificent color plates(199 pages) Metropolitan Museum of Art(1972) Composed in the tenth century by the poet Firdowsi. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. One commentator wrote then of Sultan Muhammad's page representing"The Court of Gayumars" the boldest painters hung their heads in shame before it" While that superb image. Reproduced within the book in color and gold, is called by Stuart Welch"perhaps the greatest painting in Iranian art: others of the pages he has selected for color reproduction and special comment are clearly in the same area of merit. Lost Civilizations by Bill Harris. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 112 pages. Publisher: BDD Illustrated Books; 1993) Since the dawn of time humankind ... morehas been fascinated with the endless mystery of life. The birth of civilization. Including the construction of the first buildings, the manufacture of early artifacts, and the many and carried applications of an evolving technological knowledge, happened in large part because of this fascination. In trying to explain their surroundings and attempting to rationalize the fantastic, human beings created a wealth of monuments that give the modern archaeologist clues as to what life has been like over the millennia. Lost Civilizations" probes the archaeological and anthropological evidence uncovered by researchers and paints a compelling portrait of the growth of civilization. The books starts with a discussion of the very real evidence that points to the existence of a vanished land called"Atlantis" The book then travels to the Near East. Where, as many researchers believe, humankind's first civilization developed, in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley in Mesopotamia. Also included in this chapter are descriptions of the communities in the outlaying regions, particularly ancient Egypt. Next the book focuses on the Mediterranean civilizations. From the Phoenicians; who have been thought responsible for ruins found as far away from their home as North America; to the Trojans and the Greeks. From there"Lost Civilizations" turns to the Far East in an examination of Asian civilizations, including those of China, which has survived as a unified state for more than 2,000 years. Also examined are the Indus River Valley civilizations(the site of modern-day India) as well as Persia, whose well-trained armies conquered an enormous empire. Africa is the next land of mystery to be explored; the civilizations of Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. Among others, are held up to the light of modern scrutiny, deepening suspicions that the continent might have seen not o
